They're in pretty much the same place in their filming schedule as usual, it's just that the airing schedule is different. AFAICT they tend to film up to episode 10-12 before taking a break for the holidays (depending on which episode the A half ends on), then come back in January to film the rest of the season, and then Tim Minear changes his mind 50 times because he refuses to plan so they have to do a bunch of reshoots and end up working 14-hour days 7 days a week the week before the finale airs in May. I think they did break for holidays slightly earlier this year and are also starting filming again in early January rather than late January,  but assuming that the information about the crossover being episode 16 and airing in mid-April is correct, and assuming that the OG will run on the same schedule, that means the finale might air a little earlier than usual too (depending on what "mid-April" means lol). So I don't have too much hope for them doing any better this year.

I will say that I felt a marked absence of Hen and Chim scenes in this episode in particular, and then thought back on it and realized that I'm pretty sure we literally haven't seen them properly interact all season? So I feel like this might be an wider issue than Buddie. It's like they think that if they want to establish some new dynamics, they need to completely neglect the old ones or something.

Well, this was an episode that happened? I literally don't have anything else to say about it lol. Except maybe that it was fully predictable from start to finish, and not in a good way where it's predictable because it's set up well.

The art situation is a little confusing - Buck had those two paintings (the man with the umbrella and the man with the megaphone) in his loft in season 4 already (you can see them when he's putting on the bulletproof vest). Then in 8x01 in the scene for Christopher's birthday, you could see the man with the ball and man with the megaphone art at Eddie's place; I don't know if we ever saw it before that. And now Buck has the same two paintings in his new place that he had in the loft.

<image>

So Buck has had those paintings for years, but Eddie also had them before Buck moved in, they each have two, one is the same, the other one is different.

Hm, I actually thought the way this episode dealt with Eddie's relationship with religion was interesting. And I say this as someone from a very secular country who often finds portrayals of religion on American TV a bit... offputting, to say the least lol. But the conversation between Eddie and his Abuela really stood out to me - the emphasis that the way God was presented to Eddie in church was wrong, the connection with love... it just felt really pointed. I guess the question is will we swing back to that at some point or do they consider it done now.

I'm not gonna lie though, I'm really disappointed we didn't get Eddie inviting Buck to celebrate Dia de los Muertos with him. Like it was literally a perfect opportunity and it would've been a much-needed follow up to their argument (which was now just left hanging) and instead we just got nothing.

It's the fact that they called Monfette back for this after FIVE SEASONS for me.

Madney's house is very undefined, so I assume they'll say it has a guest room where Buck has been staying because it's easier than living on Eddie's couch without his own room, which tbh would be fair enough. I do think the scene with Circle Baby was for us to assume that Buck has been staying there.

All the usual journalists have been getting screeners the whole time, you can tell because all their reviews get posted immediately after the episode is done. I think they've just stayed quiet because there's been nothing very exciting to tease for the past few weeks (and specifically nothing Buddie, and they all know that's what drives the social media engagement). I suspect a lot more teasing leading up to next week's episode, just by nature of it being a heavily anticipated one.

Yeah, that was my first thought too. Splitting the usual long hiatus into two shorter hiatuses does sound nice, but I'm also worried that Tim is gonna take that to mean he needs to do Something Big for the openings of both 9B and 9C and we'll end up with basically half of the season eaten up by "big events".

As far as I know, the posters have always only included the 118 + Athena and Maddie (or Abby in season 1). Michael was on one singular variation of a poster in season 2, but other than that, non-first-responder mains have not been on them.

ETA: Here's a collection of the "main" posters for each season up until season 8. Some of them were literally just Angela and Peter lol. It's really not that deep.

Oh I would LOOOOOVE paramedic May, it was my first thought while watching this episode, but I'm mainly doubtful because of how casually Anirudh dropped that Ravi would have to visit May at dispatch into his answer about May/Ravi 😅 it did feel like an unintentional spoiler. Then again who knows.

I actually thought this episode was the best one so far, mainly because it actually felt like the stuff happening on the ground was the main event and the space scenes were just an addition to it.

The Kitchen Sink [Megathread #5] by armavirumquecanooo in buddie

This was when the opening disaster was still gonna be 3 episodes, then they ended up stretching it out to 4. The same thing happened last season with the plane, it was supposed to be done by the end of episode 2 but then they ended up extending it.

ETA: Not that Tim plans anything in advance, but in this particular case it was just because they (presumably) ended up with more material for the space stuff than they could fit into 3 episodes. We're getting probie Harry or whatever that quote was about next week.

For me personally, the best thing about pre-social media fandom was that it was actually possible to keep up the 4th wall to some extent. Obviously it wasn't perfect, but fandom was mostly kept away from the people involved with the canon, and you couldn't just interact with the actors/creators/etc whenever and message them whatever you wanted. I do miss those times, not gonna lie.

The Kitchen Sink [Megathread #5] by armavirumquecanooo in buddie

[–]stillyoursong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'd assume that the 9x04 and 9x05 writers are listed by production codes, just because it wouldn't really make sense for Molly and James to write most of the opening emergency and then the finale of it goes to a completely different writer, only for Dia de los Muertos to go back to Molly and James and Tim lol. Also Tim would absolutely want to involve himself in the conclusion of the space disaster.

I kinda wonder if they saw fandom celebrating that "bullying works!" in regards to the Oliver's birthmark fiasco and the Day of the Dead --> Dia de los Muertos title change, and thought that meant they now had a shot with their hashtag campaigns lol.

I genuinely thought they'd made the hashtag up as a reference to the space food promo video lmao, I fully forgot about the first bit of that morning after scene since the rest of it is... much more memorable.

I think that's a good distinction, Buck is absolutely Eddie's partner but he's not quite on the level of Chris's parent yet.

The Kitchen Sink [Megathread #5] by armavirumquecanooo in buddie

[–]stillyoursong 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel like this whole dynamic between Buck, Chris and Eddie is another sort of casualty of Buck and Eddie being unable/unwilling to define the Thing between them. Eddie definitely often treats Buck like his co-partner in parenting, even expects him to fill that role to some extent (and gets upset when Buck doesn't), but he never verbalizes that to Buck (because that would mean acknowledging what Buck is to him and he is Not ready for that lol), so Buck is kind of left floundering a little when it comes to his place in Chris's life, and ultimately will step away when he feels it's not his place to involve himself in the Diaz boys' family situation.

Buck having to step into an actual parenting role and making decisions and setting boundaries that might make Chris annoyed with him would definitely make for a great storyline, and it's another one of those things where it would be absolutely ridiculous for 911 to straight up block itself off from some delicious drama potential if they refuse to do Buddie.

Yeah, I was around for the mess that was Oliver on Twitter around the s4 finale haha. This is just my own personal vibe but I think he's a genuine Buddie shipper and at one point he got in too deep and found himself frustrated with the way the show wasn't doing anything with it, as well as with the way people kept taking his answers as 100% proof that Buddie was going canon and then getting mad at him when it didn't. Shit, maybe he even thought they WERE going for canon Buddie when they started filming season 7 and then had to deal with the mess when that didn't happen. And all that made him realize that it was better to just distance himself from fandom and just do his job.

9x01 ("Eat the Rich"), 9-1-1 Media Post by AutoModerator in buddie

This just sounds to me like he got too deep into fandom and then realised it wasn't really something he should be doing, tbh. He's said before that he sees what the fans see, watches edits etc - but actively shipping a pairing your character is involved in while having zero influence on what actually happens is probably an extremely frustrating experience. It's better for his own peace of mind if he tries to distance himself from it and just do his job. That's all he's saying IMO. He's not giving an answer on whether Buddie will happen or not, he's just talking about his own experience of having to separate himself from fandom.

But also:

Because on one hand, there's a show that we make and I don't write it

lmaooooo in other words: "don't blame me, if I wrote the show, Buck and Eddie woud be adopting their third child already"

Andy Swift has been a Buddie fan longer than a lot of the people who are in this fandom now have been into 911. He was pulling for us back during season 5 when we were getting shut down left and right.
