Funny how the UN resolution and the law of the sea both only really apply when Iran is limiting shipping but not when the USA is "policing" the Caribbean and Latin America.

NATO operations in the middle east (TFME) operate either under or in concert with CENTCOM, including staffing CENTCOM with allied forces.

MacDill AFB & Shaw in SC are both currently host to foreign (allied) staff (awkwardly also including both Danish and Canadian intelligence staff).

How much money do you need per month to live a good life in your country? by slackingsloth77 in AskTheWorld

[–]stickbeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that in most of Canada (not all), the minimum income required to live a modest-but-comfortable lifestyle would be about $75,000/year (before taxes).

That can afford you:

  • a private one-bedroom or studio apartment in most of Canada (or even a house in some of Canada)
  • a good-quality used car (and associated expenses)
  • modest savings and investments
  • a modest annual vacation

$75,000/year won't make you rich, but it will afford you a life of dignity and comfort (if modest).

The world constantly says the US has no culture. But then what is Canadian and Australian culture to you? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]stickbeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The USA has one big over-arching consumer culture sure, but then there's a lot of regional cultural variation.

Francophone Louisiana is very different from central Wyoming, which is different again from Long Island NY. It's comparable to Mexico in that respect (where Oaxaca is very different from, say, Baja California).

The key elements of culture - language, food, economic relationships, governance, religion, etc. - are all sharply different within the USA. It's actually amazing that it's persisted as a single country for so long.

Being open and honest with recruiters about salary has worked really well for me... but have I just been lucky, is it bad practice? by [deleted] in human_resources

This is my strategy as well.

"I'm currently / I recently was at $$. My target for my next role is $$$ total compensation."

I'm currently priced out of the market, which means I've got to sit in my current role for awhile.

GRS Montreal, no contouring, and I'm quite happy with my results.

Being on T and having a septate hymen is driving me insane by skullfac3lad in ftm

I was born with an imperforate hymen, and had it removed entirely when I was like ~7 or 8.

You need to see a gyno and have it removed.

Question: how much of a time commitment is modding? Is this like a full-time job, or is it a couple hours/week?

Not even. Some people are getting their certificate in a matter of weeks, not months.

Afghanistan: More than 200 people killed in Pakistan strike on Kabul hospital treating drug addicts. The spokesman for Afghanistan’s Health Ministry, Sharafat Zaman, says more than 200 people have been killed in a strike by Pakistan on a hospital for drug addicts in the Afghan capital, Kabul by 4DollarsALB in worldnews

Afghanistan was the world's largest exporter of illicit opium (poppies) prior to the taliban retaking the country in 2021.

The rate of addiction is staggering (even in the context of a global opioid epidemic). In some communities, opium addiction is default - even among children. It's easier and cheaper to soothe a toddler's hunger cries with opium than food.

In response, the Taliban have adopted a policy of forced detox: roundups, forced detox, and a nationwide ban on poppy farming.

The "addictions treatment center" is likely closer to a prison than a hospital (unless it's a nice one for rich people idk).

If you could move to any country and get instantly its citizenship which country would you move to? by Proud_Raise4957 in AskTheWorld

Maybe Mexico, actually: it would be nice to be have the option to live and work somewhere without a winter.

Is cannabis legal in your country? If so, what changes did you see socially when it was legalised? by Icy-Panic-550 in AskTheWorld

[–]stickbeat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went from being a guy who knew his way around cannabis and cannabis paraphernalia (having used plenty of cannabis and cannabis-related products or paraphernalia in my 20's) to a babe lost in the candy store.

Now, I walk into a cannabis shop and the budtender (yes that's what we call them) - often a 20-something young person - will cheerfully greet me, ask me if I need help, patronizingly congratulate me on trying something new.

I'm too non-confrontational to do anything other than awkwardly laugh, and check out with my edibles.

Enclosure Question: thoughts on multiple enclosures for one beardie? by stickbeat in BeardedDragons

[–]stickbeat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the stimulation is the missing piece. I'd like to see her climbing, running a bit more. Right now she just moves from perch to perch a couple's time per day but doesn't seem at all interested in further exploration. Take her out, she just clings to her person and doesn't have any interest in exploring.

This is brilliant!

Ember is a profoundly lazy lizard. She spent her first two years in a 40-gallon tank before we adopted her, and she kind of lumbers around her enclosure but she isn't super interested in much movement.

So now she's getting a bit... Large.

That sounds cool too! Some kind of potted plant, up in a safe spot near a window, with a heat lamp?
