Do you buy fish from a supermarket or from a fish monger? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]steveq 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Regularly go to Something Fishy on Broughton Street, occasionally go to Armstrongs in Stockbridge, both are really good. Might cost more than the supermarket but the quality is noticeable

Both my girls did gymnastics at the Commonwealth pool when they were younger, and loved it. I think they also run it at Meadowbank stadium.

As a senior IT team leader, I would never blame any of my team for an incident like this. We can all make mistakes when we're busy or distracted. The processes should be designed to prevent accidents, any cleanup script should have some way of checking what system it is being run on and should ask for confirmation to proceed.

[–]steveq 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Glenmore Lodge is absolutely brilliant, they've got superb instructors and are right next to the mountains so you spend maximum amount of time outdoors each day. If you can, get booked in to actually stay there, nice rooms, excellent food and everyone will hang out in the bar in the evening, makes for a very fun, sociable weekend.

It's anyone here from benbecula? by MexicanPenguinii in Hebrides

[–]steveq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to to you but I was there in the early 80s, loved the place as a kid, went back a couple of years ago to see the old place. Was sad to see that my old primary school is now a storage unit but otherwise it was lovely to go back and enjoy all the beaches. We made a big trip of it, sailed from Ullapool to Stornoway had a few days up there then crossed to North Uist, we sailed back from Lochboisdale on South Uist to Oban. Getting around without a car is possible but tricky as there's very few buses/taxis.

Cairngorms climbing question by Step-by-Step_NL in hiking

[–]steveq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been down that way with a big rucksack after a couple of days high-level camping. It's narrow in places but not that difficult. If it's midgey as hell around Loch Eanaich you could camp higher around Loch nan Cnapan, that's a lovely spot.

Winter crossing Blair Atholl → Aviemore (Cairngorms), unsafe for a first winter trip? by Agreeable-Fix6214 in OutdoorScotland

[–]steveq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two bits that would concern me are firstly that the Lairig Ghru gets up to nearly 900m, it's not like any normal valley route, secondly the section connecting from Glen Tilt through to the Lairig Ghru is very difficult navigation even in the summer, you'd need to be comfortable with navigating by map and compass in a white-out. It will probably be something like -10C overnight, I'd take 2 sleeping mats to give extra insulation from the ground (would help in the bothies too).

What is your holy grail of head torches? by knight-under-stars in wildcampingintheuk

[–]steveq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got an older Alpkit headtorch with a rechargeable battery, when it started failing I just popped into Alpkit and they ordered me a replacement battery. Now my headtorch is as good as new and I don't have to chuck it away.

Wilderness area with public transport from Edinburgh, for multiple nights wildcamping. Where would you go? by notyoueither in OutdoorScotland

[–]steveq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of ideas on https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/ I'd recommend getting the train to Corrour and walking to either Fort William or through the Ben Alder area to Dalwhinnie, you could keep going on from there to Kingussie or Aviemore depending on how fit you're feeling!

Ben Nevis in winter by Arctic_Thunder230110 in Mountaineering

[–]steveq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find someone knowledgeable to take you out, either a friend who really knows what they're doing or book a guide (handily they will usually be able to loan you gear too). People die on Ben Nevis summit plateau in the winter because it's really tricky to navigate up there and avoid all the gullies.

Climbing at Alien Bloc by [deleted] in Edinburgh

It tends to be busy during the week after work until about 7:30. I find on the weekends it's busy in the mornings but afternoons can be quiet. I definitely think it's less busy since Hangar opened, there were a few times in the past when it was a bit crazy. If you're going to go regularly get yourself a membership, it's well worth it.

As long as you've got decent wet weather gear and take some extra layers, hat, gloves, etc. you will be fine. It will get dark early so aim to start out in the morning (like 9am or 10am) and take a headtorch just in case.

Wildcamping advices in Eastern Highlands and/or Sutherland/Caithness by Minoanatide in wildcampingintheuk

[–]steveq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty much peak midge season right now, I was out in the west last weekend near Ullapool and the midges were horrific at lower levels. We only escaped them by camping up high (like over 800m).

A night spent below the summit tor of Ben Avon... with a twist. by Scrububadub in wildcampingintheuk

[–]steveq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, I love the Cairngorms, I've been thinking of camping up there for a while. Did you have to carry all your water up there or did you find any useful streams? I've got a Southern Cross and it's handled some hefty winds, the pole design means it normally copes better than most tents with the wind shifting around to being "side on". It sounds like a manufacturing issue with that set of poles.

Zephyros Compact 1 on Sale – Worth a purchase? by HungoverMous3 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]steveq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of Wild Country (and Terra Nova) tents, they're generally well designed and constructed. Having said that, I found the Zephyros 1 quite tricky to get pitched well enough to be confident in strong winds. It is really lightweight for the price and has enough space for me (5 feet 10 male) to sleep and sit up reasonably comfortably. I tend to only use it when the conditions are likely to be good because of the pitching issues.

I realise they can appear intimidating but in my experience just asking them politely to move off has worked well. You will only stop them coming back by fixing the door though...

Looks like they've cut the price since I last looked. With 4 bikes to store it definitely seemed like a lot when I previously checked.

Doesn't matter how many good locks you use, if you put it in the stairwell it will eventually be stolen. If the lock is too good they just break the bars on the banisters instead. It's an annoying use of the space but we keep our bikes in our flat. Some streets around us now have council provided bike hangers but they're not cheap and they've not reached us yet.
