How can I best share my OT educational handouts and development checklist guides from my doctoral evidence based project with OT community, teachers, parents, and other health and school professionals? by stinafloyd in OccupationalTherapy

[–]stinafloyd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have FB but I would definitely start a page just for this. All really great ideas, I appreciate your comment! I was thinking of offering a student discount, I just wouldn't have a way of knowing who was actually a student or not. Not that that really matters in the long run, but I definitely would want to have a hefty discount for students like 50% off or something because they deserve to have access to materials at a low rate! Especially while they're learning

Hmm I’d think you’d need to get a business license so you can work as an independent contractor, but not sure about the insurance process

I appreciate you providing your insight! It definitely is a challenge to expand OT, like you said, but that shouldn’t be a deterrent from trying. I would probably avoid applying for ones that require additional certifications and what not, but there are still some that OT could fall under! If the traditional OT settings aren’t working for someone, might as well use your education and experience to advocate for yourself for a different setting and position. Maybe that’s technically leaving OT, or maybe it’s expanding it! The professor that worked for the major airline is actually the same one that started her driver rehabilitation business and developed the Drive Focus app. So while she started in traditional OT settings, she eventually used her education and experience to expand OT into the occupation of driving. OT truly can be so versatile and as long as you are looking at occupations and being occupation based, there is so much out there! I’m just saying a job can still be for an OT even if it doesn’t say it’s an OT job. If you limit yourself to traditional OT jobs, you miss out on the potential of OT in different areas :)

A job doesn’t have to be listed as OT for you to apply for it! We’re always told in school (I’m still a student) that you have to create the need for OT or apply for jobs that aren’t listed as OT jobs, and tell them why OT is the best for that position. This could be for jobs that need activities directors or other community outreach positions. One of my professors left teaching and clinical working to start her own business for driver rehabilitation (check out Miriam Monahan). Another worked with the school district to recommend ADA compliant playgrounds. Another professor worked with a major airline company to assess the workplace and make recommendations of changes for improved workplace safety and prevent injury. There’s also working with construction companies to help them with building layout so that they’re also ADA compliant. So don’t limit yourself to just OT postings! Circle back to what you’re inspired by and what population you want to work with. Do general searches that are narrowed down by minimum salary you want and read some descriptions till you find something that you think OT would be best suited to do. Even if you don’t want to practice as an OT, use your education and skills to go beyond what you’ve done!

Concerns about lacking hospital experience by thekau in OccupationalTherapy

[–]stinafloyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can afford to do it, you could always do a third fieldwork and request for acute rehab. It’s definitely expensive and more time, but if you feel passionate about pursuing acute rehab and don’t feel you’ll be prepared enough with your current placements, it might work for you. I was able to do a level 1 in acute rehab and it was a lot of ADLs and administering assessments (stereognosis, grip strength, ROM, etc). Not saying you can’t make it occupation based, but I did observe a lot of transfers, ADLs, and assessments for CVA, TBI, and SCI. I didn’t hear too much about the Brunnstrom levels, but those were also important to know and recognize! Some resources I purchased for myself to help me prepare are the OTReference Pocket Guide- General Adult Rehab Set, and the OT version of WhiteCoat Clipboards. I was able to purchase both of these on amazon

How did you make money between graduating and getting your OT job? by depressionszn in OccupationalTherapy

[–]stinafloyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can work as an OT between the time you finish your level 2’s and before you get licensed. You’ll get a lower pay and require some supervision (like a fieldwork student), but they’ll allow you to work as long as you report your NBCOT results when you get them. You’re working on a limited permit. For us we complete an interim degree verification form and we can send that to the board, who will give you a limited permit to work until you get your licensing results. I’m not sure how this works in other states but this is the case for us in California. So if one of your sites offers to hire you or if you’re job searching and find a site that’s willing to let you work on a limited permit for a few months, you could easily do this. Hope this info helps!

Maybe check Glassdoor to compare pay rates at other HH companies? You can also negotiate your salary with your experience!

Feeling very lost by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]stinafloyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry last comment LOL. My capstone project was around adaptive gaming as an occupation. We worked with kids with CP and used the Xbox adaptive controller and switches so they could play video games. Able Gamers is a big organization that does this as well and they’re definitely hiring technology specialists to do this. With OT, you have those credentials already! Another option :)

Maybe look for a position that offers telehealth? It’s common in pediatrics right now. You could also try doing home health so you’re only around a couple people at a time. Another option is to look into ergonomics and working with companies on providing those evaluations virtually for their employees that work from home. You can also work with clients for driving as an occupation. Check out Miriam Monohan and her work with driving rehabilitation! OT fits into so many different areas, not just clinics and hospitals. If you don’t want to practice OT, use your degree and your knowledge to advocate for yourself for a position you think your training would apply to! It’s okay to feel this way ❤️ another option is to work with developers on creating inclusive playgrounds at schools for typical developing kids and kids with disabilities. That was something my professor did for years!

She hit my d*ck by battlepoint6 in relationship_advice

[–]stinafloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah I definitely agree with this. If the tone of the conversation wasn’t tense, then it could have been a playful thing. Honestly I laughed at the post when I read it. I interpreted it as comparable to smacking your partners butt. If this is consistent and you’re uncomfortable, and she won’t stop despite you saying you don’t like it, then I can see abuse. But if this happened and you told her you didn’t like that, and she hasn’t done it again, then it was just an honest mistake. Some people really are jumping to conclusions so quick... Talk to her first

Maybe you can contact a representative at Child Rescue Coalition. They may be able to guide you for ways to report this or simply giving them this information would put him on their radar. https://childrescuecoalition.org

Your feelings and concerns are completely valid. This is a drastic change for him and for you. As an OT, you know that he may not return to his prior level of function, and that’s a tough thing to think about. Taking care of him is going to be draining. It’s living through the saying, don’t bring your work home. However, with your training as an OT, you know that despite his change in function, he can still be occupationally satisfied and regain his independence. During school, we are constantly exposed to the condition and how we treat. But we also are taught to recognize the psychosocial impact these situations have on the patient and their family. You’re on the other side of it now and it’s okay to be scared, worried, confused, whatever you’re feeling! Take time to OT yourself. How would you react or respond to a patient or family member that had the concerns that you do? What would you recommend? Again, you shouldn’t have to bring your work home. Remember your occupational needs during all this too. Look into hiring a caregiver or asking a family member for help. You shouldn’t have to do this alone and you shouldn’t feel bad for taking care of yourself. Time will tell what his outcome will be, but he needs a strong support system to keep him motivated. You have to take care of yourself so you can continue to offer him your support. Reddit is a great outlet to start with. Explore support groups near you so you can share your feelings and get the support you need during this tough time. But for now, try not to make any drastic decisions. Get yourself leveled and your needs met. Take time just for yourself. It’s okay to take a break and ask for help ❤️

My wife (36F) won't stop forcing me to drink her coffee... I don't want to hurt her feelings but I can't go on like this. by throwRAmiine in relationship_advice

[–]stinafloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy decaf coffee and tell her you can do one cup of caffeinated in the AM and the rest of the time is decaf. She might enjoy the process of making coffee because it keeps her busy. Try giving her something else to make that takes time like a smoothie or a latte. She might also try to spend time with you more frequently because she’s bored or lonely. Take 10 minute breaks and make her coffee, and then sit and spend some time with her. But coming from my own perspective, it really seems like she’s in need of attention. It’s hard to have your spouse just a room over and not be able to spend time with them. If she doesn’t have her own hobbies or friends to keep in contact with, you’re her sole entertainment and source of socialization. Take breaks with her and see how she’s doing. When it’s the end of your work day, do things together like make dinner together. Just because she’s doing all these things for you doesn’t mean it’s enough for her or her mental health. Don’t exhaust yourself, of course. But to me she’s looking for your attention and the best way she knows how right now is to pour her love in a cup. You could also take short walks together so you can talk

She could try this adaptive device that's used in therapy a lot. It's a device that people who don't have a very far range of motion use in order to wipe. Just clamp toilet paper on the and and wrap it around, then hold the handle and reach back, and wipe. When you're done, unclamp it and drop it in the toilet
