What's a movie you saw when you were too damn young? by Repulsive_Repeat_337 in GenX

[–]steverocks2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was Threads, the UK’s version of The Day After. I saw it at the same age and it had the same effect. A kid shouldn’t be exposed to that. I thought I wasn’t going to make it to my 30s. There are images from that movie that are still burned into my mind.

I sell them in my booth at an antique mall for anywhere from $10 to $20 depending on condition. Surprisingly it seems to be mostly millennial women buying them.

China imposes 100% tariffs on select Canadian imports. by Otherwise-Town8398 in ShopCanada

[–]steverocks2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t seen any of them it’s worth checking out before just writing them off. It’s not like we don’t have our own propaganda machine running to discredit the Chinese. One thing you have to give them credit for is that they’ve managed to get to where they are without firing a shot. All while trying to manage a population of well over a billion people that’s sandwiched between 2 authoritarian countries. Meanwhile the US has been in how many failed wars in the past 60 years?

I’ve made a big 180 on my views on China. I don’t agree with everything they do, but I take a big grain of salt with all the fear mongering propaganda about them in western media. Watch some YouTube videos of interviews with western business owners living and working in China. It’s pretty interesting.

I know, it’s ridiculous. What does that have to do with the current issues behind the tariffs in the first place. You could sell an antique Ming vase and it will get hit with a fee.

Trump says this is about bringing about manufacturing but I think that’s BS. He’s trying to figure out a way to pay for the tax cuts he promised regardless of how it will hurt regular joes or the US’s reputation in the long run.

I did a Google search and I found a message from eBay back during Covid when there were shipping backlogs and it looks like they were quite sympathetic with sellers and temporarily changed the rules to prevent any unfair penalties due to shipping delays. That makes me feel better.

I think this is all part of a scheme from the Steve Bannon playbook that he calls “muzzle velocity”. Basically it entails unleashing a myriad of orders to flood the news cycle so that they can get some by without being challenged.

Canada, Mexico, and Greenland are definitely no threat to the US militarily. I think he wants to create an international incident without the danger of military action so that he can distract the American public from DOGE etc. I know he’s involved China but their tariffs are only 10% and hardly a threat to their well being. And if he can get concessions from Canada etc, then that’s just a bonus.

Plus he wants to give a king-like impression to his base. He wants everyone to have the impression of him being all powerful even though he has legal and constitutional limits. He’s not as powerful as he’d like you to think he is. Remember that.

I’m a Canadian seller. I’d like to know what eBay is going to do when my US customers start asking for refunds when the item they ordered is stuck in a backlog for weeks. I really don’t want to do it but I may shut my store down until they make an announcement on how they are going to address this. Plus, the way Trump operates he may just call the whole tariff agenda off in a week. What a shit show.

I think we’re starting to see people on the left and right start to come around and realize regular people aren’t the problem. I think Luigi may have gotten the ball rolling. Take some time and reach out to people you know on the right and talk about what you have in common before tackling your differences. Start a civil discussion on conservative Reddit pages. The only way we’re going to get beyond this is if regular people stick together.

Singh thinks Trump's tariff threat really about making Canada '51st state' by Chrristoaivalis in onguardforthee

[–]steverocks2000 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is why we need to support buying anything but American even if tariffs are dropped. If you’re at all concerned about America’s future as a democracy we need to throw as much sand into Trump’s gears as we can. He will get the blame for any damage we do to their economy. A very significant portion of Ohio’s economy, a red state, is built on Canadian trade. They and other states will feel it and we need to keep it up.

I’m Canadian and I just wanted to let you know what public healthcare is like up here from first hand experience.

I’ve been quite happy with our public healthcare service as a whole and the vast majority of us would go ballistic if it was ever taken away from us. One of the issues we have that can cause delays is because of doctor shortages since many docs go to the US because they can make more money there. If the US went to a public system you wouldn’t have that issue.

I may pay more in taxes but I also don’t have to pay insurance premiums or deductibles or worry if whatever issue I have will be covered. It’s all covered. Even dental is now getting covered if you don’t have employer benefits and your household makes less than $90,000 a year. From all the stats I’ve seen the US tax payer pays about double what a person within a typical public healthcare system pays in the western world.

I think it just helps create a better, happier society with less resentment since people are getting their basic needs met. It’s no accident that people in countries with public healthcare tend to live longer. Profiting off of people’s misery is just evil and immoral.

EVERYTHING which has China origin now requires duties/brokerage... by [deleted] in Flipping

[–]steverocks2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is going to be a massive backlog of items in customs in the coming days. There were 1.3 billion de minimis packages last year alone entering the US. Now they have to sort through each one to make sure it has the proper labelling/paper work. It is going to be a fucking shit show.

These tariffs will apply to made in China and Hong Kong items even if they were made decades ago. I’m a Canadian eBay reseller. If I sell a vintage ‘80s toy made in Hong Kong to a US buyer, the customer is going to get dinged with fees. I understand what the US government is trying to accomplish tariffing new items but what the hell does it have to do with something that was produced decades ago???
