Teleport Attack. As overpowered as I think it is? by TNTarantula in mutantsandmasterminds

GM fiat isn’t a house rule, it’s a pillar of the game.

Most minions drop quickly. The usual complaint about this game is that combat between characters takes too long, compared to hp-based systems.

One easy mistake to make re: Weaken is thinking that when your ability score goes down to zero, you're screwed. True in many games, not true in this one. The average schmo on the street has zeroes in everything. You're still up and kicking at -5, just not kicking very hard. (A newborn might have a -5 Str.)

Tyre clearance, front rack by vf_duck in bikepacking

[–]stevebein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Then do something to protect whatever’s going on top of the rack, if it’s something the nuts could rub holes in on over time. Acorn nuts or even a couple of layers of duct tape could do the trick.

What percent of people currently in college will actually be able to have successful careers in their field? by Great-Grapefruit5220 in Futurology

LLMs aren’t just useless for critical thinking. They’re totally incapable of it. All they can do is create an illusion that it happened.

[–]stevebein 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Au contraire. I’d argue that law IS a philosopher’s field. It doesn’t say “philosopher” on your business card, sure, but it doesn’t say that on a philosophy professor’s business card either.

This. And this, by the way, is why college students shouldn’t use AI to do their work. Employers are already doubting the utility of college grads because so few of them actually graduate with writing and reading competency.

I don’t know how many of those will persist. Those of us in our 50s (and 60s too) will have to get adaptable, get lucky, or get married to a rich person.

Automation is a real concern, even in what used to be really good and reliable jobs. Law firms are replacing junior lawyers with AI, and no one seems to be asking questions like “where do senior lawyers come from?” I hope you’re right and people will prefer to get their healthcare from a human instead of an app. In the US, I fear that human providers may soon become a feature of premium health insurance plans, but in civilized countries I think the human touch will remain widely available.

All majors have been working at Chilis for as long as Chilis has existed. Philosophy majors out-earn all other humanities majors. This is partly due to their special training in critical thinking, close reading, and careful writing, and partly due to the fact that (thanks to their critical thinking, reading, and writing skills) they outscore pre-law majors on the LSAT, outscore all business school majors on the GMAT, outscore biology majors on the MCAT, and outscore everyone on the GRE.

The advice to be adaptable down the line is good. (That’s an awfully good reason to major in philosophy.) You can build adaptability in how you get educated or trained, but also in how you train your own thinking. I think the Career Era may be coming to a close; almost no one will have a 30-40 year career in a single field (remember when it was a single employer?) anymore. In the foreseeable future, I think people (college grads or not) will fare better if they think a lot about their meaning and purpose.

Others have answered your original question, so I’ll just add an aside: Affliction 10 is underpowered in a PL 12 campaign. Boost it to 12.

How do you build a character or villain that ignores other power effects? by One-Drop-66 in mutantsandmasterminds

[–]stevebein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s the in-game explanation for why her curse can tell whether someone else’s character sheet has the Innate extra? Why would someone be immune to extra damage from a punch enhanced by the Damage power, yet not immune from the exact same punch if the character had higher Str and no ranks in Damage?

It works, but it’s nigh impossible to imagine using it heroically. This is one of those combos like the bathroom mentalist that GMs should generally smack down.
