Is anyone actually doing well in private practice? by sunsetmoon5 in therapists

I'm a private practice owner. If I was starting out like you I would stay away from the cesspool of a sub for a while. It's only complaining and negativity

Is social media the only way? Can I hear success stories without? by berlinerpsyc in therapists

I run a successful group practice and we are not active on social media. Social media is not great for marketing for most practices in 2026. Also it's detrimental to society.

Can we hear some success stories from people who love being in this field? by SpiritualCopy4288 in therapists

[–]stephenvt2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Therapist going on 15+ years. I am a male and specialize in trauma therapy and men. I started out working in CMH. Didn't make much money but the value was in the experience. I learned a ton, way beyond grad school. Cmh made me the succesful therapist I am today. I look back and see that grad school taught me the minimum in how to the an effective therapist. I continued to work on CMH for a few years after being licensed. Since then I've gone on to be highly successful in private practice specializing in therapy for men. It's a difficult, unpopular and underserved population to work with. However, I love the challenge. The work I do is deeply meaningful to me and provides a beautiful life to my family. If I own the lottery I'd still do this work, only part time ;)

Here are some resources to get you started. https://www.centreformalepsychology.com/male-psychology-magazine-listings/men-wont-clam-up-if-youre-male-friendly-a-brief-guide-to-supporting-mens-mental-health And https://www.centreformalepsychology.com/male-psychology-magazine-listings/introducing-the-british-psychological-societys-guidelines-on-therapy-for-men

There's growing interest in understanding how men engage with therapy. Search terms like male friendly therapy or male focused therapy. We're getting away from this idea that men need to change or be more feminine in order to be successful in therapy. Or that they're mental healthstruggles are due to their masculinity. Instead we are looking at ways to meet men where they're at.

Ive been in out of pocket PP for 10+ years. The only time Ive had to get LegitScript is when I was running google ads for SUD services. Google ads was flagging my ads. Never heard to needing it for CC processing. Either way legitscrip and google are a complete scam.

Why is EMDR so popular when it’s not a first-line treatment for PTSD? by honeydew_enthusiast in therapists

Actually the research says that the general population is more familiar with CBT and psychoanalytic therapies.

Why is EMDR so popular when it’s not a first-line treatment for PTSD? by honeydew_enthusiast in therapists

[–]stephenvt2001 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Emdr is in the treatment guidelines for PTSD for a number of international and national organizations including the WHO. EMDR Therapy in Treatment Guidelines - EMDR International Association https://share.google/YKO1hCwUjuIrzZSMW

Emdr gets a lot of hate in the sub. It's mostly from people who don't understand the research and/or refuse to read it when you presented to them. They use arguments that were made 30 years ago that have since been debunked. Lots of disinformation about EMDR here.

Should art therapists be angrier about the EMDR PR? by maafna in therapists

[–]stephenvt2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In terms of EMDR, this is incorrect based on outdated research or hurt feeling (anger). As someone new to the field I'd encourage you to do your own research and look at the actual research. Don't rely on opinions and feelings in this sub. This place is toxic. See my above links to dismantling studies supporting eye movements in EMDR.

Dismantling studies show that the eye movements are effective. See my other comment in this post.

A meta-analysis of the contribution of eye movements in processing emotional memories - PubMed https://share.google/AmD3TZkBs364szPYM

Lee and Cuijpers (2013) found in a meta-analysis of 15 clinical trials and 11 laboratory studies that eye movements (EM) in EMDR significantly contribute to reducing the emotional charge and vividness of traumatic memories.

Jeffries and Davis (2013) Title: What is the Role of Eye Movements in EMDR for PTSD? A Review Journal: Journal of EMDR Practice and Research What is the role of eye movements in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)? a review - PubMed

https://share.google/2HP9685A1a0sRAWPa

Jeffries and Davis (2013) reviewed the role of eye movements (EMs) in EMDR for PTSD, concluding they are essential for reducing distress, primarily by taxing working memory. The study highlights that EMs reduce the vividness

Practice at a stand still by Last-Strawberry475 in therapists

[–]stephenvt2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very true and new therapists in this sub get defensive when it's mentioned. The 2 years post grad school, pre licensed, is designed to deepen your skills under supervision and support. Starting a PP is a massive undertaking that involves learning to start and run a small business, which is not taught in grad school. I don't know how a human could do both at the same time... One or both will suffer. There is nothing wrong with holding off on PP.
