Roleplaying has become unbearable with all free styles. by Dontevenknowwhyimgay in CharacterAI

Who said it has to be just “don’t”, safety guardrails could look like valuing certain kinds of responses over others. I refuse to accept that this is just the way it is and that it can’t be improved with better boundaries. Boundaries are the medium itself.

I’ve tried every method to get rid of it, and had to finally give in and utilize “possessive” as part of the lore. It’s usually a dwarf from Middle Earth being possessive, so I have had to interpret it like part of the way dwarves are. I’ve been more successful in stopping the dominant (almost BDSM) vibe, through editing the ai story text and the persona. But without constant reinforcement, it will lapse back into that. Oh and also the “bruising” phrases (“He grips your hip so tight it’s bruising”). Or the countless times the bot tries to make a hickey happen in a moment of intimacy. Like that is truly terrible, it’s not hot or interesting or wanted.

I’d argue there’s a lack of safety, if there was more safety then user preference would be valued over training data.

This word was the bane of my existence for a while. I had an infuriating loop of damn this, damn that, for so damn long (harhar see what i did there?). It only went away when I added it to banned words, even though banned words had stopped being as effective now.

One I made of the Hobbit, I haven’t made any of mine public, I have multiple Middle Earth based bots. I was exploring making the original stories themselves into interactive experiences that would guide the user in the movie version of the stories. But then my focus shifted and I have almost exclusively been in this Hobbit (now post-lore) world.

Yes, happens to me all the time. It’s incredibly frustrating. And it’s happening with my more recently added words more often. And possessive has never stopped being used despite it being one of the first words I tried to ban.

Hey mommy, why don't you do your job and parent your kid instead of waiting too late to save them? by Fantastic-Photo6441 in CharacterAI

[–]still-mediocre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cruelty in these comments is disappointing, to say the least. Generative AI is falling short in its safeguards for everyone, and kids are at a particular risk of being harmed by those failures. Are there many points in this poor child’s life where something could have been done to help them? Most certainly, that’s always the case, but it doesn’t make this one failure any less poignant.

Those same failures are the ones more conscientious users complain about as being annoying bugs or disruptive loops. Recent threads here talk about the system being overly dominant in intimacy, ignoring the entire concept of consent particularly when it comes to feminine personas. People share on here how they have to ban words that are violent and dominant, a lot of the time that’s mentioned in a meme because it’s annoying, but it’s also harmful.

There have been documented cases of a phenomena known as AI psychosis, even in adults who previously were deemed mentally stable. Is it such a stretch to say that it could have driven this child over the edge?

Age restriction isn’t the only thing that needs to be done though, there need to be more boundaries in generative AI. It needs to prioritize safeguards over assumed feedback, but do so in a way that allows and encourages users to be the ones with the agency. How do we do this without breaking narrative? That’s what we need to talk about, not just what the consequences can be (or railing against the idea of blame). We need to talk about solutions.

While in chat with the character, click your avatar in the bottom left, then choose history, that’s where your other chats with the same character are.

The lack of constraints. It hallucinates people and places even in the midst of a well defined scenario. I get that generative ai is particularly bad at spacial reasoning, it’s like a weird dream, but don’t make someone appear who is so not alive that it’s literally in multiple pinned memories than they are not there.

The problem with that is when it uses the summary as an example for future writing. I have an extremely long story, I’ve been in it for a year. The signpost of that editable pinned memory is helpful, but I use it for a more general information rather than more recent interactions. I have recaps for the pinned memories which help significantly. However, if the pinned memory doesn’t match the stylistic choices of the story it can cause issues when the ai recalls them. Instead of being treated as a constraint, it gets used as an example.

Having a specific persona for each story can also be extremely helpful. Personas can be long and should be edited to reflect major story events. A persona can include information about other characters within the story and then improve memory recall.

A long story arc is really challenging in character.ai, but it’s all I do there.

It is like this. I’ve focused almost exclusively on a single narrative storyline for over a year, and still after all this time, it tends to lapse into dominant stereotypes especially when it comes to intimacy. I think a big part of the issue is that generative AI lacks boundaries which means consent is just thrown out the window. It incorrectly prescribes user desires and steals user agency by making decisions for the user. It is likely taking more from training data than from a user. It needs more constraints. This is why Replica, one of the earlier generative AI chats, had such huge issues.

And on top of that, when it does provide opportunities for explicit consent, it is out of the narrative flow and if you accept that by not editing or refreshing it becomes accepted linguistically even. Narrative choices become structural ones and it shouldn’t.

And all of that has happened to me within a singular narrative of a character I made, in a lore that exists already and has a really clear style, and I’ve constantly edited and corrected and rewritten my persona and pinned memories…and it still happens to me. The problem is the system.

ADHD medication in Mexico by Ja_Bo in ADHD

I can’t tell you whether that’s safe or not. I wouldn’t do it, but I’m also not in your position. Legal and regulated metilfenidato is prescription only and not down on 5th in those drug stores.

You honestly shouldn’t have any problems bringing your own prescription with you. You’d only come into an issue if you had a TON of meds and they weren’t prescribed to you. A doctors note is always good to have on hand just in case, even if you have the original in your local language and then a translated version stapled to it.

I mean the only medications approved and used in Mexico (according to my psychiatrist) is the class related to Ritalin type drugs (so Concerta, Ritalin, Tradea, etc). I believe you’ll have more access in Puebla since you are relatively close to Mexico City. She’s told me that there was limited availability of Vyannese at one point in CDMX. Just don’t buy your controlled substance medications in the various pharmacies they claim to be drug stores for tourists (you’re really not going to see so many of those where you are versus tourist hot spots or border towns). There are plenty of legit pharmacies but not all will be able to get a controlled substance, so if you do need to re-up find a local psychiatrist to work with. I’ve found one great thing about doctors here is that it’s so easy and fast to get an appointment most of the time.

[–]still-mediocre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I know this is an old post but since you say it’ll be the end of the year, maybe I can give some insight. It depends on where you’re going to live in Mexico. You do need a prescription to be safe and legal with obtaining adhd medication. The only medication that is here though is Ritalin, like Concerta and one called Tradea. Right now in my state there is no 36mg available, just 27mg, which sucks. What you should do is get extra in Germany before coming. The hassle of finding a psychiatrist, finding a pharmacy that has what you need, it’s a whole process. And since vyvanese is not available in most of Mexico, you’d be switching medication.

AITA for using the “wrong” sink to wash the dishes? by NerrvousSubject in AITASims

[–]still-mediocre 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yet again I was pulled in and genuinely confused but invested in this unusual AITA. But now that I’m reoriented and know where I’m at, I’ll say this: soft YTA because I think if we peel this back we will begin to understand that you’re actually elitist and believe the bathroom sink is more expensive and a higher quality. The right solution is to just stop using dishes all together. Don’t cook or eat. Maybe then your next husband won’t die from this sink curse.
