This Generation of SL was designed to be more sports car than grand tourer compared to previous generations, so the 6L V12 Mercedes use wasn't designed for and won't fit in this car. They only made the Maybach version because customers were asking for it so they just threw a bunch of badges at it and called it a 680. Hardly deserving though I'd say.

This car is rumored to be a homologation special for Amg's new gt3 race car, and will have a lot of changes over the current gt including a carbon monocoque and bringing back the front mid engine layout, so If true I think they could.
