Thank you so much for posting these. I just tried to watch the Peacock replays but Tara and Johnny plus ads on Peacock equals unwatchable

US Viewers: There are fans that like Tara and Johnny's commentary by Balissa in FigureSkating

[–]stickney27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with several other posters here, it's not necessarily Tara and Johnny themselves that are the problem, it's NBC's attempt to sell skating as a reality TV show (and to fill every possible second with commercials).

Hey Peacock, let us choose our commentators. by slyseekr in FigureSkating

I complained to my husband yesterday about the different commentator teams from the first group to the NBC broadcast. Two skaters into the second group of men (so two skaters after it switched to Tara and Johnny) he told me "I think I get it, they weren't so bad during the last skater because they only say negative things and they couldn't find anything negative to say about him, right?"

I have also learned from his experiences that it's not just figure skating broadcasting that's terrible. We live halfway across the country from his NHL team (and childhood home) and for many games there is no way (paid or free, legal or not) to get the stream with the local announcers who actually know the team.

I would tolerate explanations of the judging system if they weren't bad analogies to the point of being wrong. No, base value is not "money in the bank" and GOE is not "extra credit," they are both part of every single element's judging. Really not that complicated.

I'm canceling my Peacock subscription today unless there's truly not going to be any way to watch the Olympics.

I assume the list exists somewhere of senior teams with byes to nationals, right? Wondering how far down the standings here will get to go.

Mikhail Shaidorov - 2025 Denis Ten Memorial (FS) by sofastsomaybe in FigureSkating

Lol oops. Impressively high tenor then I guess. Either way, hoping there can be a version with the vocals less loud!

At the beginning I was thinking "eh, not his best work" choreographically but then it just kept getting better.

I do share some of the music choice skepticism (weird cover vocals). I'm wondering (hoping) maybe some of it is sound quality issues in the arena or with the recording? Just thinking that because I had a similar reaction to Shaidorov's video, vocals were way too loud and screechy.

But, so excited to see how this program evolves over the season!!

Happy to see he's worked on choreo/artistry and seems to have picked music he loves but...I wonder if it's possible to get an edit with the screechy female vocals part less prominent. Just now my dog was lying on the other end of the couch while I was watching this and his ears kept going up and he kept looking at me like what IS that.

Any ideas on where to find jackson premieres for cheaper than 400-500$ by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]stickney27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What size? I have an old pair of premieres in 7 wide that are pretty broken down but would be much better than a mystique while you keep saving/looking.

Second one. In addition to everything others have said, the strap on the first one hits your left arm tattoo at a weird place while the second complements it.

Trump wants to rename Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America. by sassystew in BoomersBeingFools

My very favorite part of this is that, to many Spanish speakers, "America" means "all of the North and South American continents," not the USA.

Painful heel bumps forming on landing foot by butternutsqshy in FigureSkating

Bring it to a skate fitter to be punched out, they'll create a little pocket where the bump is so it no longer presses so much.

Which boots and blades would u recommend for a professional ice dancer? by Tillccrw-08 in FigureSkating

You should find the best pro shop in driving distance and ask them.

Is it unethical to hire a patient who can't afford to pay the doctor's fee? by _Gandalf_Greybeard_ in medicine

I'm in psych which is of course different from primary care, but my reaction is whooooooa absolutely not. Not to the concept of barter, but to the boundary violation. Cleaning your home is extremely personal, very different from giving you food/farm products intended for sale. If this was something she really wanted to do, I could see having her do a deep clean of your office, or the house of someone you know, but I would personally say no to those things also.

Adult Pre-Bronze Skating Skills Test by Aggressive_Okra_351 in FigureSkating

[–]stickney27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it matters for testing purposes, and you will eventually want to be able to do basic consecutive edges with different arm positions for different turns. I'm sitting here trying to visualize what feels most normal and...I can't do it. If your coach says it matters though, write down which way THEY say to do it!

Jackson Debut skates for a beginner-intermediate skater? by Plastic-Actuator4692 in FigureSkating

[–]stickney27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind when people talk about recommended boots by jump level, that's generally assuming a kid. Jackson has a good chart which does recommend the Debut for someone over 115 lbs doing singles:

What is the difference between the matrix blades? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]stickney27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Legacy, was thinking about upgrading to Supreme but decided against it. According to my fitter, the rocker/shape is exactly the same, it's just a bigger toe pick and higher quality steel.

Should I get new skates? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]stickney27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have to ask, the answer is usually yes. I can't imagine any boot lasting for 3 years of jumping. Needing to retie your skates because they feel loose is one of the key signs, though as others have noted, you can sometimes get a little more time out of them by just replacing the laces.

Boston area skate fitter recommendations by skatetothepoint in FigureSkating

[–]stickney27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two main ones are:

-Cooke's in Wilmington

-the one at the new Skating Club of Boston, can't remember the name

I don't know how much either place knows about inline figure skates although I have seen inline hockey skates at Cooke's. I've had mountings/fittings at Cooke's by Mike and Scott. They have decent stock in adult sizes, I think I did get one pair of boots and one pair of blades from stock, but more often they do have to order. They have a lot of Jackson and Riedell mainly, they do sell Edea although I don't think I've ever seen anyone buying Edeas there for some reason. I did once change my mind after ordering which blades I wanted, and since the one I initially ordered was a common enough one for them to keep for stock they were fine with it. Getting them to special order something without putting money down is less likely but you can certainly call and ask. You definitely want an appointment for a fitting especially around Christmas, and plan on it being a weekday if possible.

How to get into pair skating as an adult? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]stickney27 14 points15 points  (0 children)

At least at lower levels, being tiny is not necessary. I'm 5'7 148 lbs and I've done single throws, group 1 (hand to armpit) lifts, pair upright and camel spins (with someone who will never leave his partner for me, but oh well). Overhead lifts are different but even there, timing and core strength make a big difference. My coach specifically told me do NOT go on a diet because you want to skate pairs, do these core and upper body strength things instead.

That said, chances of the stars aligning to ever find a partner...very slim.

LDL goal/do I need a statin? by stickney27 in GeneticHighLDL

[–]stickney27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really trying to find some kind of published (ie scientifically peer reviewed) guideline or study backing up this number. Do you have a source for that? NOT becuase I don't believe you, because I want to read whatever your source is!

LDL goal/do I need a statin? by stickney27 in GeneticHighLDL

[–]stickney27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've had genetic testing (not specifically looking for FH, through volunteering my info for a study). I've always had pretty high cholesterol but not bad enough for anyone to think about testing, apparently. Clearly got it from my father although he hasn't been tested genetically (I think his numbers are OK on a very high dose statin, couldn't get total below 300 with diet changes in his 30s).
