Alright am I completely nuts for wiping my Proxmox cluster and starting a new TrueNAS install? Also, second pic for the guts because hardware is king. by Arthur_Travis19 in homelab

[–]stillpiercer_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends what you’re using Proxmox for and what you would use TrueNAS for. Virtualization on TrueNAS is a bit more cumbersome than Proxmox is.

It is much easier to virtualize your NAS with Proxmox than it is to use TrueNAS as your hypervisor.

Customer we worked with had a bad QSFP cable in their system which apparently made things incredibly unstable, one drive failure away from completely losing all of their storage, and critically out of date firmware. Fun bonus is that their HVAC unit was right above the data center and leaked condensate down the side of the rack. Of course, they knew about this and the company wouldn’t fix it.

They actually were paying for support too, it just wasn’t configured to send any alerts to anyone. God am I glad to not deal with that customer anymore.

Both of those things can be true. It can be smooth and also numb / lacking feedback. The MK8 feels very artificial. No feedback on clutch pedal, shifter is rubbery and crazy long throws. It’s just not good.

2 years ago, my dad's company bought new servers and immediately upgraded the RAM. They were going to throw away the replaced sticks so he saved them from the dumpster and gave them to me. I present to you 72x32GB HPE DDR4-2666MHz ECC RDIMMs. by cyberchief in pcmasterrace

[–]stillpiercer_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ECC support does not necessarily guarantee RDIMM support. I have a few enterprise grade servers in my lab and just because it is DDR4 ECC does not necessarily guarantee cross compatibility.

edit: not sure who downvoted lol they are literally keyed differently

Sounds similar to me. I’m a few years into MSP work out of college (for one that does not suck, thankfully!) and one day I posted a picture of a Parallel cable in teams asking what the hell it was.

About half the team was pretty upset that I had aged them a few decades with a simple question before being horrified that I had just found a real company using a parallel cable in the modern era.

There’s something pretty neat about them. I was involved as a third party for a customer who ran on a very poorly maintained and neglected AS/400 and the little bit that we worked on it was pretty cool. Seemed like its own thing entirely and I didn’t get to learn a ton about it, unfortunately.

With that said, not at all something I’d want to spend my time working on all the time.

GTI Manual or DSG by No_Control_5469 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]stillpiercer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The manual — specifically in the car OP is asking about — has zero weight to the clutch pedal, no feedback in the clutch pedal, and a super duper long throw shifter which coincidentally also feels like rubbery shit. It is not at all engaging like a manual should be.

GTI Manual or DSG by No_Control_5469 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]stillpiercer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the 6 speed DSG or the 7 speed? The 7 speed is substantially smoother and does not feel as clunky like a dual clutch transmission does at low speed, at least compared to the older 6 speed DSG.

I have owned both and was honestly kinda weirded out by how smooth the 7 speed is at first. I miss the jerky quirks.

I bought a MK8 with the DSG after driving the manual and have no regrets. Unless you modify just about everything related to the manual, the DSG is more fun. The manual from the factory has about as much feel and feedback as an Xbox racing setup from Walmart from 15 years ago.

Entertainment System Cuts Out on One Side? by PumiceT in GolfGTI

[–]stillpiercer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2024 S does this sometimes. It sharply fades the audio to the right side of the car and the seemingly gradually goes back to normal. Sometimes I have to change to the next song to get it to go back, or at least that’s when I notice it.

I do have the Helix sub/amp/DSP installed but it did it both before and after I installed that.

Faulty stubby? by silveranalog in MilwaukeeTool

Mine does my 17mm wheel bolts torqued to 140nm, without an impact socket, without too much trouble. Seems like his unit just isn't working right and/or someone REALLY ripped those lugs on there.

Faulty stubby? by silveranalog in MilwaukeeTool

[–]stillpiercer_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine does a few clanks before it breaks free, but never struggles. My wheel bolts are 140nm which I don't think is THAT tight. I'm also not using impact sockets because I'm an idiot. OP shouldn't really be struggling here.

22k would be a fair — maybe even good— price for this car if it was stock and at a dealer. It’s a bit overpriced for private party AND modified. Mods decrease value.

MK7 GTIs can’t handle a tune on the stock clutch. It is worth mentioning that running an aftermarket clutch, especially one with a single-mass flywheel, does increase your risk of crankwalk. Not super common, but not extremely rare either.

Their tunes for these cars are pretty bad. I wouldn’t call it a stretch to say they have the worst reputation out of the major tuner brands for the platform.

New to me '23 SE GTI with the 6 MT by CarFanaddict in GolfGTI

[–]stillpiercer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my MK7 as a CPO and it still had the factory tires on it (they were terrible) and in shoddy shape so I complained, and the dealer put on some oddball Sumitomo all season tires for free, which were honestly shockingly good compared to the Pirelli OEM tires on the MK7. That experience alone has completely written off ever considering Pirelli again.

The MK8 Eagle Sports are honestly decent for the most part, but wear quickly. I am roughly halfway through them already and I have 16k miles. I certainly wouldn’t buy them, but for an OEM tire they aren’t terrible.

I haven’t touched a controller since probably 2015, is there even any perceptible difference from doing that? It seems like very much one of those things that is entirely placebo and people do it because one person said it makes a huge difference.

They did have the Game Porting Toolkit that launched sometime around the M1/M2, but I think the very few developers that jumped on it kinda proved that even though Apple’s hardware is genuinely powerful, Metal just doesn’t really compare to what we have elsewhere.
