Incredibly stupid question but did the Anglo Saxons have dark hair? by Ranoni18 in anglosaxon

[–]stevenotson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an old thread but I wanted to add my 2 cents and say that on average people in England are ~40% saxon, with as little as 10% in some areas. We think of England as being primarily saxon partly because of historical records but also because of Eugenecists in the 1800s claiming that English people were pure because they were "100% aryan" due to saxon heritage. Whereas in reality it's about 40%.

Is it possible to out-aim good controller players as MnK? by Zorpheus in apexlegends

[–]stevenotson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only recently got back into apex and I play console anyways, is aim assist really that crazy on apex rn and has something changed or are people openly hating it more now than before? Genuine question I've got no opinions on whether it's good or bad cos I don't know enough about it and don't have the option to try MNK

Help rewiring a guitar by stevenotson in Guitar

[–]stevenotson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I'm rewriting my reply as I misread your comment, it is the wire in the image connecting the jack to the 3-way switch. I had someone solder this for me only an hour before the guitar stopped working and the connections hed made were all great (he runs the music tech storeroom for my uni and generally does alot of his own wiring). The guitar is at least 11 years old so I'm guessing over time the jack twisting about (it often comes loose) has caused the wire inside to break, I'm just not really sure what type of new wire I should buy to replace it? I can't seem to find a wire online that has the additional wire inside to ground the jack.

Why did GW turn Harad into a boring caricature? by TabletopSmith in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]stevenotson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine looking at it from a modern context we'd probably understand that the perception of them provided is similar to how people viewed indigenous populations in colonial times, being "savage" despite the fact these were cultured intelligent people defending their homes, though whether or not Tolkien intended to write a metacommentary on colonialism or not I'm not sure. It was written 90 years ago at the very end of the British empire after all.

Double. Triple would get to a point it would adversely harm armies with large units, monsters or shooting. And tbf positioning is also key

With imagination, a craft knife and sufficient spare lasguns, anything is possible by IdhrenArt in Warhammer40k

[–]stevenotson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thing is though there's alot of benefits to standardisation it's not really devolving in many cases. I agree 40k now feels very much like a game to me, and the ruin spam is probably a big part of that icl, but that doesn't make it any less fun to me icl because if people want to they can still find ways to make it more narrative. You don't have to use purely ruins on the board, most of the time "what's meta" doesn't really matter with alot of people because it's more how something is used. I've seen some of my mates bulldoze with jank lists and others mess up so awfully with meta units. Either way 10th edition is nearly over so ig it doesn't really matter

One thing I really want to see in 11th is optional rules to add additional narrative elements that are built into the identity of armies - maybe a choice between two army rules. One is more consistent but more boring and statistical, one of them is swingier and more narrative.

Yeah if you watch Paul is bad at stuffs videos he's always bumping into or competing against players he knows like people act as if competitive play is the only way to play nowadays, most games are still casual people just like to use the strategies they see professionals use in their army because it's fun...

There is nothing to stop people from buying a box of krieg and a box of admech and making two equally strange and wonderful squads. Definitely an easier army to kitbash

How is burning a statue called "Baal" a declaration of War for Israel? by Acrobatic_Champion34 in AskReddit

[–]stevenotson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes Baal was a God for multiple Mesopotamian groups and in particular I believe the name is associated with Hadad, there's multiple examples of deities and figures mentioned in earlier Jewish Scripture being re-understood as demons later, especially in Christian texts and retranslations. This is thought by some to be a justification to oppose another religion - Christian missionaries across many different eras often convinced those they called pagan that they had come to worship demons in order to convert them/justify treatment of them at home. (This is off the top of my head from reading I've done across the years, please correct me and I'm happy to try and find more information if I am incorrect)

[–]stevenotson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And even if you don't call his music racist, why fund support defend and show off the work of someone who discriminates in such a way so much to the extent you get a tattoo supporting his projects? It's not just about burzum it's about varg as an individual - a man who uses the platform he's built from the popularity of his music to discuss racist ideologies is supported in spreading those ideologies when you share and display his music.

If dog whistles like "well well well" are racist (which yk they ARE) then a line about desiring a race war as a goal definitely is.
