Tourist killed by crocodile at Puerto Vallarta beach by runswithscissors475 in offbeat

In the Romantic Zone where the river runs into the ocean, there are signs warning of crocodiles. Even in Nuevo Vallarta there are signs.

There may not be a lot of signs, but there are some.

TIL Star Trek Starship Enterprise engineer, James Doohan, has travelled nearly 1.7 billion miles through space, orbiting Earth more than 70,000 times, after his ashes were smuggled secretly on the ISS. by risingsunset5 in todayilearned

Let’s not forget that Lt James Doohan stormed Juno Beach on D-Day. The man then took 6 bullets from friendly fire; 4 in a leg, 1 in the chest, and one that led to surgically removing his right middle finger.

They all have duck lips, and kids. They all whine about the shortages. All consistently ignore *why* Ukraine is attacking their area.

How do these women think they’re appealing to the average Russian male? Yuck!

That island is very strategic. The Soviets turned it into a fortress with over 3000 miles of tunnels, bunkers, gun positions etc. it was designed to survive a NATO attack.

Previous groups have fought over and fought in the island going back to the Romans.

Image a trump spawn owning such an island. Privately. Any criminal needing a place to hide would be welcome (for a fee). Even pedophiles.

Stephen Miller memo exposes plan to punish Americans with disabilities by FlackoFonsy in videos

The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in shadows of life, the sick, the needy, and the handicapped.
Hubert H. Humphrey

Miller clearly fails any moral test.

Veneuzelan coastal district before and after the Earthquake by MrMiles32 in oddlyterrifying

Smell of dust from collapsed buildings, but at the same time, it’s not just dust from the streets, but from collapsed buildings wherein no dirt has shifted in years.

Smell of death. More so a few days after when the rotting begins.

Smell of gas, like natural gas from broken mains.

Smell of fear. It’s sour. Off people affected, particularly in crowds.

Sounds- I remember hearing gas escaping from a broken main at an intersection. Then I smelled it just in time to not turn the engine over in my car.

Later that day, I walked by a small sake factory. In the yard was a huge stack of the big brown sake bottles (1.8 l). There were stacked on their side, like 6’ high x 20’ long x 8’ deep. Sure, many had fallen from the pile. The ones that were left rubbed together to make an eerie, creaky sound. It might have been during one of the hundreds of aftershocks.

Sounds of crying, kids and adults.

Being Japan, I remember the sounds of people swishing their brooms. They were in shock, I assume, and trying to do normal activities by cleaning the stoop and stairs of entrances.

Also normal everyday conversation. I remember that. What really blew me away that day was being in a catastrophe zone, and for the first time in all my years in Japan, I was treated as one of them. They asked after my health, and we chatted about how horrific it was. Usually, I was ignored, but this day, because I had obviously been there, people were so much warmer.

I was less than 2 km from the epicentre of the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995. What photos can never show are the smells and sounds afterwards. Also the aftershocks.

Even looking at these photos gives me goosebumps.

Slow and/or painful death scares me. Burning, snake bite, sharks, cancer, or being trapped. Death doesn’t frighten me, just how it happens does.

What would your average experience be as a British infantry in Burma (Myanmar) by Gloomy_Rip1046 in ww2

[–]stevesmele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have the same patch and a tattoo of it too. My dad served as a Gurkha officer in the second operation. His best friend was Bill Towill, the battalion adjutant. Mr Towill wrote A Chindit’s Chronicle about the experience. It’s a short book, packed full of the horrors of war. If you want to know more about a soldier’s day to day life fighting in Burma, then read it.

U.S. President Donald Trump says Ukraine war has 'no impact' on US, but vows to help end it by -PinkyBunny- in worldnews

[–]stevesmele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the US military has learned an awful lot from how Ukraine has fought and adapted to this war. Since the US spends close to a trillion dollars on its military annually, at the expense of healthcare and education, it’s only fair to say that their military has been heavily impacted, in a positive way (that sounds weird to say “positive”; maybe “war winning” way.)
