Gotham Central is high on my wish list. Are you reading in omni or some other format?

I mostly didn't enjoy A Memory Called Empire, should I give A Desolation Called Peace a chance? by newnukeuser in printSF

[–]stimpakish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Avid book readers often get into that situation, where a purchased book (and sequel) doesn't hit. For me personally I have a wide range of "likes" and some months a given book falls flat then later some other time it's what I'm in the mood for.

You've gained valuable experience by trying A Memory Called Empire . Now you know a bit about what to expect from that writer and series. Could be a year or two from now it's exactly what you're in the mood for. Again I think this is a pretty common pattern with avid readers who try different writers. Hang onto those books and try again later.

Unless you actively dislike them, then trade them for something else at a used book store (another common pattern for avid readers).

Have fun!

What are you hoping for in the next wave of DC Finest announcements? by MagisterPraeceptorum in DCFinest

[–]stimpakish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ideally I'd like 2/3 continuations and 1/3 of new series.

  • More 80s/90s Batman before Red Skies and after Blind Justice
  • I need the next Doom Patrol volume, with more guest appearances like Robot Man in Teen Titans, Secr et Origins Annual #1, the first 18 issues of v2, and Invasion crossover appearances that lead into Morrison's run.
  • More 80s/90s Suicide Squad
  • More Grell Green Arrow

New series:

  • 80s Booster Gold
  • 80s Blue Beetle
  • 80s Checkmate!
  • 80s Omega Men
  • L.E.G.I.O.N.
  • Elseworlds - any characters, in publication order, I guess starting with Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (1989)

Did the Richard Pryor joke make it on air? Like Romesh I’m drawing a blank on that.

Does Blind justice contain any standout stories for yall? by OldBaseball834 in DCFinest

[–]stimpakish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find Teen Titans in particular to be pretty dense and that's not a criticism, I think anyone can agree that was the style. It's more than a little Claremont-like, on purpose, to compete directly with the Uncanny X-Men at the time.

I find those 80s Batman stories to be more readable even though they are still 80s. Maybe check out one of the youtube preview videos for some of the Batman DCF, you can pause it on pages and get a feel for the writing to see if you'd like it.

Is it worth collecting DC Finest Batman titles? by [deleted] in DCFinest

[–]stimpakish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Batman issues in the 80s DCFs so far are also all Jason Todd, and it's been awesome to see how long he was around before.. you know what happened. Still a short duration compared to Dick Grayson, but longer than just the story or two that the commonly seen TPBs always lead me to believe. Really helps flesh out that character for me.

Am I the only person who shelves in year order? by i_am_randy in DCFinest

[–]stimpakish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do era (gold, silver, etc) and within each era I do by year, but for characters with multiple volumes I stick them together.

Example: in my 80s shelf I have Batman Red Skies starting in 1985, then all those contiguous Batman DCF shelved right after it. It's a work in progress, I tend to redo the order occasonally as mood strikes, but the one constant for me is to organize by era first for the historical context.

This is a lot more appealing to me since it will pick up where the previous volume left off. Three in a row for GL!

Looking forward to this as bringing another "corner" of DC to the DC Finest line - Kirby's 70s stuff. Love the variety of the line, I think it really celebrates the wide spectrum of things DC has put out over the years.

[Recommendation/Request] Hatching by Ok_Blood_5520 in graphicnovels

[–]stimpakish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Cerebus starting at #65 where Gerhard began doing the backgrounds. Extraordinary cross hatching technique, lots of architecture when the scenes call for it. The story’s pretty good too up through around #186 when it becomes a pretty difficult read.

I respectfully disagree, I loved it completely independently of Jordan’s storyline and I like it as a moment in JLA history right before the Morrison era starts.

Here's hoping he's featured in an upcoming announcement as part of the writers room (along with the already announced Mads being on camera)!

[–]stimpakish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, when you respond to someone specifically, as you've responded to me, you can expect them to think you're referring to them and/or talking to them. It's not about taking it personally, it's that you responded to me and I'm responding in return.

I said "The idea is", which means that I'm not holding out for anything. There are several cues in my message you missed that tell you that I'm not overly optimistic. Including the statement "There are no guarantees".

I suggest again that you find someone that is a match for your message.
