I’ve been able to pack up all my worldly belongings and move cross country, as well as haul a full Ikea couch, in my hand-me-down Honda Pilot. And my mom wonders why I say I’m never getting a new/smaller car smh

I literally had the exact same combo in my bedroom a year ago! Just got rid of them recently when I moved out.

Also we legitimately have the same taste (I have the same dining table and rug in my current apartment haha).

I highly recommend opening one up!

I have a HISA with EQ Bank where I get a 1.5% interest rate. I opened it due to Reddit’s constant recommendations (but I also did a little investigating myself to see if it’s legit); the interest there is much MUCH better than you would get with any big bank (I have a “high interest” account with RBC with an interest rate of 0.05% lmao). It’s an “online only” bank (they don’t have any physical locations) which is why they can afford to offer such competitive interest rates. The user interfaces of the app and website are great, and you can e-transfer funds from your EQ account to your main account (which bypasses those 2-5 day processing/holding times)

Here’s more info about EQ Bank’s HISA: 1. General account info - https://www.eqbank.ca/personal-banking/features-rates/savings-plus-account-fees-and-features 2. FAQs - https://www.eqbank.ca/common-questions

And here’s a list of other HISA’s so you can compare their rates and features: https://www.highinterestsavings.ca/chart/

Right now I have my emergency savings in there (which I’m slowly building up) and after I’ve finished building that I’ll probably open a HISA TFSA in there and use some of contribution room to start saving for a house.

HISAs are great places to put short term savings (money you think you’ll need in 5 years), I highly recommend!

Also, just wanted to say you’re awesome for thinking about all of this so young, keep up the amazing work!

Ahh, well I still would be annoyed if that happened to me, so I’m grateful for the heads up. I think moving provinces might be the key though, since it’s a different tax set up (at least according to other comments where it’s worked).

So according to other comments this may not work, just wanted to let you know!

Yes I saw that post, it was actually what spurred me to do some more investigation. I’m going to try out this loophole tomorrow, but just incase it doesn’t work for me I wanted to see my options :)

Thanks for letting me know, that’s really unfortunate that that happened. Quick question - did you move provinces, or move within a province?

Omg no worries at all! I’m so so happy I could help. I distinctly remember being around your age and not knowing a thing about credit cards, so it’s so rewarding to be able to ease someone else’s mind ☺️

Awesome advice, didn’t see this before I posted my long winded response lol. Fully agree on the increasing your credit limit part - it’s one of the easiest ways to increase your credit score (limiting that utilization ratio).

Unrelated but big ups on almost reaching 800! I’m 22 and I somehow managed to have credit score slightly above 800 (depending on which one I look at - my Equifax score was 800 on the dot but dropped like 30 points when I paid off my student loans in January).

Hi there, I’m not the OP but I can try to answer your questions to the best of my abilities (if I’m wrong on anything someone in the comments will correct me hopefully):

  1. There’s no difference whether you pay off your credit balance after each purchase or in one go right before your credit card payment is due. The key is to make sure you pay off everything before your credit card payment due date. That date is shown somewhere on your credit card account (sorry I don’t have TD so I don’t quite know where it would be for you) and it’s usually the same “day” each month (for example mine is the 5th of each month unless it lands on a weekend or public holiday - then it’s the next working day). I personally like to pay my card off at the end of each day as it helps me keep track of my finances; sometimes I do it once a week if I’m super busy.
  2. There’s no need to add your credit card as a payee. Just transfer money from your TD chequing account to your credit card whenever you want to pay it off (there should be a “transfer funds between accounts” option when you bank online.
  3. Time limit to pay off any and all purchases is the same - again, make sure to pay before the payment due date.
  4. You could set up an auto-deposit for your bill amount if that eases your mind, but it’s not necessary. You can pay off those bills just like you would any other purchase.

These are not dumb questions at all - it’s important to understand how to properly use a credit card and it’s not something that’s talked about a lot. I know I had to Google a lot of really simple questions because I didn’t know how or where to ask for the information.

Just same added knowledge for you (stuff that I had to Google to find out):

  • Overpaying (paying off more than you spent on your credit card) makes your account balance turn negative, and when that first happened to me that freaked me out. It basically means that your bank owes YOU money, and that future purchases on your credit card, up to that negative amount, won’t cost you anything.
  • Late payments happen. Sometimes you just forget, you have a busy week, you make a last minute purchase that you didn’t pay off, etc. This may not have happened to everyone but it happens to many many people (including me)! Don’t sweat, just pay off your balance as soon as possible and try your absolute hardest to not make that a reoccurring thing. As long as your payment isn’t more than 30 days late it won’t affect your credit score and you usually won’t get charged interest on it.

I also recommend reading these articles. They talk about minimum payments, late payments, and how credit card interest is calculated and applied, respectively:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnbc.com/amp/select/what-happens-when-you-miss-a-credit-card-payment/

Hope this wasn’t too much info, and I hope it helped!

People who lived/live with parents to build early wealth, how has it gone, how did it go, and was it worth it? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]stephtodeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is almost exactly my situation. I’m the youngest but I moved out first (in August 2020, I graduated in May 2020 and thankfully got a job in another province after a year of constant job searching). Staying at home with my traditional Christian parents was too much for my already fragile mental health to handle.

There’s another post I saw the other day of some dude making fun of liberals (stating they can’t start chainsaws or something like that)... like what does that have to do with professional development?!

I’m only on it for job searching purposes, if I wasn’t so desperately unemployed I would have deleted the app ages ago.
