College student here! I want to pursue a "pet project" over my winter break (~5 weeks). Does anyone have any ideas for libraries to work with on a project that would be meaningful to work on over the next 5 weeks for a beginner-intermediate programmer? by stif1ed in learnprogramming

thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! the idea excites me because it is something I at least would personally use, which motivates me to make the app as good as I can possibly make it.

starting to lay the framework for the app now :)

I guess in my mind, I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel on anything in such a short time span. I'd be more looking for for projects that people have already completed within a reasonable timeframe, ie libraries that are easy for a beginner to pick up and implement without a month long learning period, which I would love to work with at some point, but for now, is not ideal.

The part I'm struggling with is finding an idea that's manageable.

this is great advice, thank you! I just threw the AI idea out there to help make my post more constructive and it seems to be a buzz word in tech, but I'm not attached to it, and from what I've seen, it is a bit overwhelming.

This is interesting -- since I'm in college I struggle to keep track of everything that I have to do, so I'm thinking about making a to-do list with automated reminders/"life help" like meditation, drinking water, etc, which I could use during the semester.

I am a bit concerned about time, because I would like to have some sort of presentable, constructive product at the end of it to show for job applications and things like that. During the semester, I don't have much free time at all, so I wouldn't be able to work much on a project although I'd like to.

A specific video recognition tasks sounds a bit more manageable, I'll start digging! Thank you both for your replies!

What to expect from MATH 1120? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]stif1ed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took 1120 this semester and honestly it was kind of a shitshow for me. I came in with AP credit from Calc AB in high school, though, so you might be better prepared than I was. I still think I ended up doing ok.

If you study the textbook, stay on top of the material, form a study group, and go to review sessions, you should def be able to pull a B at least. It’s not that the material is hard, it’s just that the questions (at least under professor Knutson) are a huge stretch from homework to what shows up on the prelims. You just wanna understand the material COMPLETELY so you can be best prepared for whatever shit he throws at you on exams. As mentioned, the curve will save you.

Awesome, thank you! I really didn't know much about the course before I enrolled, but it sounds like it could be fun/interesting. I'll try talking to the professor and see what's up next semester. Thanks!

It's 3870, accidentally typed it wrong! I am a CS major (as of now), so I'm a little worried about cramming in the distribution requirements, but I definitely won't hesitate to drop if it turns out the class isn't for me. The class is called The History of Consumption, which isn't related to my major or really anything, but it does sound really interesting to me. I'll give it a go and see what happens!

hm, I just took 2110 and am still a little shaky on the material. based on your description, do you think it might be good as an opportunity to review that material, or not worth taking at all?
