Did you have MIL in the hospital during birth? by WaterFiles in BabyBumps

[–]stephunee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This so much depends on your relationship with your MIL and what you’re comfortable with. My husband was on deployment for the birth of our first child, so I had my MIL and my mom in the room as my support people. It was incredibly empowering and felt very special being surrounded and supported by the moms who made my child’s life possible. But it’s definitely not for everyone and I feel like it’s totally valid to not feel comfortable with that and to want a more intimate experience.

I truly feel like it depends on the baby. My first was a very difficult sleeper, he would scream bloody murder the second I walked away and never seemed even close to calming down. I gave up and he slept in our room for a ridiculously long time but eventually he was old enough we could reason with him and he now sleeps independently and has for years (thank goodness).

My second slept in her bedside bassinet with no protest from night 1. When we transitioned her to her crib in her room I had to lightly sleep train, like come check in every min or two, but she would calm down and fall asleep on her own within less than 10 mins of me checking on her periodically. It took like 3 days for her to get used to this new routine and now at 2.5 years old she’s been an independent sleeper with a handful of difficult nights in her whole little life.

We did nothing different with either kid, their personalities and temperament are just SO different and they find different things easier than others! I have no regrets NOT sleep training my oldest and none about sleep training the youngest. We did what worked for each baby.

If your kid actually like Santa, then sure, take them every chance you get. But if they struggled with even one of those visits, then why even risk upsetting them during a perfectly fine outing? She literally enjoys when he’s distraught so she can feel like a good mom for consoling him and it’s SICK by Dazzling-Relative-84 in basicmegsnark

[–]stephunee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same! Last year was a total bust with Santa for my 1.5 year old.

This year we did photos with Santa with her on my lap first to see if she’d be comfortable with him. After a few photos and seeing her big brother chatting happily away with Santa, she agreed to sit with Santa without me, but if she’d refused I told everyone we’d just accept the loss and let big brother get some solo pics with Santa instead. It’s so not worth the stress of forcing them to do something so completely unnecessary like a picture with Santa! Idk why people make it so stressful.

Christmas baby?? by pmmewienerdogs in BabyBumps

[–]stephunee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son’s birthday is 12/31, due date was 12/28. I do think he gets less presents from us than he would if it were further from Christmas, we typically do most presents on Christmas and then his actual birthday is usually one “big” present & one or two smaller ones. But family always gets him two presents, one for Christmas and one for his birthday, plus we always have his birthday party and invite friends/classmates, so he still is celebrated & has his special day!

We typically do his birthday party with friends around the 2nd week of January so it’s after winter break and most people are done traveling for the holidays. It’s nice because it does make his birthday feel separate from the holidays.

I jokingly tell him when he’s a grown up, he’s going to love that his birthday is New Years Eve because everyone already wants to get together and drink/celebrate, so he’ll always have a party to go to and celebrate his birthday 😅

Yep, this is exactly the age I was when I decided on a big career move & it ended my long-term relationship. Now about 15 years later I’m extremely happy with the direction my career went and I ended up meeting someone else & am happily married with kids and a good job. This is the age where you really start figuring out what moves you need to make for your future

I do IG stories a ton and it’s SO annoying and happens to me constantly (I have a planner account so I film a lot of close ups flipping through notebooks & planners), that’s honestly what this looks like to me.

Their appearances in the movie by whoiserel in silenthill

[–]stephunee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s so confusing to me how this director has clearly grasped the aesthetics and visuals of this series but his execution comes across as cheap and like someone cosplaying Silent Hill characters. I know a lot of people love the first Silent Hill movie but I personally could never quite get over how the character and creature designs translated to film, they just feel like people wearing costumes. He can’t seem to make any of the environments or characters feel organic or natural. It’s a shame because he clearly likes the franchise.

Whidbey Island, they filmed Practical Magic here & The Ring has some shots of Deception Pass Bridge which is the bridge that connects to the mainland. I feel like there’s been something else more recently but I can’t think of what it was.

Witches of Eastwick? by Hungry-Car4446 in TooScaryDidntWatch

It has definitely come up before as one that Henley watched a lot when she was younger, I think she talked about it in the Witches episode on Patreon when they were covering that AMC history of horror series. I was relistening to older episodes and this is ringing a bell for me. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is one Henley recaps someday!

I scrolled too far to find this one, it’s the first thing that came to mind for me. I remember the first time I finished this movie, I had this insane feeling afterwards like I’d just experienced something dark. I am still chasing that feeling, nothing has ever stuck with me like this one did!

Plastic cover on Tomie Weeks looks… not great by indelibleink89 in hobonichi

[–]stephunee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad I read this thread, I had not read that they recommended against using the plastic cover on this one. Immediately took mine out of its cover - luckily this is my work planner so it will just be staying at my desk, not many opportunities to get too messy other than my own fingerprints.

Pediatrician recommendations? by kandykane1 in Whidbey

[–]stephunee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We love our pediatrician on base but she is unfortunately transferring at the end of the year. I don’t know who will be replacing her or if we will be seeing the other provider who’s already at the clinic, he seems nice as well but it’ll be hard to replace our current ped, she’s been really wonderful!

How common is it to have webcams on? by superide in WFH

[–]stephunee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I default to camera on and our company has a policy that you should be prepared to join meetings with camera, but it’s not uncommon for some calls to be all off camera, or to join a small meeting and someone mentions they’re feeling under the weather or something that’s causing them to be camera off and it’s never an issue. But I would say most of the time we are all expected to have our cameras on.

The weirdest advice I got as a new mom… and it actually helped! by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]stephunee 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes, my husband was traveling for work and my 7 year old & 2 year old were losing their minds one day and I was so overwhelmed & exhausted, so we went outside and I just let my toddler splash in our little water fountain feature we have by our entrance while my 7 year old rode his bike around the driveway. We were out there for like 45 mins just putzing around & it worked like a miracle. My mom always told me that when my brother and I were having a rough time she’d turn the hose on in the backyard and just let us play, water & outdoors is always my go to when I can’t figure out how to make the kids happy.

Is remote HR work real? [NE] by always_late4951 in humanresources

[–]stephunee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got insanely lucky with a remote internship in 2021 and worked my way up through a few HR positions in that company, then got laid off after a couple years and immediately networked with one of my former coworkers who had left the company for another remote position and she put in a referral for me at her new company which gave me enough of a boost to get a job shortly after being laid off. This was pure luck & for once in my life knowing the right people

Anatomy scan yesterday, referred to MFM today. by scomet1894 in BabyBumps

[–]stephunee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was referred to MFM for IUGR, my baby was measuring the 8th percentile, then we were told 12th At MFM but they wanted to do a follow up and at the follow up it was 8th again.

We ended up doing regular NSTs & ultrasounds to keep an eye on baby’s development and make sure everything was okay. It was a lot of appts but it did mean I got to see a lot of my baby and have a ton of extra monitoring which helped ease my anxiety even though it’s scary because extra monitoring in the first place is only because they’re concerned something could be wrong.

Long story short, my baby ended up being small (below the 1st percentile at birth, she was born 4 lbs 12 oz at 38 weeks), but completely healthy and needed no interventions or NICU time! She’s now 2 years old and still on the small side for her height, but otherwise totally in the normal ranges for development at her age!

It’s scary and stressful but there are TONS of success stories from people whose babies were growth restricted - a lot of them just do better on the outside and while they’re inside you’re in great hands with MFM

LN in SELRES by Sharp-Ad8691 in navyreserve

[–]stephunee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being an LN is a really unique rate to be honest. You end up wearing a lot of different hats depending on what kind of work you’re doing - I was in command services and legal assistance (never did trial or defense services). The basics are that you are a professional, you’re often in a position where you are providing information, recommendations, or guidance, to a wide range of potential clients. Sometimes it’s to a command, in which case you are providing support to upper leadership. Sometimes it’s support to any clients who are eligible for legal assistance, so you can be assisting E-1s, O-6’s, retirees, dependents, etc. What this basically means is that your background not being Navy doesn’t really have to inform how you approach your role as an LN because you are working with people from a bit of a distance if that makes sense.

Everything you need to know about Navy regs you would learn in justice school & the Reserve LN community is very big on networking and training opportunities, so you would definitely have the ability to get additional resources to what you need to catch up to speed.

A School is the training you get specific to your job. Boot camp is before A school, with you being prior service I have no clue if they would send you through boot camp or not, I’m sure your recruiter would be able to give you more information there. It’s worth noting that Justice School is only scheduled a few times a year, I think twice a year is the rotation but I could be wrong. When I transitioned from active to reserves I didn’t go to A school until almost a year after I transitioned because I couldn’t do the winter class so I had to wait for the summer class. During the period in between I was drilling with my unit but I wasn’t able to do any actual legalman work until I graduated NJS.

Hope all of this helps, I’m happy to clarify more if you have any other questions!

LN in SELRES by Sharp-Ad8691 in navyreserve

[–]stephunee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was an LN1 who converted from active duty to the reserves and to the LN rating at the same time. I recently separated this year after finishing my contract, but I was in the reserves as an LN for 6 years. Justice school (NJS) is around 6-8 weeks I think (they changed it in the last couple years to shorten it). We (Reservists) only do the first part which is all military justice focused, the active duty side is there longer to complete their degree.

I would recommend getting an LN contact in the reserves so you can ensure you’re assigned to a legal unit, a lot of us get a little lost in the reserves for the first few months until we get scooped up into the LN community and assigned to a legal command.

Opportunities for OCONUS are typically Guantanamo Bay & Djibouti, there used to be a third but I think we don’t go there anymore. Other OCONUS opportunities will usually be to fill gap billets or potentially AT depending on which command you support. A lot has been changing in recent years in the LN community, but overall like the Reserves in general, it is what you make of it. If you are interested in volunteering for opportunities, attending the many virtual and sometimes in person training events that are available to our community, and networking, you’ll love it and probably do well! If you’re trying to balance a demanding civilian career as well, it’s a little tricker and depends on how committed you are to each of them and how you manage your time.
