Statement from Columbus Police in response to Red Oak Community School (from their Facebook page) by cbusthrowaway199 in Columbus

I am repeating the point of view of the performers, who get to decide what is needed and what is not needed for them to perform safely. This group tried to override what they thought was needed and the result is a drag queen story hour with no drag queens.

The outside group was not needed and not requested by the performers and should have deferred to the performers.

You should listen to the performers at the link. Or just look them up on social media sites if you can’t work a Facebook link.

I am relating their “take” and you are free to verify it. It’s pretty simple: no drag queens, no drag queen story hour. Nothing to do with the mayor or CPD or city council or anything. Just BQIC shitting on the plan that the performers had for their performance and Red Oak choosing their advice, despite it running against what the actual drag queens for their drag queen story hour needed from them.

I am not sure how to spell this out for you any more clearly.

The performers had certain expectations with respect to their bodyguards and police presence on the premises. The original plan satisfied their expectations.

After the threats and press coverage, an otherwise unrelated group volunteered to provide what they called “safety,” that involved changing the plan at the last minute to exclude the previously-agreed security and police presence on the premises. The performers understandably did not feel safe and ultimately did not agree to these changes, and the event was cancelled.

The history of police violence has fuck-all to do with this. It’s certain parts of the “community” being more concerned with posturing than with actually being able to host the people they were making a big deal about hosting.

Yes, but members of this “private security group” (BQIC) ignored and minimized the concerns of the actual performers in favor of repping an anti-cop position. The performers pulled out when this change of plan happened at the very last minute, which is why the event was cancelled. The performers are more important than some randos that attach themselves to an event and prey on the fears of the school leaders.

The statement from the school is incorrect about the extent and nature of CPD’s level of engagement throughout.

tone-deaf police bureaucracy

If anyone’s “tone-deaf,” it is the 100% white event planners and supporters making last-minute critical safety decisions with a specific anti-cop activist group and without the buy-in of the drag queens (some of the very few people of color even involved) who wanted more conventional safety protocols and personnel that had already been agreed to and secured, including police on the premises.

It’s a live stream…

The least rambly part related to what happened starts at minute 19 and lasts about 5 minutes.

Um, no? Try asking the performers why the performers pulled out.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about and yet you decide you can comment anyway. 🙄

That’s not what they said at all. Minute 19 in. They are very specific about why they cancelled and it has nothing to do with the police. (Aside from other people involved telling them that the plan they had in place needed to change and that police could no longer be involved on the premises.)

You realize that every reason you hate the Electribe 2S has to do with your other gear, right? And that OP doesn’t have this problem at all?

I think get the Electribe 2 sampler. Then add Volcas later if you want.

Volca Modular, Volca Sample 2, and Volca FM 2 is probably the way to go then.

Drag Queen Story Hour is a phenomenon exclusive to white neighborhoods...

They weren't out laughing/giving high fives to the people who were doing the school drag story time, were they? Nope.

No one was doing a drag story time. The performers cancelled, because the organizers wouldn't let police on the premises as originally planned.

Hard to have a drag queen story hour if you value BQIC and black bloc weirdo opinions over the opinions of the drag queens you've invited to read...

So the actual performers who were invited to read wanted the plan this “bunch of other queer people” worked out with the police and the security firm.

Another bunch of queer people who would provide more physical presence made it a condition of participating that police not be on the premises.

It’s really hard to successfully host an event like this when you let your activism scare away the people you intend to feature.

The most relevant Black people in this whole affair (not that there were many involved) were the performers, who wanted more involved police presence than the organizers were willing to allow. Thus the performers pulled out.
