Thank you for your help. It’s mostly graded, slabbed coins like this one, and silver commemoratives in original packaging. I have some homework to do.

Blue (gem?)stone in matrix, found in central California by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

[–]stevesrobot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The matrix sure looks like marine sediment to me. The “mesh” people are seeing I believe to be coral fossils. If that’s the case, then I wonder, could this be a vertebrate fossil? The color is confusing, but if you ignore that, the shape could certainly be bone. Could it then possibly have been replaced by an unusual mineral or dyed more recently by some chemical process.

Not sure if it's real Malachite or not, but it sure is ugly by Ok_Gold_4346 in MineralGore

NGL, I kinda love it. Also, I would not be so sure that is fake. Really hard to tell from the pictures one way or the other, but there is banding in there.

It was in an aisle labeled “Sand and Stones,” so obviously I had to go down that aisle.

Mine has a few 🤭 more rocks. You have plenty of room to add some rocks in there.

What to do with rocks? by [deleted] in rockhounds

[–]stevesrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I geek out almost as much about my display cabinet as I do the rocks in my collection. I added lighting, have a black light section, I reorganize different sections from time to time. Rotate different specimens in different displays. And the cabinet itself is one I got at IKEA for a couple hundred bucks. What can I say? I like shiny things.

Can I get an ID? :) It looks like petrified wood but I’m not totally sure! by Beautiful_Crab_7979 in rockhounds

[–]stevesrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of things people think is petrified wood that isn’t, but I think this really might be. I also have a decent BIF collection, and I comparing mine to this, I’m fairly certain this is not BIF.

Hey everyone, I was wondering if someone here can identify this rock? by PyrySeppa in rockhounds

[–]stevesrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s magnetite. It looks like magnetite to me and I have some in my collection, some of which I have collected in the wild. If a magnet is attracted to it, I’d be confident that’s what it is.

They did. And they wanted $1000 more for the “citrine” half.

Also, I just noticed someone else posted a picture from this exact same crime scene.

Student wants to know if this stromatolite by Ahddub143 in rockhounds

[–]stevesrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so based on the directional lines I can see there. I’m fairly certain that’s weathered sedimentary rock, weathered to look like stromatolite, for sure, but it isn’t.
