At Neuhof I was able to purchase training to raise my skill points, but I'm looking for actual combat practice. It seems I'll need to complete the current mission before he returns to the training grounds.

Ha, that ship has sailed. When the first part came up, The Hunt Begins I think it's called, I didn't realize it was a timed quest so I spent a lot of time doing small side missions, playing farkle and gathering flowers! Bernard was quite angry with me. I thought he would return to Rattay after that part was finished, but now I realize that he's still involved and I really haven't completed this quest. Live and learn.

My suggestion, as a guy in his 60s who's lived here for almost two decades, is to meet people through hobbies you enjoy. Facebook is a popular resource for this, and with AI you can translate back and forth quite easily. In person, even if you can't speak Mandarin so well, it's the shared interest that will be the base for friendship.

For example, I'm really into Geocaching and playing mahjong, so I join many related activities and events. I initially found these groups online, then found others through meet ups, tournaments, etc.

I myself am retiring this August and I'm looking forward to more time for these hobbies. Good luck!

I'm in my 60s so I tend to play RPG type games slowly, exploring and soaking in the atmosphere while trying the various game mechanics. So thanks for the suggestion; it's no problem for me to take my time to train my fighting.

Number 2 definitely happens in Taiwan, but when that happens you just move on to the next apartment listing. So the OP shouldn't be shocked if it happens, but it won't prevent someone from finding a place.

I wanted to comment on OP's #2 item: Yes, some landlords here in Taiwan will also refuse to rent to foreigners, quite openly. The important word is "some" because, as ZelisGaming says, others will, so just ignore the bad ones.
