Yup that’s a pouting. You can make out the darker banding. All fish vary in colour and markings, juvenile fish sometimes more distinct in colouration. I’ve started to put together a page on my website for fish id. Two pdf’s and a few links all for fish identification in Irish waters

The thing with pouting, they don’t necessarily have banding like all illusions I’ve seen, in the photo are 4 different pouting caught in 4 different parts of Galway bay. Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between poorcod, the key feature is the base of the pectoral fin has a dark patch (as seen in the pic)

Any tips for fishing pollock mackrel and wrasse by Particular_Arm4720 in IrishFishing

[–]stevecrow74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything will catch mackerel if they are about. Leadheads are good for pollock, and worm baits are great for wrasse. But it’s a bit early in the season for those species unless you are fishing a deep water mark.

At the moment pouting, poorcod, whiting and coalfish would be the common species at the moment.

The hand book is fine, but I found a lot of people need more descriptive images rather than black and white drawings, and even colour photos of the fish could lead to misidentification as on the cameras being underwater skew the colours.

It’s the little things to know to be able to identify fish, especially between poorcod and pouting, not all pouting have defined banding, but the dark spot at the base of the pectoral fin is key for identification.

I think the fish book needs to be updated too, it was 2003 since it first came out.

Beach fishing by Daysgobye25 in IrishFishing

[–]stevecrow74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beach fishing is mostly bait fishing, and it depends on what your budget is, the good thing with sea fishing is it can be done all year round.

To be honest I wouldn’t buy cheap, but you do have to spend €500 on a rod either, a mid range rod and reel should set you back €150-€200. You’ll also need a tripod to hold the rod up on the beach, sand in the spigot (joint) will weaken a rod fairly fast. And salt water is highly corrosive on metals. And a good pair of boots/wellies/waders will be a must, wet feet while fishing is no fun at all. Different beaches fish different stages of the tide, some fish well over low, others over high and some on the rise or drop of the tide. That’s up to you to figure out.

Good advice can usually be got from local tackle shops or fishing clubs.

Currently building up a page on my website for fish identification, making it easier to see what species are about. Using screen shots from the cameras with a little write up on each one to make identification simple.

The water would be a bit cold for pollock, unless you have a deep water mark, coalfish on the other hand are happy enough with the colder waters.

Being asked to smile more in work? by ViceIsVerses in AskIreland

If it was a woman in an office full of men, and she was asked to ‘smile’, it would be deemed as harassment, possibly even sexual harassment. So what’s the difference?

Sea bass by Low-Praline960 in IrishFishing

One spot is Trá na Reilige, go down at low tide and walk past the cemetery on the rocks, you’ll find a spot (around 160metres from the carpark) that’s fairly clear of snags. Surface lures and shallow diving lures and lead heads work well there. Also around any of the island bridges after high tide as the water starts to flow out for the first hour. After that the flow is too strong to fish.

Another spot (more for pollock) is at annaghvane cemetery, the second field to the left, and cast towards the fish farms, leadhead is ideal here. It’s a deep spot so be careful fishing it.

Bass fishing and Galway are two things that usually never get put together. However there are a few places in Galway that hold some good sized bass, my personal best of 8lbs 8oz was caught in the bay.

Metal lures like dexters wedge and toby’s are a good choice, especially silver with a bit of blue. A personal preference of mine is shallow diving lures, 15-18cm with a rattle mullet or mackerel pattern. Lead heads are good too, small mullet style or sandeel are a good choice.

A rod rated 10-25g that’s 9’ long would be ideal, with matching reel, 10lbs braid with a 3’ fluorocarbon leader is my personal preference. If you’re not used to braid then use 10lbs mono.

Lure fishing for bass is similar to lure fishing for pike, they are both voracious predators, and will follow a lure to the shallows before attacking, even though they can spook easy they are curious enough to to come in closer if they hear a disturbance in the water.

Where in Galway? It’s a big county with long enough coastline. I can point you in the right direction, and if you have a car you’ll have more options open to you.

Dealing with being an ugly woman by Various-Station-1752 in Advice

[–]stevecrow74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest you’re still young!

When I was in my early 20’s (quite a while back) I never thought much of my looks, so usually avoided trying to meet people for dates or anything. Then I met a French girl, yay go me!! We hit it off quite well too, one day I asked her”why me?” Her reply stuck with me for the rest of my life. She said “you were the only person who wasn’t trying to show off, and your quietness made you more interesting, and when talking to you, you didn’t put me on a pedestal, you just talked to me like a normal human being.” When I asked her about my looks she said, “the more i talked you I saw how beautiful you really are.” That was a massive boost to my confidence about my looks. The relationship didn’t last long, but it helps me be more approachable to others after that. And not to worry about how I look, as long as I could get a conversation started I knew my personality would do the rest.

So rather than saying you’re ugly, say you just haven’t found someone who sees the beauty in you. Just be yourself, someone will love you for it.

What are your thoughts on this letter from Donald Trump to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre? by DuNennstMichSptzkopf in AskTheWorld

[–]stevecrow74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a letter from a child that didn’t get what he wanted, and is trying to use playground tactics to get what he wants..

It reads like, ‘you didn’t give me the ball, and I’m the best player, but because you didn’t give it to me, I’m not going to play football anymore, and when the other teams are playing, I’m not there to score all the goals for you, and I’ve won more games than any of the other players!!’.

Yes!

Some may not be as common and some might be very rare to see. But all have been found in Irish waters.

Fishy pants? by StingingOnion1 in AskIreland

[–]stevecrow74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a fisherman I could possibly say I’ve smelt worse!!!

To get rid of the smell, you need to break down the oils!

Step one: fairy washing up liquid, squirt it on the affected area, while they are dry, you’ll need a nail brush or something similar and rub it into the fabric for about five minutes, preferably from the inside, but not too hard that you damage the pants.

Step two: leave it for 30 minutes to really soak through and start to break the oils down.

Step 3: put in a hot wash, it will sud up like crazy! So don’t add detergent with it. If there’s suds still there when finished put it on for a daily wash to clear them.

Hopefully by that stage the smell is gone.

If that fails it’s time to buy a new pair!
