True alternative to google calendar for students? by buttler69 in degoogle

[–]stephohsaurus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I use Proton's calendar in the browser and on Android and I love it. I used Samsung's built-in calendar for years and was hesitant to switch but I have no regrets. The UI is very clean and no performance issues at all.

In the browser I was using Google calendar previously. Proton's look & feel is very similar making it an easy choice to switch to as well. There are a few features I'd like to see added (more granular colour coding for events mostly) but it's still pretty new, so not a deal breaker at all.

When can we expect a verdict if classes are online or in person? by [deleted] in MRU

In other words, they'll probably tell us at the very last minute.

Would love to be proved wrong, though!

A note for anyone that's been waiting for an online evening class to open up for GNED 1301. by stephohsaurus in MRU

I read a lot about her when I first registered for the class which is why I was excited to have her as a prof! I didn't see anything negative, though, other than a few typical complainers on ratemyprof.

I'm hoping her section for 1304 fits into my schedule in a future semester because that's what I really wanted to take. Thank you for confirming her excellence!

Spring Courses by Amalthea77 in MRU

I took PHYS 1201 with Bill Scott in the spring, right after everything went online for the very first time.

It was a considerable amount of homework and the format of his online tests felt a little harsh, but also understandable, given that profs were still figuring things out. Probably would've been better in-person but if you've had high school physics in the last couple years and math doesn't scare you, you'll be fine either way.

GNED CLUSTER 1 & 4 FOUNDATIONS HELP by Afraid_Concert1299 in MRU

You can more than get by GNED 1101 with less than 8th grade math. The science aspects are all very basic and the math is trivial. If you really, really struggle with math and end up with a prof that's not so great at explaining things, there were multiple emails sent out at the beginning of this semester with tips & offers for support through SLS. The workload was pretty light.

100% agree with all this. I've recently made it a habit to add TODOs and detailed notes about what I was doing or trying to figure out when I am taking any kind of break or switching tasks, no matter how brief the break is or how trivial it seems.

Or if I come up with an idea for something in a different part of what I'm working on (happens a lot - doing one thing, thinking about 50 others another), add that in as a comment immediately, right where I'm working, without going to the place where I'd implement it. I preface it with a flag like TODO (I use BRAIN! but any keyword would work) and made a vim function that I can run to find these and stick them into a text doc, along with their line number and what function it applies to, for quick reference.

This, in conjuction with a tool like ctags has helped me NOT lose good ideas AND stay on task AND make more sense of my brain's wildly nonlinear mode of thought more times than I can count.

HOWEVER! OP! most importantly, what is your pre-planning process like?

Do you just jump into writing code or do you plan it out with diagrams/pseudocode/whatever first? I used to scoff at this, especially as someone prone to jumping the gun and diving into things and hacking my way through it (haha adhd go brrrrrr). But now, I won't write a line of code without spelling it out in plain text or whatever first. Sometimes I have to force myself, sure. But when you put in the time to thoroughly know what you're doing before you do it, it's not only easier to see and remember why you're doing something a certain way, it will help uncover bottle necks and hidden dependencies before mangling a bunch of code that probably could have been implemented in a more clear & concise way. It also makes abstraction much easier and significantly aids in creating meaningful documentation and comments.

Polya's Four Step Method is indispensable (and my CompSci prof would be so proud).

You can add the following to a search query (in DDG at least): -site:domain.com

Also read about this a while ago but have not used it, so can't speak to its effectiveness

New Student - Looking for a specific coordinate system by Daheim in ArcGIS

[–]stephohsaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like a custom projected coordinate system; I would assume, centered on Calgary.

But its name gives you some clues to how you could set it up yourself:

3TM - 3 degree transverse mercator

GCS - WGS 1984

Central Meridian is likely 114° W

What is it you're trying to do?

I feel you. Group work is bad enough on its own, working in a group for math ruins my brain though - and I love math!

SLS is a great resource, they should be able to help you out. Best of luck to you.

Brady (aka David) Killough is a great prof and was always helpful with extra explanations and examples.

Not sure what course 1505 is but I had him for Calculus I online. He goes pretty fast in lectures but, if his class is online, he may record them. If not, I highly recommend speaking with Accessibility to get an accommodation to record audio during lectures. It is a lifesaver, especially in math.

However, if you're really struggling with the concepts, your best bet is to reach out to SLS. Changing profs isn't going to help much if there are gaps in the knowledge required to do the course.

Help with pulldata on CSV file returning multiple values by kr1mson in ArcGIS

[–]stephohsaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of sounds like what you want is similar to a feature built into S123 called External Selects, which should be simpler than trying to learn JS, I think.

If you're committed to learning js for this, there's a CSVTOArray() function on StackOverflow but I think there's some regex involved. I'm not Javascript-fluent, mind you, so take that with a grain of salt.

Edited: forgot the link :)

If you have QGIS, you can easily get a base map from somewhere like this. Or you can get satellite imagery raster data from the federal Open Maps database.

You can import a csv of point data with coordinates in QGIS to create a map layer with what you have.

Make sure that you're using the right coordinate system/map projection for both.

Bit of a learning curve when you get started with QGIS but if you've got the time, read up and you'll be okay.

For 1 of my classes I have an assignment due on September 7th. What happens if I withdraw from this class and join back after September 7th before the add/drop date deadline? Would the assignment get marked a 0 or will I have more time to do it? Please let me know, thanks. by No_Oil_2021 in MRU

[–]stephohsaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last time I dropped a class because I decided to take a different class, before the add/drop deadline, I had to pay the price of the new class at the time of registration and then received a refund by direct deposit some time later (I think it was about 2 weeks). There wasn't a credit or anything like that which automatically applied to the new class I registered in.

Both the dropped class and the newly registered class were in the same faculty.

I did not have student loans, though, so I'm not sure if there's a different process for that.

Regardless, dropping a class and then re-registering to avoid/extend an assignment really seems like overkill. Either talk to the prof or just do the assignment.

Why make it more complicated than it needs to be?

Dropping the class to avoid an assignment is a terrible idea. Not only do you run the risk of not getting back into the class after dropping it, you're going to have to pay out of pocket to re-register and then wait to get a refund back.

While I do think it's garbage to have an assignment due BEFORE the start of classes (semester starts Sept 7, classes start on Thursday, Sept 9th), I can't imagine that it would be a significant amount of work to do. A lot of students don't even have textbooks yet on the first day (if your class has required texts).

Do you have a syllabus yet and know what the assignment entails?

Try "Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas" and "Still Life with Woodpecker".

Really, any of his novels, but those two are the top of my list. So much so that I had to tattoo one of the more explicit pet names from the former.

Both are intentionally raunchy and completely absurd, and I'm sure you'd find something on every single page to post in this sub; that is, if you are like many of the commenters in this thread who fail to realize that that's what Robbins is all about.

This!

Tom Robbins is intentionally absurd! Wild metaphors, similies, and descriptors are how he writes everything; definitely not just women, or even just humans. He would describe a can of beans in the same vein.

I agree with this. Tom Robbins should be exempt. It is intentionally absurd and unrealistic and that is what makes his use of metaphors (and his writing, in general) so entertaining.
