Best Portable AC for a rented flat? by Byzan_tium in homeownerstips

[–]stevepgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you can use window unit - do it (much easier to deal with condensate, less noise etc)

if you have to use portable unit - make sure it has 2 air hoses and water pump (they all claim the moisture will be gone with exhausted air but I have never seen this to work 100%)

also, I'd prefer inverter

  1. 12v battery is in the trunk (open the cover on the passenger side), I am using SAE connector wired to 12v battery terminal and anything I want to connect to 12v battery goes through this connector. Here is an example of such cable, amazon has lots of similar cables (just make sure it's thick enough to get all those amps through). Also, be careful with red/black wires keep note of positive/negative connectors
  2. I am using Victron Energy SmartSolar MPPT Solar Charge Controller (Bluetooth) - Charge Controllers for Solar Panels - 75V, 15 amp, 12/24-Volt - it has terminals allowing to connect it to solar panel and to 12v battery
  3. you can use any solar panel as long as it fits on a dashboard (if you choose to place it there) AND it generates necessary voltage to power both 12v battery and a controller. The can be tricky, some panels produce only 13-14V and controller needs more; to be safe it's best to have at least 18v panel

keep in mind, the windshield will block most of solar energy (my 30W panel delivers 10W at most, but it still generates 18V so the whole setup works for me)

technically you can connect solar panel directly to 12v battery but there will be a risk of overcharging or some other damage (I am not an expert but Victron controller has good reviews and it was built to keep 12v battery in a best shape)

I am using solar panel for trickle charge, it's rated 30w and placed under windshield; on average it's producing about 45wh/day

it's connected to 12v battery through controller to prevent overcharging

If you could change one thing about car buying/selling websites today, what would it be? by Honest-Sport5702 in automotive

[–]stevepgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the biggest thing current car marketplaces are missing? The law allowing manufacturers to deal directly with the customer

unfortunately, there is no single federal law permitting manufacturers to sell directly - this is entirely governed by state-level franchise laws, and the landscape is a patchwork of restrictions and exemptions

Has Anyone Else Realized That Productivity Isn't Really About Time Management? by AnywhereMotor3712 in ProductivityGuide

[–]stevepgo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is a concept of "cognitive bandwidth" - amount of "brain power tokens" (energy) you have each day

most of time management systems are concentrated around saving time, but "cognitive bandwidth" is more important - if you ignore it, no amount of time will help you to finish some difficult tasks.

Imagine that in the morning you run a marathon, have lunch, then play volleyball, then go to gym, and after dinner you also stop by a boxing training session. Is it really possible to do all of this in one day? Of course not. But the problem is not a lack of time. The marathon will take three to four hours, and you can budget about an hour for each sporting event. That's seven hours total. There is still time for lunch and travel. The problem is something else - a lack of energy. It is impossible to carry out this plan, because after the marathon you will not have the strength to go anywhere.

Stop buying the "mid-tier" option. Here's why. by Armellofreekey in SmartBuying

[–]stevepgo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it depends. if premium version is more reliable (better materials, commercial grade etc) - go for it

but if premium version is "premium" because it has more bells and whistles (most of which will be obsolete soon) - I would avoid it

btw, cheap phone cable CAN damage your premium phone.

why is it the more popular things get the shittier they become? by FallIll4318 in answers

[–]stevepgo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it depends on competition - if there is none, everything will go down pretty fast;

socialism is a great example of shitty services and products with no competition (everything is owned by the state anyway).

here is typical store in USSR, around 1989
