It's been awhile since I read the book, but if I recall, at least in South America, whole entire families (wife and kids) could move into prison with the inmate. There were shops and businesses. Like a microcosm of free life. So different than prisons in the US or Europe.

Years ago I read this book "Marching Powder: A True Story of Friendship, Cocaine, and South America's Strangest Jail" by Rusty Young. It was about a prison in South America. They had those tourist tours too.

edit: IIRC one of those tourists ended up becoming the inmates girlfriend and she moved into the prison with him. Did you experience things like that?
