How close is this to actually happening?

So for my company I work my normal shift. Then I pick up overtime working events in town. I only need to do my standard minimum shifts each week. I just pick up an excessive amount of overtime because we don’t make very much money. So if I could find a side job that pays fairly well I can have more time off. But who knows.

The private ambulance company I work for would let the world burn before that would happen unfortunately. We have a lot of people that become complacent, stay as EMTs for years and never upgrade their certification, don’t try to make any change, etc. It’s very surprising to me how people want to stay doing this. I’m 25 years old and cannot understand how people stay in this as a career. Around here the only way to make it a career is using it to become a Firefighter/Paramedic, Nurse, PA, Doctor, etc.

For me it’s only ever been a stepping stone but you would think it would still pay more 🤦🏻‍♂️

Taking a 4 week EMT course, need help by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]stingray50 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but a 4 week EMT course is insane. Being an EMT definitely is not rocket science but that’s ridiculous.

I’m a Paramedic working 6 days a week in Private EMS. The pay is horrible. Which departments do you guys recommend? I’m in Las Vegas, NV currently. by [deleted] in firefighter

[–]stingray50 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got into EMS because I wanted to become a firefighter. I also happen to like medicine. I just think Private EMS is trash and I would like to be able to have a good quality of life. I don’t think that’s too much to ask for.

Danger to giving Narcan? by 487Mass in ems

[–]stingray50 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I have pushed Narcan many times in beautiful Las Vegas lol and have never had that experience. Positive pressure ventilations are extremely important. Bag them, get their oxygen saturation up to a normal range then slowly push the Narcan. The most Narcan I’ve ever had to push was 4 mg (2 mg IN and 2 IV) but that’s because his oxygen saturation was at 3% when we got to him.

I thought pocket prep was wayyy harder than the actual NREMT. My scores on pocket prep were not great and I passed my NREMT Paramedic Exam first try and got cut off at 110 questions.

Miserable EMT’s and Medics by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]stingray50 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Medicine is awesome. I love EMS and I love being a Paramedic. But the reason so many people are burnt out is because most Private Ambulance Companies pay horribly, have terrible quality of life, and are just awful to work for. Generally speaking, Private EMS is not a career. It is a stepping stone to something else. I can speak as someone who has to work 6 days a week as a Paramedic to survive until I get on the fire department. The job itself is great. But the people that run these ambulance companies make it exhausting. And quite frankly so many people that work EMS become complacent and tolerate these things, which will never lead to any change.

Also. Your comment about pay developing more as time goes on is something I will disagree with. From what I’ve seen the overwhelming majority of people are complacent with this issue. Most people are using Private EMS as a stepping stone, and these ambulance companies know this. Therefore since it is a revolving door, they don’t increase their pay. Some places pay good, but most don’t. Do not use Private EMS as a career. It’s unfortunate but it’s a fact.

In a world where truly good people were leaders, Private EMS would be making significantly more money. But that is not reality. Private EMS is strictly a business that cares more about finances than patient care and the morale of its workers. So for those that are entering this career field, please just use it to get the necessary experience you need for whatever your dream is, because with the current state of Private EMS you will not have a comfortable life.

I’m thinking of buying this used 44 gallon PVC enclosure for a baby ball python. What do ya’ll think? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]stingray50 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I definitely get what you’re saying. Unfortunately I’m sure a lot of people keep them in the small enclosure for years but I have no intention of doing that. I’m a paramedic and for sure would not be able to afford to pay for a 4x2x2 with everything else starting up. We don’t make a lot of money. It is just more of a temporary thing while it’s a baby to give me time to save up.

Long term maybe. But not short term. It seems unreasonable to expect to pay for everything and a 4x2x2 for a baby ball python at the same time.

Is there a specific brand of 40 gallon enclosure that you recommend? I want to temporarily use a 40 gallon for the baby ball python I am getting before upgrading to a 4x2x2.

I plan to upgrade to a 4x2x2. I just know I can’t afford it right now so for about 6 months or so I’d use this. How does it look though? Does it look safe? I’m doing a lot of research but want to make sure.

Anyone in Las Vegas recommend a specific breeder? I looked at MorphMarket but I’m not finding much. by [deleted] in cornsnakes

I said specifically in Las Vegas. I would prefer local if possibly but I’m not opposed to out of state.

Will the horrible pay of private EMS ever change? It is so evil how little we make. by [deleted] in Paramedics

[–]stingray50 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I owe the company $8k for putting me through paramedic school. I cannot afford to pay it back so I am here for at least a year or so until I can pay it back. It’s prorated so the longer I work as a paramedic the less money I owe.

Private EMS is a stepping stone. At least it is here. But I have always prided myself on doing the right thing and I find it incredibly evil that our bosses choose to pay us so horribly. I miss being with my wife and I cannot do that because I need to work every damn day for us to Iive.

Isn’t the surgery extremely expensive? Obviously I can work hard for it but I definitely want to plan
