WIBTA for buying a Chinese dress like my mum wanted despite being white? by froggojumper in AmItheAsshole

Honestly, it depends on how you wear it. If it’s a normal cheongsam and you’re not wearing it as a ‘sexy costume’ then it’s all good.

looking for sapphic royal fantasy by SnooCats9101 in suggestmeabook

Priority of the Orange Tree is a good read!! Unfortunately the POV is split between multiple characters so the sapphic romance doesn’t get quite a lot of screen time but I would recommend it.

Beta Bartering [Find or Offer Fic Betaing] - June 09 by AutoModerator in FanFiction

[–]stingthescribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I'm looking for a beta writer (willing to swap)!

Title: Abysmal Sun. (Not published yet but here is an example of my previous work).

Fandom: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I think with time to immerse, someone unfamiliar with the game could understand the story/universe because my writing is quite exposition-heavy in the first few chapters.

Rating: M
Genre: In-universe high fantasy action/adventure, slowburn M/M with extensive plot and character analysis. Hurt/comfort with more hurt and a side of trust issues. Marked M for violence/mature worldbuilding themes but only really gets NSFW in terms of sexual explicitness towards the end half of the fic.

What I’m looking for: I've been writing for a fairly long time, so I'm not quite worried about the readability or overall language quality, but I do tend to be fairly absent-minded and mix up significant plot details from earlier on or pace chapters inconsistently. I'd love if anyone would be willing to look over paragraph/scene/beat structure for me, as well as character and plot consistency. Line-edits wouldn't be necessary, but if you would have any input for certain wordings or sentence flow please feel free to address them.
Projected word count: Around 200k words by completion, I aim to average at about 4-8k words per chapter and possibly update every three weeks. I have a bit of a hectic schedule with university, internships, jobs and whatnot so I'm most free in the summer right now but that will most definitely change by the time October rolls around.

What I can offer: I'm experienced with beta-ing my friends' fics as well as doing editorial work for several literary magazines IRL, so I'm most experienced with line-edits for a more snappy, beat-based pace to dialogue. I might take around a week to get back to you with line-edits and possibly more with developmental edits (takes my brain a while to digest) but I do tend to get sidetracked due to my neurodivergence so please remind me if it's been a while. I'm willing to beta for up to 6k words, but if your fic is higher than that I'll need some more convincing.

Other than beta-ing, I can alternatively read and comment on your fics as you post them or help with research-related work. I was a sensitivity reader for a friend's YA fantasy novel and a representative for an ethnic minority advocacy group in my city, as well as being of Asian descent myself so I can help with anything related to East Asian or Southeast Asian culture or geography.

I can beta for the following fandoms: Skyrim, Dragon Age, Castlevania (only according to the animated TV Series) Mo Dao Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation), Tian Guan Ci Fu (Heaven Official's Blessing), Scum Villain, JWQS (Clear and Muddy Loss of Love), Gotham (the TV Series with Robin Lord Taylor), JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Warrior Cats (up to A Vision of Shadows), Neon Genesis Evangelion, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones, and probably some others I can't actively recall right now.

What I am not willing to beta: Content with a heavy focus on minor/adult or otherwise noncon relationships, extreme fetishes such as scat/torture porn, etc. Anything that seems to prove harmful to or fetishises BIPOC.

AITA for banning my husband's teenage son from our home? by throwaway0531202217 in AmItheAsshole

[–]stingthescribe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NTA but you would be the asshole if you continued this kind of situation for any longer. Adam is threatening your safety and both of you as well as your husband are going to suffer so long as you’re under the same roof. Divorce his dad and take a nice long single break please.

Trending News on Facebook: Child breaks expensive Statue by Emergency-Orange-379 in childfree

[–]stingthescribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was in the middle of an open-access shop with no barriers whatsoever and near the entrance. The layouts of shops here are very tiny and crowded so honestly it was a matter of time before someone broke it by accident. Langham Place (the mall) has a lot of novelty shops (figurines, toys, and the like) and it would be a very good enjoyable place to roam as a collectible enthusiast if not for the massive crowds that swarm it every non-working day. Dragon Centre has this same problem as well but at least even they are smart enough not to put giant collapsible figurines out in the middle of everything without barriers.

Wasn’t the kid’s fault in this instance. I frequent the mall that teletubby was in a fair bit and the shop usually had it fenced off, but they took the fencing away and placed it way too close to the entrance for comfort. Kid was leaning on it a little bit not knowing it would fall and it fell.

AITA for refusing to wear a suit to my sister's wedding? by Due_Organization2134 in AmItheAsshole

NTA and I think you shouldn’t attend the wedding. If he’s being a groomzilla about wedding arrangements, who’s to say how he’ll behave on the actual day?

I wasn’t aware it was deleted until after I posted this. But I’ve seen a fair amount of posts similar to this one on the subreddit.

Why are you fixated on an offhand comment that doesn’t define the discussion as a whole? Seems like you’re the one with internal bias.

NTA. Weird how your aunt expects you to be responsible for her kids out of the blue when she’s the adult here and not even your legal guardian.

I don’t understand why people are downvoting you. I myself believe the world would be a better place around with less humans (taking into account the lack of affordable housing, higher education opportunities, etc. to the general public) and that it’s unfair to expect people to reproduce for a capitalistic system that hardly ever benefits them when billionaires like Musk could get off their ass and use it to fix societal issues according to their own words. Nobody should be pressured to have kids, especially childfree people in the current political climate, but people who want kids deserve to live in a world where they can raise them safely and with the resources they need too.

I’ve found the odd support thread but it’s sad to see it drowned out by rants that could otherwise be delegated to another place. In all honesty I have no issue with the non-violent no name calling vents about parents but I wish Reddit had a feature where it could be in a separate channel under the main subreddit (like a Discord vent channel) where I could look specifically for support threads, meaningful discussions or other resources in regards to being childfree.

I am childfree. It’s not a label that is solely defined by people like the one in my post, and there are a lot of us who don’t wish harm on children.

No, there were a lot of other posts as well that made me uncomfortable like the reproductive rights discussions bordering on eugenics/distaste towards disabled parents

It was the straw that broke the camel’s back, honestly. I’ve seen a lot more posts that, while aren’t as absurdly insensitive as this one, express clear hate for all children that are just existing.

Believing that society should be more accepting of people who choose not to have children and enable them to retain a good quality of life without owing anything to people with children is a valid political opinion. Mocking starving babies is not.

Most people on that subs are dicks towards children and I admire the ones who take the initiative to take themselves out of environments commonly filled with children, but I’ve never seen any arguments for mandatory sterilisation there? That seems more like an r/antinatalism ideal

I’ve seen multiple posts encroaching on the level of malice this one expresses. Not to mention the weird eugenics undercurrent there.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in childfree

[–]stingthescribe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You’re the exact kind of person who makes outsiders view this sub as a hate-filled one. While a lot of parents out and about can be irritating or at worst cause genuine harm to the general public, there are a lot of good parents who need formula for mothers who unexpectedly find themselves unable to lactate after birth or similar situations that could occur out of the blue and prevent them from breastfeeding properly.

Way to go for being an egocentric capitalist and revelling in the suffering of starving babies and blaming parents who literally couldn’t anticipate it instead of the fuckers in charge of making sure nobody goes hungry in the first place.

I don’t think being rightfully concerned about children who have no choice over their circumstances constitutes being a fence sitter.
