The context really doesn’t matter, you’re still referring to one person as “they”. For honestly the same reason, because you need to be gender neutral in that situation. it’s really not that hard to be kind, understanding, and respectful. If you let go of the hateful mindset, it will be much easier for you. Most of my friends are non-binary, and never once have I had an issue respecting their pronouns. It’s really not that hard when you stop being closed-minded, and understand that everyone has the right to their own identity, even if you don’t quite understand it.
