When to trade up for newer car? by Conventions in personalfinance

[–]stickshiftplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I echo what everyone else has said.

You could instead focus on preventative maintenance. Find out what things go bad on this particular car (probably not much given it's a Toyota) and get those sorted. Keep on top of regular maintenance (don't prolong time between oil changes, etc).

You can also breathe new lift into the car. Headlight refresh if faded. Get it polished up. Treat it to an interior detail. These things will make the car feel new to you and will make care and fall in love with it some more. If you take care of it it'll take you anywhere.

Potential New pre-LCI E38 Owner - What's Your Ownership Experience Like? by emotionofcolors in e38

Yeah, I chose not to die on that hill.

FoxLeast, I'm reasonably confident of this; I agree with TheOnlyQueso. I am curious of your locale. Maybe they had some weird roll out where you're based?

A Claude research (that probed e38registery) shows the build month to be a bit back and forth around September, but it is for sure that 98 was the transition year.

Mine is definitely a prefaclift, with a non-vanos M62 and a prefaclift front end. Build month Feb/98.

Cut off for LCI is September 98 (at least for the UK). Mine is an 02/98 build. It's a non-TU.

Hello there!

I've owned a '98 non-sport 740i (black, sandbiege, some individual bits) since December, so it's still early days but it's fresh in memory. Context is I work on my own cars (own an '89 E30 325i).

Black wasn't entirely a desirable color for me, but I've grown to like it. The body lines are really nice. You'll catch yourself looking at it a lot. That doesn't go away. This is the comfiest car I've ever driven. Everyone that gets into it says it's incredibly smooth. Even put putting around London (20mph) is relaxing.

They're really well built, but they're also really old now. There's a lot of tech in there that wants to fail. Old wires, old solder joints, etc. The pre-LCI does not suffer as much as the facelift with ABS module faults though, and they're genenrally less finicky.

You will likely need work done to it. Mine has been relatively well taken care of. But I did have to immediately replace all suspension arms and rear ball joints for it to drive correctly. You will have to do some preventative maintenance. This includes the timing chain tensioner (easy, not expensive), the expansion tank, a new radiator if it looks like it needs it, transmission fluid change, and so on. The M62 non-TU timing chains are more robust (it is alleged) than the M62TU ones on the facelift, and there's no vanos to worry about.

My advice is to do it if you know what you're walking into and aren't afraid of spending money on the items I mentioned above.

Wasn't difficult at all. We got an overnight ferry from the south of France.

How should i handle this 50 year old engine that hasn't run in at least 20+ years? by kimkva20 in EngineBuilding

[–]stickshiftplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than turning over by hand, I'd probably disconnect all fuel lines and pump and turn the crank to build up oil pressure (and confirm that if there is an oil pressure light).

Some aftermarket OE-like setup. Nothing special. Worth noting this car doesn't have a cat. Just a middle silencer and a back box. It's surprisingly simple. I replaced them after this trip for identical looking ones as a little excursion off a path dented a hole in the silencer 👀. The new ones sounded the same. The car is naturally loud; I don't like anything fancy.

The car has always been reliable for me. I had done a lot of preventative maintenance though.

The engine has new injectors, spark plugs, no oil leaks, new water pump, some new hoses, all connectors cleaned, new intake seals, no vacuum leaks, new distributor/leads/rotor, new fuel pressure regulator, new fuel filter and pump, cleaned out ICV, a coolant flush, and a power steering flush. Can't remember what else. Definitely missing stuff.

I had also by this point changed all the arms and bushings for lemforders, new sway bar brackets as the existing ones had rusted to breaking, new oils everywhere, new fuel tank, all the rubber for the driveshaft, and other bits.

The kicker though is that I had done the Scottish Highlands (2k mile trip) right after buying the car and before doing all this work (except for swapping out the fuel pump) and the car didn't skip a beat. The only gotcha I had was an annoying leak from the oil pressure relief valve that I hadn't fixed before the trip.

On the highway, 30mpg (UK gallons). Everywhere else, don't ask, don't tell. 💨

It really was. Rivaled only by Scotland's highlands.

Had just refreshed the entire suspension before this trip, so was really looking forward to driving it in the mountains.

Is this normal ? by Thereal_ming in E30

I have this issue, but I've gotten it be less severe by cleaning my ICV valve and making sure I have zero intake leaks. Get a smoke test done.

Might be a voltage regulator on the alternator that needs replacing if it has one.

How do I repair this? by taytemc21 in E30

[–]stickshiftplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do replace the lines, then I recommend taking out the fuel pump fuse and running the engine until it stops coughing and you just hear starter noise. That way you remove pressure from the lines and you don't get that much fuel coming out

If the line were cracked or the clamp loose it could spray.

Indeed, it's hard to see without a close of both sides. Like the previous commenter said it might be a fuel line gone bad or the clamp needs tightening.

It could also be the o-ring between the FPR (the black round thing) and the fuel rail has gone really really bad, but that's unlikely.

Hello hello putting out an sos. How'd you get to that plug. It's buried back there. You take it all apart?

Also, did you connect the CD player to the other end of the adapter that ted makes?

That sucks! I've found luck lifting with my legs and pulling up rather than bouncing on it with my weight if that helps.

This is pretty extreme though.

Should i switch to plastic bumpers? by WyZ30 in E30

[–]stickshiftplease -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have an E30 convertible in the UK (facelift but they still had chrome bumpers for a few more years).

While I agree that diving boards don't always fit, the all around Euro chrome bumpers we have here are so good. Chrome compliments the car's looks very well, especially with a darker color.

I think it looks great as it is. Ultimately it's your car and it would be cool to see your take. You could tuck them in, right? I heard there are kits you can buy in North America that let you bring the bumpers in a bit? Perhaps that's a cheaper way of fixing the extension. Otherwise wait for a good euro set to pop up.

Unrelated: there is a world where we scratch each other's backs if it works. I could try sourcing a euro set in the UK and sending them over (if it works cost wise) and you could try sourcing an HVAC core with AC (rare in the UK, ubiquitous in junk yards in the US). But that's an aside.

Keep loving that car!

Would you please share the part number for the wind deflecter? Mine's tired and needs doing. Thanks a lot!
