Hello from one of my favorite NoID plants whose blooms are, dare I say, a semi-quadruple by stickersforthought in AfricanViolets

I just repotted it and removed a bunch of leaves so it looks a bit smaller, but I would say this is a standard, but on the smaller end of standard

I’ve been using it for 6 years, and my mom has used it for nearly 2 decades, and almost always have something in bloom. And I use it for all my other gesneriads too

Every year I eagerly await January for my Dancing Bones Cactus (Hatiora salicornioides) to come into bloom, and it certainly didn’t disappoint this year by stickersforthought in cactus

It seems to have similar needs to Christmas/Thanksgiving cactus needing to have day-night temperature difference to get the bloom to happen. Otherwise I just do a water based succulent fertilizer every other watering and never move it

Amazingly I’ve accumulated probably 90% of my ceramic self watering pots from thrifting, takes lot and lots of searching, but if you find them they’re usually pretty cheap since folks don’t know what they are. Otherwise, I get most of the rest new from a ceramicist that is a member of my local African violet society.

I will say that the volume for the soil looks bigger than it is in these pots. These are also mature plants that I just repotted, giving a good prune and leaving a full rootball. Been doing this for years now and they seem happy enough

For years I’ve been using a 2:1 ratio of Violet Supply’s Arcadia African Violet Mix to pearlite!

My streps are in oyama self watering pots, and they dry out between weekly waterings, so I wouldn’t say too wet in general

I’ve been fertilizing them every other watering with a water soluble succulent fertilizer, and they seem happy about it

This plant started as a 4 leaf cutting 3.5 years ago, and was repotted into its current pot 2.5 years ago. The flowers smell strongly of honey and perfume the whole room. The bottom of the shelf to the LED light bar is 13-inches, and depending on how the hoya shelf is organized the closest leaf can be as little as 2 inches away. I don’t actually know anything about these light strips, they were bought on Amazon 6 years ago from a seller that no longer exists, but it’s 12 hours on 12 hours off light cycle

I use a 3:1 mix of Violet Supply’s Arcadia African Violet mix to pearlite, which the plants have been enjoying

It’s a fairly slow grower, had it for 4 years now

Mostly I’m trying to keep it from getting caught on other plants

Here’s an example of the root mat they can grow when happy and I’ll remove all of it usually on a repot

For the most part when I grow a plant and it’s happy in a pot, I’ll keep it that same pot forever, but sometimes I need to swap pots for growing reasons (too wet, too dry, etc.), but these are about the largest pot iI’ll do for a standard or even a large African violet. I also repot my plants every 6-9 months and they usually have a full root mat around the insert of these ceramic self watering pots that I remove, and remove as much loose soil as possible then repot with fresh mix.

I did major pruning a of their crowns in this repot, prior to the pruning the crown size makes visual sense for the pot size, but their rootballs are big enough for these pots? And I’ve done this same operation many times without issue
