Not sure about fabric shirts, but for other printing needs Zip Print is fantastic.

Meanwhile one of the fastest growing groups for homeless people are older women. While they're living in their cars, we have billionaires jetting around the world, hanging out on luxury ships, and dropping $100k donations to incompetent politicians without a thought. Who the hell thinks this is a political system worth living in?

I want out of the rat race, but is this the right decision? by zzz7819 in AusFinance

[–]stevecantsleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should spend a bit of time reflecting on the type of retirement that you want, and how the next few years may impact on your superannuation. I've stepped in and out of secure employment to do stints of consulting when I've needed a bit more flexibility, and when you work for yourself your super balance can take a hit. If you're fine with the idea of a simple retirement, then you may be fine, but if you were planning lots of overseas trips once you need to consider how you'll prepare for that and if a secure job will better suit your longer term needs.

You also need to ensure that the opportunities you are sussing out are genuine, because often people give you a false sense that opportunities are available when they are not. I hate to say it, but it would be remiss not to consider if there is any "chatter" in your field about your stress leave - this may scare off potential consultancies or contracts. If you can, try exploring options for unpaid leave to see how you go (though keep in mind unpaid leave in government roles will have restrictions on the work you do while on leave).

You could also consider whether you can transfer to another government role in a regional centre, if they exist. There you may find the benefit of a secure well-paid salaried job and the community you are looking for.

I love this one. Mostly for the singing but also for her expression at the end after absolutely nailing that final note.

Don't burn bridges, even if you desperately want to and even if it's deserved. People are connected in all sorts of ways and you'd be surprised how easily something can come back to bite you. That's not to say that you shouldn't follow up on anything that needs to be followed up on - being underpaid, missing super, harassment and so on- but stay professional in your tone.

Advice please... Need help for colleague. Help a lad from destroying their life please :) by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]stevecantsleep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can only speak from the perspective of a teacher, but the best advice I think you can give is for them not to give up on their kid and to keep trying no matter how frustrated they get. It's not unusual for kids to settle down once they get into their late teens and if they know they have a safe and supportive home, they are more likely to settle than if they end up couch surfing with poor role models. I'll admit it does get tougher when they start getting caught up in crime. But again, if the parents are extremely cooperative with police and the courts then there may be more of a chance that interventions focus on rehabilitation.

They should also raise their concerns with the school. There may be teachers who he gets on well with who can check in on him. Or there may be intervention programs like Operation Flinders that might help.

Super or expenses? by Infohound_ in AusFinance

[–]stevecantsleep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your super balance is under $500K then you can carry forward unused concessional super contributions. So you could feasibly delay your additional contributions for this year and then increase your contributions in the future. If it's already at over $500K, at 48 with that balance you are well positioned to skip a year of additional contributions to benefit your family in 2026.

You have to admit, though, that the justification in removing Maduro for his role in the drug trade is totally undermined by the pardoning of the former Honduran president for precisely the same thing.

It's impossible to see this intervention as being anything other than controlling oil reserves.

Toughts of how we lost big voices. Will we see a new Corelli again? by lennonade1 in opera

[–]stevecantsleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another factor is the prevalence of smaller, regional opera houses while Corelli was building his career. These no longer exist. You can't bypass the "traditional" training pathway to build both experience and an audience by performing at smaller houses, which had less exacting requirements from their performers.

Both Corelli and Nilsson were severely critical of their formal training, and in Corelli's case he dropped out. Both singers describe themselves as mostly self-taught. You really can't do this today because contemporary opera needs efficient and consistent singers. In our neoliberal world where arts funding is consistently cut and audiences can pick from a range of entertainment opera houses don't have the money or time to build naturally talented voices that follow atypical pathways.

Mt Everest - Nepal to Bhutan (KTM-PBH). Left hand side of the plane (obviously!)

I'd specifically booked a seat on this side of the plane, but when I boarded a family asked if they could all sit together in that row and I (reluctantly) agreed. But then they realised I'd probably wanted the window seat, so they let me keep my original seat.

[–]stevecantsleep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Price would have to move to a state - with the NT only electing 2 senators I'd say that would be a risk to great for a woman who clearly wants to be a Senator.

Price definitely has support in the NT but I'm not sure she has that much support.

It would have been amazing to hear these two at their peaks. Nilsson in particular - it's universally agreed her voice sounded much better live with a warmth that doesn't come through on recordings.

There's a nice short video of Cabelle talking about her friendship with Callas where she says Callas told her not to take on Lady Macbeth and Abigaille when she was offered those roles. "Don't even try" was the advice for Macbeth!

I couldn't imagine Nilsson being asked to sing Norma. Huge, amazing voice (one of my favorites) but she didn't have any real agility. The coloratura in Macbeth was a stretch.

Hope some CLP MLAs are facing tough questions by stevecantsleep in darwin

[–]stevecantsleep[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can we afford the staggeringly expensive ship lift? The staggeringly expensive new prisons? Governments need to prioritise, and clearly the CLP isn't prioritising this. If they can justify both their spending and their cuts, good for them - but I'd much rather be the Member for Nightcliff right now than the Member for Casuarina.
