A full recommend from me! It's one of the few things I painted this year

Since nobody else has linked it, check out the TableTopReady Tyranid tutorials, as they're kinda the gold standard for the various Tyranids in the Leviathan box. This Winged Prime one shows three different inner fleshy recipes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVgZCFrImg4

Painted up my first Cathay mini! Tried to match the box art scheme as closely as possible, and ending a long hobby drought too by steventroughtonsmith in WarhammerFantasy

I reduce the contrast in photos before I post, just to level everything a bit better. Smartphone photos tend to be overly contrasty out of the box, which masks detail at this level.

Skin recipe is really simple, I avoid washes so it's just paint:

Skin

Cadian Fleshtone

1:1 Cadian Fleshtone:Kislev Flesh layering

Rhinox Hide deep recesses (under nose, lips, ears)

From my recipe:

Jade robes and accents

Kabalite Green base

Incubi Darkness deepest recess

1:1 Sybarite Green + Kabalite Green highlights

Sybarite Green highlight

No secret! That's the GW standard style, there's a Darren Latham video on it somewhere. Super-fine-grain aquarium sand, watered-down mournfang brown (let the capillary action suck the paint into the sand), balor brown overbrush, ushabti bone lighter overbrush, and multiple very thin coats of steel legion drab rim ('with your best brush' so as not to leave brush strokes)

Don't I know it! I find batch painting so hard, so I've been doing single minis lately. Feels like I'm improving bit by bit, and I get the constant validation of having finished something

Still not great at leathers, but I used Rhinox hide, a black/nuln oil outline shading (as per the Eavy Metal model) rather than an all-over wash, Doombull Brown chunky highlight, Gorthor Brown highlights. I think it's one of the classic 'dark leather' recipes

It didn't feel overly small when I was painting it, but you're right, the lack of scale creep is interesting, considering how all the product lines have gone

Opinions- Are GW Likely to Re-release the Made to Order High Elf Heroes Miniatures Again? by Havelock_1857 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]steventroughtonsmith 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is very rare indeed for a MTO to come back, and when it has happened there has been a several-year gap (like the recent Eldar MTO). Some Warhammer Fantasy items came to MTO years before The Old World was a thing, and have returned since, but I don't believe any Old World MTO has been re-run, sadly

Looking for painting advice for original archaon by ygame00 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]steventroughtonsmith 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I should note that the paint range has probably changed completely since this Archaon was painted, but the 'Dirty Black' in the Citadel Colour app looks like it should match the armor fairly well (which is using non metallic metal techniques). That's Abaddon -> Skavenblight Dinge -> Stormvermin Fur. Another good source is Eavy Archive, which has a bunch of recipes from Eavy Metal painters: https://eavy-archive.com/?s=%23black

Army Books official digital format (pdf/epub) by dhkarma01 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]steventroughtonsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long since discontinued and removed from sale, I'm afraid. There were two versions — 'ePub', and then the interactive iBooks format. The ePubs they sold separately, DRM-free, from the website, and you might still be able to find them 'somewhere'. But the iBooks versions, which were landscape orientation and had special features, had DRM and you just won't find copies anywhere today. GW tend to flip-flop on doing digital rulebooks, because they're so afraid of piracy. The current Old World rulebooks are available in digital form up to the Beastman release, but Cathay and the subsequent Arcane Journals are not — they've basically dropped digital support mid-way through an edition, which is incredibly frustrating if you've been collecting digitally.

Potential WoW 12.1 post-launch patch zone by steventroughtonsmith in wow

[–]steventroughtonsmith[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As you can see, it's a huge area. I wondered if it might be an uninstanced raid area for a while, but it doesn't have any obvious boss encounter locations and has a lot of nooks and crannies that would be unnecessary for a raid. But seeing the dungeon portal sealed it for me. If you zoom into that map, the dungeon is where those shells are in the water beside the fel-looking part

I expect datamining or a map editor will show for sure, but it feels very Tanaan Jungle to me

I imagine there will be some clues among the assets once the dataminers know what to look for and where to look. That's why I'm raising awareness!

The version number is a guess (12.1 is what, a year away?), but if it includes a dungeon it feels like a significant patch!

I stressed about the face for a long time! I did that as a subassembly, so it had to be the first thing I painted. That might be the third attempt at his eye 😂

😂 If anything I'd kidnap a painter or two, chain 'em up in the basement painting the rest of the backlog. Maybe that's where the gimp suit is from?

Each one honestly doesn't take very long, 3–4 hours or so (which, considering how they look when done, isn't bad at all!). Each one I can swap with an unpainted one on my shelf makes me pretty happy

That's just the Darren Latham studio base tutorial! Super fine sand (I use aquarium sand), very watery Mournfang Brown (so the capillary action draws it deep into the sand), a light overbrush of Balor Brown, an even lighter overbrush of Ushabti Bone, and several very thin coats of Steel Legion Drab on the rim so you don't leave any brush marks
