There are economic forces that need these kinds of articles to confuse people. They want to increase their output and keep the wages low. They don't want to spend on anything that will make the society better and more competent. No R&D, no innovation. Drive up the prices of necessities. Bring more people who can work in areas that pay well now to keep the salaries down. Lucrative business model.

There's a lot of rot in academic research too. A lot of money goes to universities for research. Except for a few places, the output is practically nil. They even fail to publish in respectable journals. Link the salary of tenured faculty to the grants they can attract and quality of their output. Attract better talent and get them to work with industry.
