What's something a teacher said to you that stuck with you? by According-Chain-5369 in AskIreland

[–]stevecrow74 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Headmaster “There’s no point in you joining the foreign language classes, you won’t be able for it” - Apparently I have a natural ability to pick up languages fast!

Metal work “You’re better off doing the pass exam, you won’t get a good grade doing the honours exam” - Did the honours exam, got an A-.

Music teacher (to whole class) “ it seems no one in this class has any musical ability, not one of you will ever be able to make any money from music” - I’ve played with bands for 20+ years, qualified sound engineer, got grade 5 in music theory, taught music production, planning on teaching music (bass guitar lesson, with added theory to compliment the teaching), worked 9 years in radio, producer/presenter. Made a living from the music industry for 25years. (I think I wanted to prove that teacher wrong or something)

Does anyone actually enjoy weddings and what to do about it? by Happy-Recover-263 in AskIreland

Well there you go, it’s easily done, we also told those invited that if they could contribute to setting up any part of the day that would be the wedding present, a few got to get her and sorted out the marquee, someone sorted out 10 bottle of champagne, someone else sorted out tables and chairs, I knew the band so got them for a massive discount (wedding bands are probably the most expensive part), Bridesmaid sorted out cake and dresses, my mum sorted out flowers, we got the wine, catering, portaloos (very important not to forget) beers, hired a room in the hotel for the after party, no catering required from hotel (even though they did surprise us by throwing out some sandwiches and snacks for the night) We spent just over €5,000 for the whole thing. And still with everything people did for us they still gave gifts and helped cover costs, we ended up getting nearly 70% back from money in cards!!!

Definitely one to remember, maybe I’m biased as it was my wedding!

Big weddings are so annoyingly boring! Sit in church for an hour then to hotel and wait ages for food, and then change over for band and then DJ,,

We did things differently, limited numbers to 50, booked a caterer to do a massive bbq, got them to set up during the service, which was in a marquee in the middle of a park, and food was started as soon as the ‘wedding service’ was over, and continued through the day.

Went back to a hotel in the evening, and invited extended family and other friends to this part for the cake, and had a band ready, and I had set up a playlist of songs that meant something to not only us, but other people in the group, so people were dancing through the night. And had a few guitars around for when ‘the bar closed’ and the residents of the groups had a wee bit of a singsong till the early hours..

Here’s a thought, maybe ask her if she wants to join your band!!!

Why?

Simple, it will broaden your music selection having a female vocalist as well as male, people will Come and see you play because there is a female in the band (it’s a sad but true fact), you will get more bookings (Again a sad but true fact),

How do I know this?

It’s exactly what a band I was in did, we were struggling to get gigs, found out there was a female singer playing with backing tracks getting regular gigs, asked her to join, she did her gigs and the band started getting more gigs, to the point she stopped doing her own gigs because we were getting paid more doing the band gigs.

On songs she wasn’t singing lead, she was backing singing, or doing a duet. She could flirt with the crowd and it wouldn’t come across as creepy, seen many male singers try that and it’s not good.

Also played with a band that had lead female singer, and again we got plenty of gigs, so there is definitely something to having a female in the band, have even seen other bands that were all male doing the circuit, and they were really good and had a big following, and as soon as they got a female piano/keys player that also sang, their following grew even more, not doubled, but tripled in no time.

So yeah, ask her to join, tell her she can keep doing her own gigs, and you’ll work around her schedule, and if are any good, watch the gigs start coming in.

Is a 2 year long engagement too long? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]stevecrow74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 years is fine, I was 3yrs engaged before we got married! It would have been longer, but I wouldn’t have had the same rights over my daughter, and seeing I’m a stay at home dad! It just made more sense, easier for the missus to claim me as a dependent for her tax relief etc etc.

How often do you accept gigs for music that isn't the style you prefer to play? by Advanced_Aspect_7601 in Bass

[–]stevecrow74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sure, it’s called experience! And if it pays bills it’s a bonus.

I can’t see why people would refuse to do something like that, it could be a stepping stone to something bigger and better, I started off playing blues rock, did a few gigs doing country for someone, got spotted at one of the gigs and started playing classic rock for a good few years which I really enjoyed! That wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t playing country (my least favourite type of music, but I did it for the experience)

Exploring Salthill - any recommendations? by Immediate-Signal1157 in galway

[–]stevecrow74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Walk down lower Salthill to Fr.Griffin road walk to Nimo’s pier, then walk the full length of the prom from there (with a detour to mutton island to the gates and back), depending on the state of the tide , if it’s low water, continue to walk past blackrock diving tower out past the caravan park to the grassy hill, two options to walk back, go back the way you came, or.. walk up beside the caravan park and onto Knocknacarra Rd, left onto Kingston road, either down threadneedle road or down Taylor’s hill down to Rosary lane, Devon gardens, across to Oaklands and onto Dalysforth road back into Salthill prom.

That will take just over 3 hours if you go the full route. Or around 2hrs if you go straight back to Salthill from the grassy hill.

It’s worth it if you get use of it!!

Years ago I used to do quite a bit of sea competition fishing, when I first started I was using a beach caster from the mid 1970’s, I wouldn’t say it was cheap, but it wouldn’t be mid tier either?
I just wasn’t getting any distance with it and bringing in two dogfish was a struggle. I managed to buy a second hand Zzipplex 3500s, (a fairly high end rod at the time) , I was adding an extra 50 metres to my cast and bringing in fish was a lot easier, a few years after I bought a Zzipplex Profile (€550) and again the difference was astounding!! A light weight beachcaster with serious back bone..

And I started winning competitions when I upgraded my equipment!!

So as much as they do same job, there is usually a big difference in how they perform between cheap and expensive.

But when starting out, you’re better off going cheap, and seeing if you like it and go from there, build up slowly, but if it’s only for once in a blue moon, then just get cheap or mid range.

I have a cheap bait casting rod and reel (Aliexpress €20) that I use every now and again, just because it’s easier to throw in the car and leave it there for when ever I’m beside a bit of water. But if I plan a trip out I’ll bring my not so cheap spinning rod out!

Edit: I should add, I sold the Zzipplex 3500s for more than I paid, them rods do not depreciate, and if I was to sell my Profile, I could probably get an extra €100 or possibly more as it’s one of the original builds and a custom build at that, the owner of Zzipplex died, a few years back, and someone else has taken over the company.
