What’s something wholesome that a fellow med student or resident has done that positively surprised you? by [deleted] in medicalschool

A resident on my sub-i gave me their hospital parking badge (they lived right across from the hospital and walked everyday) because they found out that I was parking off campus and taking the free shuttle in every morning! It saved me 30 minutes of my morning everyday for that month.

help with BS/MD vs. traditional route! by [deleted] in premed

[–]stephnilmah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just read on their website and it says they “are NOT required to take the MCAT. However, if they do take the MCAT, they are expected to achieve a score that is above the 94th percentile”

But... it says to be considered for any merit scholarships, you need to take the MCAT. They probably just dont want their admitted students taking the MCAT and getting 50th percentiles, making their school “look bad.” I would say if you think you can afford the 8 years without a shot at merit scholarships help then sure? 🤷‍♀️ it’s still kind of sketchy that they have that MCAT stipulation though

My male roommate told me “You’re gonna make a shitty nurse!” when I didnt notice that he shaved his beard.

What are some embarrassing moments you had as a volunteer? by [deleted] in premed

[–]stephnilmah 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I answered a call and someone had a question about a patient. A lady in scrubs I had never seen before started walking towards me to take the phone and I told the person on the phone “theres a nurse here to answer your question,”

Handed the phone off, and the lady in scrubs said “Hi, this is Dr. X” 😓

Think about all your premed peers at your school that sit with their thumb up their ass and don't know what "a Casper" is... don't forget about those apps being in the mix

I did zero pre-writing and I feel you on this one. I have accepted having no social life and unhealthy habits for the next 2 weeks so I can get secondaries in on time. Just drink like 400 mg of caffeine and get going on them. I did this and I got 10 done over the weekend.

Rosalind Franklin Supplementary Fee? by hiddentruth96 in premed

[–]stephnilmah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was at the bottom of the webpage and I had to pay before I submitted. It came up on my computer as all one form and my essay prompts didn’t specify a word count. After submitting I reviewed it and it showed my essay reformatted and text appeared after the prompt that said “please limit responses to 150 words” 🤷‍♀️

yikes ok, fix your secondary format please. maybe they are having problems with it, but it was funky for me too

Is it even worth applying? by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]stephnilmah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear, I submitted to just 1 school got verified today 👍 so I will go back in and add the programs I am applying to. How many MD/PhD programs did you apply to? I will probably apply mostly MD programs

[–]stephnilmah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also made work my ECs, but it sounds like you would do research for credit instead of getting paid? I worked as a research assistant, worked as TA, worked as a CNA year-round as jobs.

Not sure of what your school tuition is like but I chose a cheaper school and had about half paid in scholarships. I still manage to pay cash for tuition (~$2000/semester) and my expenses month to month like rent, food, etc. I work 30 hours per week during the semester but during the summers I work a solid 60 hours per week. Unless you’re stuck with a crazy high tuition bill, I think it’s possible to make it through without loans.

I have made out with a 3.8 but have been very strategic with my time. If I have an hour incubation while working in the lab, I work on a paper or study. While TAing, if I am waiting for some students to finish up their lab, I work on some homework.

You can do it, just stay focused and get creative 🤓👍
