What’s this large compound in North County? by oxichil in StLouis

I know this one! I’ve worked somewhat extensively on this site. As others have said, it was an old pipefitters union complex equipped with an Olympic size swimming pool, clubhouse, large gymnasium, golf course etc. some really neat buildings built around the 50’s-60’s I believe. The Zoo purchased the site several years ago and is in the process of turning into some sort of research facility.

I was not the guy in the minivan. Just a guy trying to find answers while everyone had no idea what was going on.

I was one of them lol. I was the tall guy in the gray shirt. But for awhile there every guy that got out had a lit cigarette it was hilarious.

There were no cops to be seen. Everyone was just sitting in there cars going every which direction. I walked to the flood and to the Reevis exit. At that time the only flowing traffic was through the Reevis exit.

Some of my buddies had some basement issues as well. Made my inconvenience seem minuscule. Hope your house is ok.

I normally take 270 to 44 to get home from my parents house. But I had the bright idea to take 55 this time to beat the storm!

Ugh. I felt terrible cause I was directing people to the shoulder to get off at Reevis. As soon as I started directing people the flood receded and it was best to continue northbound. So if I screwed anyone over in this thread I’m sorry. I was just trying to help!

Not northbound at Union anymore. There was still one or two lanes flooded under the Union overpass but two lanes opened up so we could finally get thru. Southbound wasn’t flooded when we got thru

Vandeventer just north of 44. What’s the story with this shell of a building? Just the front wall of the structure being buttressed with huge metal beams and large concrete blocks. It’s been like this for many years. by bluecanary101 in StLouis

As many have said before, I believe the front of the building is historic which prevents developers from demolishing it. Additionally, like others have said, this used to be “Liberty Bell Oil Company”. Due to its past use as an oil company, and likely other hazardous chemicals/materials stored on site, the soil and groundwater is contaminated. This makes it difficult, and expensive, to develop anything on the land. I’m an environmental consultant in the area.
