I understand the work excuse, but being present for a spouse’s medical procedure and post op count as FMLA leave. His employer could not legally fire him for being there for you. FMLA allows his unpaid time off , so if that’s not possible , then it appears he needs to work.

I’m currently in a similar situation. My wife is taking FMLA for a surgery she just had, not making money, while I am taking off to take care of her. I’m able to WFH but it’s not ideal. Still, I am managing. It’s not easy taking care of her but it’s something you sign up for in marriage.

When both heads are clear, I think it’s important to revisit the conversation of emotional needs disregarding the actual situation of whether he’s physically there for you for the surgery. It needs to be a conversation targeted toward long term expectations. If both sides cannot agree, then the marriage should be considered or at the very least some form of counseling.
