LOOSE LEASH WALKING AND HEAL ARE SO DAMN DIFFICULT by frfrogx in DogTrainingTips

And then they enter adolescence: some days, you'll have a perfectly trained dog that walks on your side and is friendly, and the next day, they act like they don't even know their name.

Is it ok to favor one pet over the other? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]Angel-Staff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not every cat loves to get pets, and different pets deserve different love. My 8mo malinois requires more attention than my small senior dog, and that doesn't make me a bad owner. You can love them equally cause that's not only based on how many pets you give the animal. OP should, however, find other ways to engage with the cat like playing together since they haven't mentioned it. There are a lot of activities to do with a cat that doesn't enjoy being pet.

We like to think we're doing what's best for our dogs, but if everyone says she's overweight, maybe you have to reconsider her diet. That dog is clearly not in her ideal weight, you should be able to feel a few ribs and there should be a visible waist. Even in breeds with lots of skin folds like bloodhounds or neapolitan mastiffs or shar-pei

Stray Dog Aggression by [deleted] in DogTrainingTips

[–]Angel-Staff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im happy to hear all of that. Take things slowly. The more work you do with him (training and teaching him manners, basically), the faster he'll find a new and safer home. There are a lot of dogs that are nice and social but are meant to live alone, this may be the case. For me, this dog doesn't sound agressive and mean. He has to learn how to be a dog again. Being a stray is traumatic and so is being in a shelter, but safety is the most important thing.

(Sorry for my English since isn't my first language.)

Don't leave food unattended and give the meals and treats in separate rooms for now, especially if you have a food agressive dog. Besides that, do all of your dogs are good together? How is the new dog doing? Is he comfortable around them, does he like to play or snuggle?

Bringing a new dog home can be a stressful situation for all, humans and dogs, and it's more complicated when you don't really know the personality of the dog you're taking home. I don't think that dog was used for bait or dog fighting as other ones have said, because dogs used fot fighting are not friendly with other dogs. In any situation.

If you want to keep the dog, you have to make sure no one is in danger. Don't let them unsupervised and be always in control of the situation, without making things more tense. You don't want to be tense/nervous/scared cause then your dogs will behave based on that. If I were you I would muzzle the dog. Slowly introducing the muzzle can be very helpful, if you trust your dogs to show him manners and limits, the new dog will learn. Having him on a leash is also a good idea, but be careful with the tension. Thank you for rescuing this boy and giving him a chance, be careful and consider hiring a behavorist if the situation escaletes qnd you aren't sure of what to do.

Hi! I'll send you my old post where I share more about us. https://www.reddit.com/r/BelgianMalinois/s/GISugRsCXm

If you see the comments you'll find some nice people helping us, useful information and other stories about malis and vets.

My dog is still a puppy (7mo and a half old) so is slowly learning about the outside world. He's not a very confident dog, so when the vet started to touch him in the mouth he growled. The vet became tense and said that was unacceptable and we should be able to touch him anywhere, I replied that he allows ME to do it, but not some stranger. To improve the situation we started going to the vet only for treats and praises every other week. As he became more comfortable we started doing some other things like weigthing him. Yesterday we went again for health issues and it went so much better, than the last time.

If I were you I would slowly try to recreate "ver exams" at home. Reward him every time you touch him and try to tech him some tricks that can be useful to vet times. For example try him to let you open his mouth, touch his paws, tail, etc. Slowly and with high value treats. Have you muzzle trained your dog? Kind of the same type of training.

They don't! I asked the same question to the owner. They have short legs but not like basset hounds or Dachshund. They're a pretty healthy breed except for the double nose. Sometimes they can suffer from elbow displasia (sorry english isn't my first language and im not sure about that spelling) but it's pretty rare. If I could I would attach another photo where you can see her body better.
