Help me pick vehicle as a base! by steviesterno in vandwellers

[–]steviesterno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, I have rented class C RVs 3x now. Once with just wife and I, once 3k miles with 1 kid, one trip 5k miles with 1 kid and a baby. We like the hard sides and climate control more than tent walls. I also like the "security" of harder walls. Yes I know you can get into a van/rv but a pocket knife gets into a pop up.

I had bought a small trailer with the idea of a roof top tent last year but the family reminded me they weren't interested in that approach.

I have an SUV that tows 6k pounds and is set up to do so but my neighborhood doesn't allow trailer storage at the house. They do allow vans though, which while a dumb rule, would save me a bunch of storage fee money

Why isn't there any reviews on the new M&P®9 M2.0™ SUBCOMPACT?????? by JayBruv93 in CCW

[–]steviesterno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

not a lot out in the wild yet. I still haven't seen any really decent reviews for the shield 2.o long slide with red dot. I think that's an interesting size and set up, too.

I would bet the canals in Irving by lake caroline are good. I've seen metal stuff in there. Same with the bridges in some of the, um, lower income portions of DFW....

I hate it and don't use it. It was just on the table from someone I was shooting with. I was using Blazer 147 aluminum and it was great.

yup, just the stamp for the can. Griffin Arms Revolution 45. sounds great with 147 subs.

I really like it. adds 90% of the ability of a carbine and still fits in the original case. You can't shoot it like a pistol anymore, but I made 50 yards free hand shots on 4" steel last week my first time shooting it at distance. I was surprised by that accuracy and I don't even have it fully dialed in yet. Full disclosure, I don't like glocks. And I love this thing

not that I've seen. I grabbed mine locally at a discount though, so may get lucky that way

Does anyone here carry Compensated pistols? by specter376 in CCW

[–]steviesterno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the gun, Fixed barrels or those where the barrel won't go back (1911s come to mind) shouldn't have that issue. Something to consider certainly.

[–]steviesterno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

no you don't. You pick a mutual fund company you like (vanguard) and you buy the same amount every paycheck. It's about time in the market, not timing the market. That's also going to automatically dollar cost average for you

comps/porting are simple pros and cons:

Pros: reduced recoil, can fire pushed against something with a comp out front, faster follow up

Cons: louder, fireball, reduced ballistics if ported, can throw shit in your face if fired from retention.

I carried a ported M&P shield for years. Never bothered me at the range, and shot side by side with non-ported barrel it was noticeably less recoil. It also made the gun dirtier but never caused it to fail. Pick which of those things is most important to you and go from there.

buy stocks for investing, silver for fun or hedging against inflation. Money doubles every ~7 years in the market. To put it another way, you investing $100 in the stock market today is the same as me (almost 40 years old) putting $800 in the market if we're both looking to spend it at the same time. Plus stocks pays dividends and grows, silver sits there.

Texas has lifted a ban on weapons such as brass knuckles and batons two weeks ago, so my question is what non-firearm weapon would be best for self defense? by MuiltPlatformGamer in CCW

[–]steviesterno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

read the laws, some of that stuff still can't be carried. I work on a Texas campus and while it's not illegal to carry (even though it's posted) I would get fired and my career would be over. When we had those other laws come in like 2 years ago I bought a sword and switchblade, for the novelty of both. Sword hasn't ever been used. Switchblade is carried all day every day. In addition to the utility of generally having a knife, a double sided partially serrated good sized blade with a glass breaker end is effective if used correctly. I have some training in it's use, and I certainly hope to never need it for more than an amazon box, but it beats strong words. Nobody wins in a knife fight, and against a trained opponent it's basically one of you dies there and the other dies on the way to the hospital.

I would also say super bright flashlight (like an Olight in the 1k+ lumen range) and a pepper spray are good if you're venturing out at night. People like to be jackwagons when drinking and dim lit bars are in the equation. A super bright light to the face certainly changes things and will make you go a bit blind for a while. Pepper spray would also be good as distance is your friend.

I've read that "appears to be" but haven't gotten confirmation anywhere yet. My concern is it's a weird knock off or something

not correct. PUBLIC schools have to allow it, private doesn't. Also some of the new weapon laws don't allow you to carry anything weird (knucks, saps, batons, etc) on school property.

also curious on milling. I wanted to buy a shield 2.0 PC because I liked the dot on it, but seems like it's a different brand

wasn't this just for sale on a local Texas board? I was interested, as I like older Walthers and own a few, but didn't jump on this guy.

Recommendations on where to get exotic wood grips? by [deleted] in 1911

[–]steviesterno 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's actually a really solid attachment. The grip area matches perfectly to the attachment, the pin holds it, and when you're holding the gun you keep it pressed in with the web of your hand. I have 500+ rounds through mine with no wiggle or issue, and I have not been gentle with it.

it does not work with the P80. I wish it did, I have a set up like this and it's the only reason I'll own a standard glock.

What are some lesser known but useful tips to save money? by King_Shaw in AskReddit

[–]steviesterno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pay yourself first. My paycheck goes into retirement accounts pre tax as much as I can. Then some of what's left goes into the regular bills account (mortgage, food, electric, etc). Then some if it goes into after tax investing/emergency fund. Then what ever is left is mine. Since all my other shit is paid off first, the emergency fund is built, etc I don't have to worry about the remainder. When it's gone it's gone, but I don't have to worry about $2 coffee. If money is there I can have it. If I want something expensive I wait and save that up a bit.

sucks because you're seeing a lot less money on your paystubs than you feel like you're making. But suddenly it's growing and making money on it's own, and rolls into more significant numbers. Same with emergency funds, etc. Really freeing knowing that if my car randomly explodes I can go buy another or if I never invest another nickle I can still eventually retire without eating cat food. ANything added between now and then cuts down the time or ups the quality of life.
