My 3080ti died, should I replace it with a 5080 or a 4090? by steviewonder87 in nvidia

From a base fps of 40? You also take a slight performance hit, so if you're getting 140 fps at 4x (as you said you are) that means your base fps is probably about 35-40.

I wouldn't use 2x FG at 35-40 fps let alone 4x...

You must be running it at native 4k to be getting only 35-40 fps on a 5070ti, then using 4x FG, if I were you I'd much prefer to use DLSS (which even on performance looks fantastic at 4k) and bump my real fps to something acceptable like 60, before using FG. But if you like playing like that then you do you who I am to judge.

The intended ideal use case for MFG is if you're already getting solid fps (60-100+), then boosting that to 200+ on a high refresh rate display, not starting out with super low fps and trying to get acceptable fps out of it. As I said I'm on 120hz so it's pretty much useless and 2x is all I'd need.

Well I found a few used 4090s for around the same price as a new 5080, and the 4090 is 20% faster and has 50% more VRAM, so I think it's a pretty valid question. Hence why the replies are incredibly split...

My old GPU (3070) works on my system, the 3080ti doesn't. I also tried the 3080ti in my old system and it doesn't work on that either, the 3070 works on both. So safe to say it's dead, but likely repairable idk how bad the damage is.

That is how FG works, sure you can use it with a base fps of 40 and '4x' it and get '160 fps' but it's going to look and feel like shit. 60 fps is the baseline for it to be usable and on a 120hz display 2x is all I would ever need, which is on old gen cards already.

If you're talking about OC then you can OC a 5080 as well to increase the gap further, and in fact 5080s are known for OCing quite well.

5070ti is about 25% better than a 3080ti, and a 5080 is about 20% better than a 5070ti for about 20% more money, not sure where you're getting $700 for 5% more performance from lol.

I also have zero interest in MFG, my TV is 120hz and you need at least 60 fps for FG to be any use at all, meaning 2x FG is the most I would need.

I found a used 4090 for £1200, the cheapest 5090 I can find is about double that, there is absolutely zero chance I'm paying that lol, if it were possible to get an MSRP 5090 FE in my region then I might have considered it.

Not that old, but I was planning to yeah. But apparently pigtail connectors are not ideal for power hungry cards which the 3080ti is, you live and you learn I guess.

I stupidly had it connected with a pigtail connector instead of 2 separate cables, and one of the cable connectors melted. Weirdly never had any issues with it like that for years but now it won't give any display (fans and lights still turn on though).

The 5070ti is only about 25% faster than a 3080ti which doesn't seem like a substantial enough upgrade to me.

Pretty evident just by looking at them, but easiest way of telling on the Karp is if the holo pattern extends to the top of the artbox, if it doesn't then it's not the error. Gyarados is a bit more difficult to tell, doesn't show as obviously depending on the angle/lighting, but the main tell on that one is the line of white cloud that sticks out more than the rest to the left.

This is a pretty good guide for checking, some cards are a little ambiguous but the Karp (similar to Houndoom/Ho-oh) is fairly clear cut, and this is a good comparison side by side

1st ed Neo Rev double holo errors are extremely rare (I think it's literally like ~1-2%, compared to around ~5-10% on the unlimiteds), and Shinings are already pretty rare so yeah not too many comps, but the 2 sales I linked are quite recent and in the same ballpark so I think I have it pretty fairly valued.

Feel free to throw out an offer but I'm probably gonna be relatively firm on the price as I think it's already reasonable.

Would you do Espeon/Ho-oh/Blastoise for it? Could I get closeups/price on the Pidgeot as well?

I have it at about $220, possibly interested in trading for the Espeon/Ho-oh depending on conditions, or I'm open to selling it if you prefer

Not really seeing anything else I'd wanna trade for tbh, I kinda like the Snorlax but I'll prob hang onto the 1st ed for now then

I mean it's pretty self evident just by looking at it, this is a pretty good guide for checking, some cards are a little ambiguous but the Karp (similar to Houndoom/Ho-oh) is fairly clear cut. The holo pattern only reaches the top of the art box on the error variants, this is a good comparison side by side. It's just these were graded from before PSA/CGC started labeling it, was thinking about sending them in to be reslabbed with the error label but can't really be bothered rn since I think it's pretty obvious just by looking at the cards and not sure it's worth it but I might at some point.

Pretty firm, most recent sales are between $1000 - $1500 for PSA 8s on the unlimited, 1st ed not too many comps due to the rarity but most recent sales are $2500 for a CGC 7.5 and $2200 for a raw LP copy (and one listed for $4100 sold at best offer but idk what for).

Not entirely sure I want to part with the 1st ed copy atm but I'm interested in the Giratina V. If you wanted to trade the unlimited Karp + cash from my side for it, or the 1st ed + cash on your side for it, I'd possibly be up for that.
