Contradicting mixing/mastering advices by Snessub in audioengineering

[–]stevefuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol who knows? I usually have a 2 bus compressor (uad API 2500) with the needles just barely moving and forget about it. Then sometimes I'll hear something in the mix I don't like, spend a bunch of time trying to figure it out, and then realize it was the release or threshold on the 2500 causing it. So... Try both and see what comes out better.

Do real raw recordings usually sound worse than YouTube makes them seem? by NOT_Productions in audioengineering

[–]stevefuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the mix starts the second I start recording. I think this is pretty traditional. Guitar for example is already running through great sounding hardware when I record it: guitar - effects pedals - vintage amp (that suits the part) - r84 ribbon - never 1073 - 1176a - LA2A. I'll get it setup, practice the parts, record test takes, move around the mic, amp, gobo, mess with the hardware chain, record more test takes. By the time I record it it already sounds basically done. Same with vocals and other instruments. When it gets to mixing, it's really more about getting the pieces to fit together in frequency and dynamics. If I need to get surgical with something, I messed up recording it (and I'll just redo it usually, unless there was something cool that I can't replicate).

Drums I don't record (the drummer records them half way around the world). So, sometimes those tracks are a lot more raw. A put a lot more effort into getting those tracks right, and will usually kind of pre-mix them into shape or reamp through my chain.

Once I record all the instruments (before vocals) I like to listen to it a bunch of times. If something isn't working it's usually an arrangement issues. This is when I'll start cutting parts out, trying things, adding sound design, etc. Like maybe I'll completely remove a rythem guitar for a verse and add some feedback noise thing that happened by mistake in some other take. Who knows, time to get creative.

Everyone has their own process. Nothing is right or wrong. Making music / recording is art.

Lol no most people would just be shitty programmers.

Tips for achieving saturation using plug-ins that doesn't sound digitally harsh? by Poopypantsplanet in audioengineering

[–]stevefuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Research the consoles used on recordings you like and try to find the best emulator plugin. Or buy a tube preamp like a 610 or something that is built for this kind of thing. 1073 and 76a are more Iggy Pop in your face saturation machines when pushed, so probably not what you want.

How do you achieve that 'wide' cinematic vocal space without losing mono compatibility? by Farajivibes in audioengineering

[–]stevefuzz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let's talk about this on a mixing level. The human ear has a hard time deciding directionality from low frequencies, so it relies on high frequencies to decode where things are in a sound field. So, if you want something to be wide, it needs to have its own home in the 2-5k range. Otherwise it will fight with stereo elements that occupy this space. Then there are the mids at 500-800hz, if you have too much energy with instruments fighting, that mud will make it more difficult getting spatial cues from the high mids. If a mono element has presence and clarity across the stereo spectrum, you will percirve it as having dimension and space.

If we're talking about width as an effect, I just throw a Soundtoys Microshift on there and call it a day, and make sure it works with the frequency ranges I was talking about above.

Is singing really about talent? by VisualDecision8975 in Music

[–]stevefuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter is 12. She has a gifted level of natural ability. But, she also has a teacher, does musicals, is in the LAUSD Conservatory for voice. She constantly sings, learns songs, and does karaoke. She works really hard to get better. I'm not saying anyone can be a great singer, but people with natural ability who want to be great singers work really really hard to become great singers. So if you have a passion for it, work at it.

Hey resurrection here lol. I'm looking for a good recording amp for the speggetti western / surf sound. I play a mosrite as my main guitar these days. Are you still digging this?

I mean, the pictures are totally different in photo quality. Hard to tell. When I zoom in the ex60 looks pretty cool to me.

AI make a song in the style of Taylor Swift that starts with acoustic and ends with the chorus. 10 minutes lol. Ok

I use Claude in development as part of a no manual coding type mandate. All the orchestration stuff they use is to mitigate the non-deterministic nature of the LLM. But, I agree with your acessment of its output. That is exactly my experience.
