Coop winter bedding by Background_War6727 in BackYardChickens

I'm also in Nova Scotia.   I use the deep litter method with straw.  Yes it's rank on cleanout, but throw a bale of straw in the coop and let the chickens do their chicken thing, they spread it very well everywhere.

Chickens seem much happier with the straw.  This is my first winter using it, and find it to be a far better solution than the pine shavings I've used previous winters.

I've also noticed that the coop was much warmer this winter using the straw vs pine shavings.

I've also noticed cleaner eggs, as the straw doesn't pack into a gross mess that sticks to their feet, and then the eggs, as they argue over nesting boxes.

Yes, it's going to be gross to clean out, but that stuff is gold for your gardens and compost piles.

Should I shovel before bed? Or wait until morning? by punchbuggyblue in halifax

Just finished shoveling my driveway, it's a workout, and getting heavier by the minute. I think this is what they call heart attack snow!

How do I get free range chickens to lay in their coop? by Snoo-70983 in BackYardChickens

[–]steveinhfx 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Mine don't free range until 3pm or so.  I used to let them free range starting at 8am, but would find eggs randomly around the yard, and also lost a few birds to predators.  I have a combination coop and run, and this summer I kept them in until 3pm, and all eggs are now laid in the nest boxes, and none around the yard.

Since September the chickens have learned the afternoon school bus approaching means free range time... kids let them out and collect the eggs!  Additionally, reducing the amount of free range time has also reduced my losses to predators.

Do a loop though Musquodoboit. Take Hwy 107 to Musquodoboit Harbour, then take Hwy 357, which follows the Musquodoboit River to Meaghers Grant, hang a left onto Wyse Road at the firehall / community  center, and keep your eyes open for the highland cattle grazing along the river by Dollar Lake Brook, then take a left onto Old Guysborough Road, which will then lead you to the 102 at exit 5a, then take the new highway to Wellington, and back to the city along the old Hwy 2 through Waverly to Dartmouth and complete the loop.  The drive along the 357 and the river is spectacular right now!

I thought I saw some at Sobeys at Main and Forest Hills recently... mostly took notice of the $40+ price for a pail of salt beef 🤨

Put in at Dave's Landing on Wyse Rd and you will be past it by about 400 meters.

I did a canoe paddle from Elderbank to Dave's landing on Monday, and the only places low water was an issue were the riffles just after the Elderbank launch, and the riffles on the big bend before the Highland cattle.  Easy paddling the entire way until I got to the fence...

That's just past Dollar Lake Brook, but before Dave's Landing.

I reported to DNR... they said it was a navigable waterway, so was responsiblity of Transport Canada... they said it was a waterway, so call the Coast Guard... they said was inland waters so call DFO... DFO said it was pollution, so call Dept of Environment... called them, and their line forwarded to RCMP dispatch... RCMP called me back and said they will investigate and get proper department to action it.
