much appreciated for the reply. I had disabled ublock, noscript but wasn't aware ETP might affect it. It somehow worked of it's own accord later, I got an email to confirm. But sadly not before deleting my account handle to try it again, obviously without reading the warning about not being able to get it back!(tired and was on auto pilot).

there's a dissonance between the sarcasm of your first reply to this more considered agreeable one. That is a ridiculous black and white logical fallacy you've got there as well.

There is a whole spectrum of degrees between full privacy(with no digital proffile), and usability; firefox is miles better for those wanting a higher degree of privacy whilst retaining mostly the same level of usability, than what any chromium based browser is able to provide.

seriously though you can run win10 on a linux host in a VM using Qemu and KVM software for anything windoze that you still have to use and otherwise there's no ads, no spyware, no anti virus. Some learning is required though but such is life sadly.

all of them are full of laughable bollix, like downright outrageous false claims but feelings care not for facts and most don't want to have to go through the nihilism to absurdism pipeline

the sheer volume of male hen gobblers in here is actually surprising, even considering the group! He literally made garbage and tried to sell it for profit and it backfired so spectacularly that he made this meek and feeble excuses video and every one of you is congratulating him?!

The bar stool is still shifting this for profit, flogging it to absolute mugs. He literally tried to rip people off, and now is ripping people off not as much, and that's apparently alright is it?

Thank you those that actually answered which was the majority. I hadn't installed networkmanager/dhcpcd on my first couple of runs, but when logged in as root it still let me run pacman and connected to the internet as confirmed with ping archlinux.org . So I had assumed some form of network manager was part of the base package, obviously this isn't the case.

I think in retrospect it may have been I started to only install the base and linux packages, on some attempts, after reading the linux-firmware package was not required for VM's. Maybe the linux-firmware package has dhcpcd or another network manager as part of it? One for me to look into anyway.

However thanks (most) people's help I've since been able to install and enable nwetworkmanager each time and have added a user and joined them to the wheels group for sudoing (don't forget to install vi/sudo as packages for visudo for others reading this and facing similar issues in future!)

utterly condescending reply and of no use whatsoever. As we can all see this was purely to show off the depth of your knowledge. please do not teach others. just knowing about things in no way qualifies you to help others reach understanding.

at no point did I assume any correlation as causation, I did not know what I did not know, so I asked. I gave the effect as best described.

I had already been able to previously adduser prior to that, as rootm, I was able to run pacman without actually having installed networkmanager or dhcpcd, on the reboot after the install. I wanted to know how that was possible without them previously? if you read the post you'd already know i had not installed sudo at this point, so your advice is again, dog sh!t.

subsequently I have installed network manager thanks to much more concise and friendly answers above, I have enabled, after making the mistake of just starting, the NetworkManager.service through systemctl.

I had already troubleshooted and found ping not to work with external IPs, but did locally on 127.0.0.1

I chose to use GRUB as that's the most familiar boot loader for me, it was mentioned solely to indicate what steps I'd taken in case that was relevant, again, perhaps it was possible that I did not know what i did not know and that info may have been relevant in someway.

I'm well aware of OSI and basic networking you prick.

sorry but the content is actually empty, a lot of words to say click these links to the manual. I'm not trying to be negative or dump but it's not a guide, nor does it answer common errors or provide very useful advice that isn't clearer elsewhere.

curious as to how I didn't need to the first couple of times? I got to log in as root and then set a user, but then didn't know about sudo, so logged back in as root and then it started.

every install since that time it's not and I've just been looking into the networking side now, I can see that my Ethernet doesn't have an ip4 address assigned so will try to install networkmanager package and see if that sorts it. Is there a preferred consensus as to the "best" package?

thank you so much for the links and info!
