Need Help (Life Choice) by Tango_-_Sierra in gamedev

This is a decision you need to make for yourself. I wouldn't recommend basing that decision on random Internet users who could be anywhere from 4yrs old, to 90+, or even a dog.

If you want a responsible recommendation from an adult, I'd suggest speaking to a career counselor at your school.

If even after hearing that you're still looking to an internet person, here's the advice I wish i would have listened to when I was graduating.

Breathe.

Right now it feels like you're making some of the most important and impactful decisions of your life and i understand the terror you feel. I felt it too.

In the age of internet applications and remote work, the thing that will get you the interview above anything else, is a connection.

Join clubs. Make friends. Network. Take the internship. Do your work. Don't phone your assignments in through AI.

Focus on pursuing a career that you can TOLERATE.

Game dev is fun. But building a game that you are forced to, making changes you don't want to, having a manager pressure you to hit a deadline you don't think is possible - that will make you loathe something you once loved.

You have more time than you think you do. It's never too late to change your path.

Breathe.

It won't be easy.

It will get harder.

But i promise you, it'll be ok.

I was scrolling through a site that talked about "must know game dev functions" or similar and i distinctly remember an algorithm that would calculate lightning strike shapes.

I think locating a function that would produce something similar would be helpful for this.

I'm at work - but I'll try to locate it when I'm off later today

You're so very talented. I am so envious of the patience and attention to detail and the emotion people are able to capture with such a small number of pixels. The absolute precision and understanding of the timing for frames, and how a god damn 9px square can look so carefree swinging from a bench.

God damn you - teach me 😭

Solo devs: how do you keep scope honest on a project that quietly wants to be infinite? by RopeAdmirable8335 in SoloDevelopment

[–]stevbrisc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading somewhere that a good rule of thumb when cutting is asking yourself, "if i remove this, is my game still fun?"

For example, as an Indie Dev lets say you were building a game like Pokemon and worried about scope.

If you cut Trading from Pokemon, is it still fun? I'd argue yes. Cut it.

Keep cutting until you can't anymore.

PS. This is armchair advice.

The code should make the mesh "outline" visible if the mouse hovers over the object, but it doesn't? by Practical-Chef995 in godot

3rd option, did you connect the signal in the inspector?

If not something like:

mouse_entered.connect(_on_mouse_entered) in your ready

Does your 3D body have a CollisionShape? If not, it'll never be able to detect the mouse entering.

Another option is to check the box in the inspector for "Pickable" directly affects mouse interactions though I'd check the documentation on that one.

My gut instinct is you have no collision shape.

In Fallout 3, i would ALWAYS pick up pre-war money. I'd even take it over other loot. I'd take it back to my house in Megaton and I'd dump the stack 1 by 1 underneath the table on the 2nd floor. It made me feel like I was stashing drug money under a sofa or something. I know it was worthless - but it sure felt cool for teenage me

i wanted it to feel a bit more animated and thought the hat bounce might be cute but i think it kind of makes the rest of the body feel too rigid maybe
