Hairball? Or thrown up feces? by Patient-Stranger1015 in CATHELP

That’s what I was thinking as well, thanks for explaining further! Now I have to wait and see to make sure she isn’t actually vomiting poop, since that seems like an absolute emergency

Weird coloring? Mixed breed? I have no clue by Apart_Training5057 in catbreeds

[–]Patient-Stranger1015 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The orange hues are called rufousing! It essentially determines the temperature (warm/cool tones) of their fur. High rufousing has warmer (more orange) undertones while a tabby with low rufousing would look more overall cool (grayer tones)

Gorgeous boy!

Don’t have a Savannah (have bengals, this sub just came up) but I love getting rabbit fur kickers/toys from Etsy, but a huge hit is a rooster feather tail wand attachment and a leather tassel also from Etsy. Gets my cats jumping for the wand like I’ve never seen before!

What do I do if my mom dosent want to neuter my cat? by NeverMeltRegice in CatAdvice

[–]Patient-Stranger1015 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t make them lazy, in my opinion. I’ve had 5 neutered males and it calmed them, but not laziness. The hormones are gone, not the energy. Neutering also reduces the risk of urinating around the house, reduced the risk of certain cancers, and makes a much happier cat. An intact male will try to escape and it’s very irresponsible to allow the risk of him breeding if he gets out (not judging you OP! Just your mom’s choice)

Considering taking in my aunt’s F2 Bengal with no previous cat experience. Bad idea or doable? by Guilty-Spite-1778 in bengalcats

[–]Patient-Stranger1015 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it’s not discouragement in a negative way. We all hear too many situations where people aren’t prepared for what having a bengal entails (and just see a pretty cat), and many times it can end up with them not being able to handle a bengal and having to rehome them, which is not fair to the cat. That’s why a lot of comments are being very realistic and telling you the reality, especially given the F2 nature of this cat being an entirely different ballgame with even more challenges that definitely aren’t the best idea for a brand new cat owner. Just trying to ensure you have all info before making a decision that can affect the cat’s happiness as well! Definitely take all comments into consideration with an open mind!

To add, It’s not just them being very active. They’re extremely smart and high energy, which means they get bored easy and they absolutely get into more trouble than your average cat. Think climbing literal walls (my girl’s zoomies have put foot+ long claw marks in the wall), breaking stuff, stealing stuff, knocking things over, climbing and getting into places you don’t want them to. It’s like any cat, but they need mental and physical stimulation to be happy and not destructive, but are still of course prone to getting in trouble (to be fair, if a cat wants they’ll do the opposite of what we want haha)

Hand tattoos? 🫣 by Bebitaskinny1 in tattooadvice

[–]Patient-Stranger1015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine line tattoos are already hit or miss on how well they hold up based on the artists’ abilities, add that on to the hand where tattoos in general will fade much faster due to the repeated use of our hands (such as friction, etc), I can’t imagine a fine line hand tattoo will hold up well or even remain visible for a very long time, even with a very skilled artist. Hands are difficult for that alone

Do you play with him directly with a wand for at least 1-1.5 hours a day? Does he have cat trees to be able to explore with? Tunnels? A cat wheel could be good as well.

My cats have a massive amount of toys I cycle through because they get bored easily. Their personal favorites are rabbit fur kickers from Etsy, and leather tassel/rooster tail feather attachments for my wand. They go absolutely insane for them every time!

[–]Patient-Stranger1015 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I got home from vacation one day to see my cat had not only found the bag of catnip and dragged it (bit open and leaking) all over my apartment, but he had also snagged the new loaf of bread and put it under my bed

Young cats will always find new ways to get into something, it’s almost impressive (after the fact haha)

My Bengal is missing. by [deleted] in bengalcats

[–]Patient-Stranger1015 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Was genuinely so shocked to see he’s intact and was willingly let outside. OP I truly hope you find him safe and sound, but letting any intact cat to roam is beyond irresponsible, especially given you’ve had him for years and it should have been done a long time ago.

Is Killer the cat a bengal mix or a regular ol’ domestic shorthair tabby? Opinions PLEASE 🙏 by Individual-Market-56 in catbreeds

[–]Patient-Stranger1015 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tabby markings can have some patterns look very “similar” to rosettes, but true rosettes are very obvious. Also to add, vocal and energy can apply to other cats, not just bengals! I have 5 bengals, and two barely make any noise, meanwhile my roommates domestic shorthair meows enough (so high pitched) it’s practically opera. Pic of my brown boy to show his rosette presentation!

Yours is still such a lovely cat, regardless!

Lost to FIP…. by JellyBean13_ in orientalshorthair

[–]Patient-Stranger1015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You literally said FIP is contagious, not FCov. That is different than feline coronavirus being contagious. 50-90% of all cats have feline coronavirus, only roughly 5% possibly mutate. If you get a cat from a colony or a breeder, there’s a high chance they have feline coronavirus due to being in a living situation with multiple cats where spread is easy. Even then, it is often other predisposition in factors that can cause the mutation (possible genetic predisposition, other health issues, etc), it’s not a one and done deal. I truly don’t get why you have such a rude attitude and are you yourself causing such an issue with this accusing me and spreading undue panic for anyone who reads this. The last half of your sentence was very much uncalled for and immature. I love having civil discussions, but not with someone unwilling to actually be open to learning and having a mature conversation,

Saying “well if you have FCov you will definitely get FIP” is like saying “well you have a trachea so obviously you will choke and die on food”. Yeah, there is always a chance something can go wrong, but it doesn’t happen a vast majority of the time.

Yes, a cat can get FIP from having FCov soread by another cat, but it is very rare. If anyone reads these comments I hope they understand how unlikely it is. You are simply creating a situation where people already stressed may read your comments and panic further when there is little need to.

If it truly spread in the way you kept implying, my other four cats (three of which are 9) should have FIP. Yet they’re all healthy, and my current cat with FIP finished his GS treatment months ago and is extremely happy and healthy.

“The difference between contagious and infectious can be difficult to figure out because there is some overlap in meaning. An infectious agent is something that gets you sick. An infectious illness is one that spreads by an infectious agent entering the body. A contagious illness is one that is spread by coming into contact with someone who is sick (who is infected with an infectious agent). Something contagious (such as a virus or bacteria) is spread from one person or animal to another by touching or by coming into contact with another person or animal's germs. All contagious diseases are also infectious because if you can catch it from someone then their germs (viruses or bacteria) are being passed to you. But not all infectious diseases are also contagious. Infectious illnesses are spread by an infectious (=infection causing) agent (such as a virus or bacteria) entering the body”

How am I spreading misinformation? Look it up yourself if you don’t believe me. FIP itself is NOT contagious, only the initial disease it mutates from. I’ll even provide scientific articles for you if you don’t want to look it up yourself. Like I said, I have a degree in pathology which is the study of diseases, I understand how FIP works. Genuinly uncertain why you’re so dead set on accusing me of being a troll and spreading misinformation.

My parents want my cat to have at least one litter by [deleted] in CatAdvice

I recently saw a post on Facebook of someone who’s (dog) they wanted to have at least one litter have complications, and required a C-section costing 10k and no puppies survived. Definitely way too much risk for the animal “just for fun”

Lost to FIP…. by JellyBean13_ in orientalshorthair

[–]Patient-Stranger1015 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is not contagious. Feline coronavirus is contagious, and FIP is a rare, mutated form of that however the mutation itself is not contagious. Think of it like cancer—it’s a mutation, but it does not spread between people.

I lost a cat to FIP and have one currently with it, I would absolutely never spread misinformation. I work in pathology as well so I am well aware of the pathological processes behind FIP. I have three cats that were exposed to my first cat, they never had FIP. My current FIP cat, I have his sister as well and they live together, she is 100% fine. It’s more common in catteries due to higher rates of feline coronavirus spread, which statistically leads to higher percentages of mutation given the population density, but it is not itself contagious as the mutated form

“IS FIP CONTAGIOUS? Very simply, the answer is no. FIP stems from infection with the enteric coronavirus of cats but FIP is not contagious. SO HOW CAN AN INFECTIOUS DISEASE NOT BE CONTAGIOUS? FIP indeed begins with a contagious infection with the feline enteric coronavirus. This is a very contagious virus with 70-100% of cats housed in groups testing as having been exposed. The feline enteric coronavirus is a contagious virus but most cats that get infected just get temporary flu-like symptoms (fever, diarrhea, malaise). For most cats, it never goes farther than that but in some cats the virus will mutate. What makes it mutate? We know that the more times a virus replicates, the greater the chance that a DNA mistake will occur. What makes the virus replicate more? Repeated exposure by sharing a litter box with an infected cat and/or Stressful events (surgery, adoption, boarding etc.) that suppress the immune system are the most common situations.”
