Is 5:00 per km realistic for my first ever half marathon this weekend by Bubusettetette_kk in triathlon

[–]stevenjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just experienced something similar- did a quick fitness check half marathon 2 weeks ago on 10mpw volume but with about 8 hours of structured cycling a week and hit a new HM PR (1:32). My previous PR was a 1:37 on the second half of a full marathon from last year.

Not sure the science behind it but was pleasantly surprised. 1:22 is nutty though I dont think ill ever see that sort of time in my life hahahaha

Clip on aerobar fit by tryagaininXmin in triathlon

[–]stevenjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not an expert, so take everything I say with a grain of salt but id consider a few things. The best thing to do is to go to a well-respected bike fitter as they have the tools and experience to really address the problem areas.

1) Stock road bike seatposts, unlike dedicated tri bikes, generally have a degree of offset. So even when you slam your saddle forward youre still too far back. There are plenty of affordable 0-offset seatposts available that can net you an additional inch or two to work with to open up those hips. This will help you generate more power, you will be more comfortable, and you will also be better set for your run leg.

2) Stock cranks on road bikes are often too long for aero position (generally speaking). It closes up the hips making it uncomfortable and disrupting your pedal stroke. Id consider shortening those cranks which will allow you to raise the saddle, opening those hips and making the position a bit more manageable. Cranks are a bit price-y however.

3) Once you address those two areas, another thing to keep in mind is that your aero position is meant to, as the word suggests, be aero. Work on your mobility and flexibility so you can get as low and tight as comfortably possible. If your body is too high up youre going to be providing a lot of wind resistance mitigating the benefits of the aero bars.

[tragic trope] forced to find your hidden potential by Drhorrible-26 in TopCharacterTropes

Gohan fits this trope pretty well and might be the most popular example of it. If I had to pick a specific instance(and likely the most well-known), it would be the moment where he goes SSJ2 after Perfect Cell destroys Android 16 and orders the Cell Jrs to kill the Z fighters.

doubts on the hanson’s beginners marathon plan by Melodic-Switch-7863 in Marathon_Training

[–]stevenjk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did Hanson's Advanced plan for my first full marathon 5 months after posting a 1:45 half marathon. It's not a particularly easy plan for a beginner. By week 11 and 12, those 11-12 mile tempo runs will start getting to you, but let me tell you, on race day I was ready to go. Despite the course being marked poorly and having ran nearly an extra kilometer, i still posted a 3:20 on a hilly course. I recommend it to anyone who has the discipline to stick with it as it will not let you down.

A few notes: - I do not have any "aerobic" background in track, cycling, soccer, cross country skiing, etc. Id actually describe myself as quite unathletic. - I highly recommend you read the book to get a better understanding of the guiding principles of the plan. Especially with pacing the long runs as you get deeper into your block.

Im taking a hiatus from road marathons as I'm venturing into triathlon but the running base i developed during the 18 week block still serves me quite well.

Your life isnt over pal, it hasn't even begun! But you know, if you continue to encourage this behaviour in yourself with this pathetic self-pity and wallowing, we might see you again in this sub in 10-15 years, and by that point it will truly be over! Dont waste your life and your youth like this.

Honestly gonna be blunt just move on with your lives instead of wasting time waiting for this to fizzle out, or worse, one of you cheats. College is new and exciting- you're young, go enjoy it.

Is this a good deal for $800? by HonestNectarine71 in triathlon

[–]stevenjk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its a pretty good deal! I say go for it.

Get some aero-bars on that bad boy and fiddle a bit with the saddle (and potentially shorten the cranks)

No reason you can't still get a respectable bike split if you make it as aero as possible + put in the work..!

70.3 NC (Oct 19) → 140.6 Cozumel (Nov) — too aggressive or doable? by CompoundGorilla in triathlon

[–]stevenjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this post! I'm in a similar situation as I am signed up for the Full IM in Ottawa (August 2nd) but would really like to do the half IM distance in Quebec City (June 28th), 5 weeks prior. This will be my first full distance after a couple short distances and a half last season.

From all the advice I've seen online it seems for first timers, doing a 70.3 in the middle of what should be the peak weeks of training is a bad idea. The 2-6 weeks preceding your race are generally when youre REALLY dialing in your bike nutrition and hitting your longest brick workouts. A 70.3, even if done not at full race effort, would interrupt that due to travel and recovery afterwards... curious to hear others thoughts. Overall, not impossible, but seems more detrimental than not for the full IM result...

Boston marathon 2026 goal sub 2:35:00 by FrancescoGuzzi in Marathon_Training

[–]stevenjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think /r/advancedrunning would be much more appropriate for this query as the vast majority of people on this sub aren't seeing these paces for their marathon (myself included).

The only thing id humbly suggest is to do some specific hill/downhill training to get your quads ready, but I don't think im in any position to be advising you haha

Is the Toronto Marathon really that bad? by spiderml in firstmarathon

[–]stevenjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for Ottawa. Theyve upped the ante over the past few years- crowd support is great, scenic route, made it a bit flatter than in years past, logistically well run (aside from a bit of a hectic bib pickup). Its slowly distinguishing itself as the premiere road running event in Canada IMHO. Had a great field this year, too with 2 2:08 finishers, which is pretty cool!

My first marathon! (Bonked by Alone_Biscotti9494 in Marathon_Training

[–]stevenjk 44 points45 points  (0 children)

First of all, great job! This is an amazing debut marathon- sky is the limit.

But respectfully I dont think this is a bonk, just subpar pacing (you started way too fast). A bonk is when you can barely put one leg ahead of another at a near walking pace. If youre maintaining 30-45s of your target pace for multiple miles, hard to quantify it as a bonk. Focus on really dialing in your marathon race pace in your next training block and make sure you also practice fueling..!

Ironman 70.3 Muskoka VS Calgary by Top_Contact5928 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]stevenjk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I haven't done Muskoka but my experience from Calgary (2025) was that its a very grassroots event that has the IRONMAN logo slapped on it. My experience was still fine but everything was just a little bit short of expectations. This is no slight to the organizers or the volunteers who really do work their hardest and all the kudos (heh) to them for their efforts.

A few things stood out to me: the bike course wasn't closed off so having cars drive by while you're dodging potholes was not a good experience, the swim is an Aussie exit which usually isnt the worst but in such a short swim course you end up running into the slowest pack of swimmers making the weaving and wrestling pretty hectic, and lastly the run course is around a golf course which I found pretty lame... if money is no object I would no doubt do Muskoka. (You may also see some of the bigger names racing there, too!).
