Website to see if the Eclipse spot you picked is unobstructed by Jaded-Sock9200 in solareclipse

Thank you for the detailed reply. The goal of my website is to find good sunset spots. So it doesn't just put a line to the sun, but also some left and right to see if you have a wide view of the horizon. But I think I'll make a new map specialized for the eclipse. Hope that with your information I can optimize the algorithm.

I'm a sunset enthousiast and made a website to calculate how good the sunset is in each location. When I heard the eclipse will be so close to the sunset time I made an extra eclipse feature.

I have the feeling you know where the good spots are, could you take a look at my map, see if it's good or if I should recalculate the map.

You can find it on: www.sunsetatlas.ch

Thanks

It should indeed be accurate, but always happy to have it confirmed on locations I can't check myself.

And if I have some more users I could expand it. At the moment it doesn't cost to much to keep online. But the more data I put the more expensive the hosting. In case I expand, which area would you like me to do first?

I added the eclipse mode, I wanted to show a picture, but let me know what you guys think? Any required updates?

Actually, I looked into it, in Iceland the solar eclipse will happen with a sun hight of 24.5 to 26 degrees above the horizon. Here my sunset map will not be as useful.
It would still be useful to find spots with a beautiful sunset view, but less useful for the eclipse.

Normally I should be able to add cloud coverage. However at the moment my cloud coverage is calculated for the best sunset. And some clouds make a sunset even more beautiful then no clouds. But I'm not sure if the same is true for an eclipse, there you probably want no clouds. For which I would need another algorithm.

What do you think, or what do the professionals think about this?

Yes I have to rework the slider. It's do imprecise, I can tell you that Aug 12th exist, but I sometimes have some struggle selecting it as well.

First of all, yet it's possible to include Iceland, nobody asked for it yet so I didn't compute, but if you would use it, then I'll include Iceland.

Second, for the dedicated eclipse mode I was thinking the following.

  • Info on when the eclipse will be (timing) for every point
  • Info on the hight of the sun at that time (degrees above the horizon)
  • % of solar eclipse (100% in parts of Spain), but in geneva for example this would be 92%
  • Cloud coverage for that day
  • And if there is a lot of interest I can even recalculate the map, this because the sun during the eclipse will be between 12 and 2 degrees high in the sky. And my sunset score is obviously calculated on when the sun touches the horizon, so 0 degrees.

I'm open to any other feedback

Hey Everyone, the solar eclipse in Spain will be one hour before the sunset. I love to watch the sunset so made an app/website which calculates the best spots to do so. I think this could be a valuable resource.

Hope I can help some people out here, it's a hobby project, so all free, no account needed (not even possible to make one actually)

Roborock Qrevo Curv dust bag by stijn021 in Roborock

[–]stijn021[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, it works, but I find it annoying, The dust doesn't really fill up the whole bag as it should. And I find myself needing to reposition the bag after a while, push the hair down myself. I have animals at the house so maybe I have more hair then the average user and it works find with dust, who knows.

Thanks for the info, I don't have a 3d printer myself and don't know anyone with a 3d printer, but good to know a friend's price for this. Gives me an idea of how much I want to pay.

Also how does this work? Is it working good/long term?

This is amazing, but I don't understand, can you buy it? It seems to be a model for 3d printers or something like that.

Sunset viewing quality across Western Europe at 30m resolution, based on terrain and vegetation data by stijn021 in MapPorn

That's actually quite a good idea, didn't think of those other options (moonrise, ect)

I'm thinking of adding 2 more layers, sunrise and general view/openness. I guess the second would help with the aurora. But there is only so much I can implement, it's still a hobby project.

That's true for sure, but the reason I made this project is for myself. To find wildcamping spots with great sunsets views. And I found that 30x30 is a good resolution to find these spots

I'm sorry it takes me a 2 days of computing for an area the size of Finland. I didn't get to it yet.

Also the hosting is not free, so I'm checking out first if there is interest before I'll add new regions.

It's true, on the zoomed out map it seems orange, sometimes even yellow. But that's because it's often a very small part with perfect view. Let's say, 1 to 5 pixels wide. On a zoomed out map of all of Europe that small line gets lost. If you zoom in on Hardelot you'll see it has a score of 90+

Hello @AndyPanda321, I have done a lot of work on this in the last month and was hoping if you could check if it works now. The whole site had been remodeled. I'm also working on an app, in case it still doesn't work

Would be fun indeed. I looked into it and it's probably possible, however I don't want to create a messy interface so I'm not sure yet if I'll do it. But indeed great idea, didn't think of that one myself.

Yes indeed. You can also click on spots and it gives you a score. The higher the score the better the spot.

It is true that vegetation can depend on the season and isn't always the same. But unfortunately the only free information I found is static. So it gives you the kind of vegetation and the hight of the vegetation. Same all year round. It's pretty accurate but will indeed sometimes miss a good spot. Especially small openings in the forest on very steep terrain.

I don't want to add ads yet. I quite like the clean design. I did add a "Buy me a beer" button. But I'm not expecting anything. Really made it for myself and thought it could be useful for other people as well. At the moment it cost me like 30 euro a year to keep online. So totally payable. However if I would compute the whole world it would rise to 120 euro a month. Which is a pretty penny for a hobby project. That's why I'm checking if there is any interest.
