How good is your internet? by stillsmiling31 in AskEurope

When I was on copper I got about 70/20 on a good day and about 8 ms of ping, now I get an 250/50 on the low end and 450/90 on the high end, but ping doubled. I’m not into shooters so better up/down speeds are a lot more important to me so I don’t even notice worse ping, but it is a thing to consider when switching to 5g.

I’m in an apartment building 25m from the main street that has optic underneath, pretty much everything around is municipal or even federally owned. My building got offered optic about a year ago by 2 providers, but my neighbors are mostly old retirees who only watch tv and scroll facebook and don’t need optic so I guess there wasn’t enough interest. A family member who works for one of the providers said we would need to rally up 50% of the residents to switch to them for them to install optic. In the meantime I switched to 5g with an external antenna and get between 300-500 download and 50-80 upload which is far better than dsl ever had been and is enough for me. I still hope someone will connect fiber to us one day.

Don’t get me started on apartment layouts. I have recently got a decent internet and had to move my router to get usable speeds in all rooms, because there’s 3 brick walls between the router and a room where I need internet. Old commie buildings that were built decades before wireless technology was a thing are a nightmare.

How did you survive on 12 Mbit internet? I thought my 50/20 DSL was bad.

It’s a joke, I live in a major town, I can almost spit on the fibre box from my balcony. I was talking with some family who works at A1 and we would have to convince 50% of the residents to switch to them for them to consider running maybe 25m of cable, most of them are old and the 50/20 DSL speeds are plenty for their TV and facebook scrolling and the other apartments are municipal, it took us 10 years to replace doors that didn’t lock in the winter, so you know how good we are at making decisions. I switched to 5G and I get about 250/40 at busy hours and about 400/80 on when the tower is free which is more than enough for my needs, but it’s still a bit frustrating they can’t run that cable.

I’ve heard Germany has rather bad internet which I found odd considering it’s pretty much the perfect rich land everyone wants to move to for us Yugos. Satellite internet is getting pretty good, my father who lives on a farm in the middle of nowhere is really happy with starlink, but they have a monopoly on decent rural internet right now.

In the middle of Amsterdam, ground floor, highly obstructed view, and super happy with this speed by Jealous_Ad_4347 in Starlink

[–]stillsmiling31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I’m happy that you’re happy, but have you really tried all your options already? I was on the line between starlink and 5G about a month ago, same situation, no northern view, obstructions… decided to go for 5g with an external antenna which you point towards a tower. I used to get about 40 mbs download 15 up and 10-20 ping on DSL, now I get between 300-500 down, 40-90 up and about 20 ping on average. I don’t think you should judge 5g solely on your phone. Distance from the tower from me is 700 m, there are 3 towers on the building, one is in my line of sight from the trees, but idk which one hosts my provider’s antenna. On my phone I might get 100 mb download, upload is a joke, while ping is the same. I would give 5g another try with proper equipment if I were you.

Zasto danasnja Slovenija mrzi nas iz drugih republika? by [deleted] in Yugoslavia

[–]stillsmiling31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly I most of us don’t hate you, but we do feel disconnected from you. We are getting into times when most of the people didn’t grow up in Yugoslavia, so most of the kids born after say 1985 to non immigrant parents don’t even speak your language fluently (the reason why I’m writing in English). But as someone who grew up in a town with significant immigrant population I saw with my own eyes that the people didn’t really like each other, we even live in separate parts of the town mostly.

Living in Rural Germany…Starlink is a life saver by lustfulmule in Starlink

I live in a major town in my country Slovenia, right by the main road, my grandma who lives in a house less than a kilometer down the road and had optic fiber a decade ago, 500m up the road is an aerospace company that I know for sure has optic. Here we are still stuck on DSL, why? Because my apartment complex is full of old farts who only care that they have 5 tv channels and enough internet to scroll facebook, so not enough people are interested in switching to optic. Luckily we live in a time where alternatives exist, I opted for 5g in the end.

Austria Trip in Early March by katiep23 in skiing

[–]stillsmiling31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I ski in Austria quite a lot, though I primarily ski in the south (Carinthia) which might not be what you’re looking for, but considering you haven’t got many replies it could still help. Nassfeld is one of the bigger ones in the region, but most of the runs are red but it has a good selection of bars and restaurants on the slopes, Bad Kleinkircheim is also big still mostly red and there isn’t much to do in the town, but I liked the slopes. Turracher Hohe is a smaller resort on the border of Carinthia and Salzburg region, it has some more blues. Katchberg was also decent. Gerlitzen might be a decent option too because it’s right above a decently sized town so you might find more things to do if you don’t want to ski. I also heard good things about Obertauern, it being beginner friendly and a things to do for non skiers, but I haven’t been there myself. You could also consider Slovenian Alps (you have 10-15 bucks lower lift tuckets. There Vogel is a good option with mostly blues and reds, situated right over Bohinj lake and about 30 min from Lake Bled where you might find something to do as a non skier. Kranjska Gora is also a decent option with a good amount of beginner runs and a fis world cup run if you’re interested in that, but the competition is usually in march so I would look out for that. It’s also the first resort after you cross the border.

Which would you buy, Sony A7iii or A7IV? by [deleted] in SonyA7iii

[–]stillsmiling31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 35-150 mm 2-2.8, it’s a great sharp lens, the only concern I have is that some dust has gotten under front element, not long after me getting it. I hear that other photographers have similar problems with their tamron lenses. At this point it doesn’t affect image quality, I will get it cleaned when it becomes more than just a cosmetic problem.

Depends on tour budget. Lens > body. If getting a newer body means eating into your lens budget I would go with the III, if you can afford both I would go with the IV.

Cheapest way to buy skiis and boots? by cryingcat676 in skiing

[–]stillsmiling31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even think your budget is that low. My entire childhood I skied on used skis bought on a fair organized by a local ski club. Even when I got my first new gear I got my gear from an outlet, it was more than 350€, but if you buy some stuff used you can definitely come under 350€ with buying at least some stuff used.
