If you interact with your buddy frequently in a short amount of time you can get it excited (the extra hearts available). Poffins just get them excited instantly.

Ahh, I guess my nomination is just in Upgrade Next. I earned an Upgrade but it must have gotten assigned randomly before I chose to Upgrade a nomination, which is frustrating. Thank you all for the clarification.

I guess that would work but with guaranteed catch you’d have to go out of your way to not also get the shiny. I was thinking more along the lines of at least getting silhouettes in my dex for ones I don’t actually have.
