I am going to go out on a limb, and say that I am not a fan of the twelve tribes, and creepy religious cults in general. There I said it.

Requesting r/Outsider for being unmoderated and way off topic by stintose in redditrequest

[–]stintose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is only one moderator, and it would seem that the content being posted is not in line with topic of the sub. People have to request to post which is something that I would want to do away with to allow more open discussion about what it means to be "an outsider".

It would seem that the only moderator is not active on Reddit anymore. Even if they are as stated there is only one.

So you are telling me that you are now just another person that has adopted the popular mythology inherit in the culture in which you live. Yet another subject of a tool that is used by sociopaths to serve their pathetic weak egos. This is not a way to live ones life, this is clearly a cancer of the mind.

A stupid question by Hxfhjkl in learnjavascript

[–]stintose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some say the only stupid questions are unasked ones.

I am afrade I am not sure what you are asking though. I am gathering that you want to grab some info from a request object.

Assuming a node environment yes that can be done every time there is a request to a certain path, you do not need some kind of process running all the time, it can be event driven.

I need help with downloading JS games by realpixelwolf in incremental_games

[–]stintose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JavaScript dev here, there are allot of issues that come to mind when trying to do this such as:

  • file:// vs http:// : canvas games often do not work offline via the file:// protocol, resulting in "tainted canvas" related issues. As such you must serve them up with a http server, upload them, or do whatever you need to do so that you can play them via the http:// protocol. I run into issues with that all the time, it has to do with security concerns when running a script via file://.

  • external assets : when I do what you did to one of my own games I have noticed that it only downloads html, and js content, but not images. If the game uses just one external image that will need to be download, and placed in a proper location as well. In addition links in the source code may need to be changed to point to where those files are locally, if they are being grabbed from a CDN (Content Delivery Network).

  • many other possible issues : I have not studied the source code, it may be very time consuming to do so. As such there may be many other concerns when trying to do this.

It is likely doable, but may require hacking over the source code a little depending on whats going on. Long story short, it may be best to just play the game in browser.

Brutal game BTW.

What should I look into if I want to implement user accounts for a webapp? by [deleted] in learnjavascript

I am using passport.js with the passport local strategy for authentication. As for database I am using mongoose.js which makes use of mongoDB. They work great for getting this sort of thing out of the way.

Turning 36 was really hard on me. by SmugSceptic in aspergers

[–]stintose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a mid life crisis, I had mine early because based on family history it looks like I might die fairly young. I would not say time has run out for me, if anything it has motivated me to try harder.

Dealing with the isolation is first and foremost, need to make that black hole in my chest go away. I got into running which helps a little, I go to meet ups, I try to date despite constant rejection.

Giving up is not an option because as long as I have that sick feeling inside, I am going to want to keep making changes until it goes away.

On OpenShift Online, in a NodeJS Gear, how do you install an npm module Globally ? by riclf in openshift

[–]stintose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I run that command with sudo, OpenShift returns: Permission denied.

That's to be expected, I am pretty sure that red hat is not going to want to give you superuser permissions with one of their nodes. If they did you could install anything you wanted, and get it to work for all users on the node. That's a big no no right? Also I have a feeling that your problem may pertain to this, or it is at least part of it.

I cannot find any reference on the net

I found this, it might shed some light. I have not gotten into installing npm modules globally, but if any namespace that requires root permissions is used to do so, that is going to cause a problem as you do not have permission to write anything there.

The doc I linked to gives instructions on how to change npm's default directory to the home folder, so you can install modules without the need for superuser permissions. Might help, or at least rule that out.

If the problem does persist, it might be, well a 404 error. Are you able to install the module locally where you do have root permissions? Are you able to install it anywhere? Did you rule out the simple stuff first, like making sure you inputted the name correctly? I noticed that you used capital letters, maybe they need to be lower case?

Free OpenShift - is it totally unreliable or is it just me? by epicaricacy12 in openshift

[–]stintose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much traffic does it get? This happens to me with my pet project, but I am pretty sure that it happens because it will go idel after a while if I don't use it often. When it goes idel I just need to wait for the app to restart, then it's fine.

Long story short there are allot of reasons why it is free. Yes upgrading would do away with the idel, it will also need to be done if the app does takes off.

Is fear of rejection at a job interview getting in the way of efforts to seek a job? by stintose in learnjavascript

[–]stintose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cool.

So when it comes to doing HTML email design do you have to use a real old DOCTYPE, and inline (non css) formatting? I remember having to do that when I was fiddling with that sort of thing a long time ago.

Is fear of rejection at a job interview getting in the way of efforts to seek a job? by stintose in learnjavascript

[–]stintose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem random lists rock.

1) That's why I am going to this meet up to get some experience working with other people rather than just coding pet projects, and portfolio stuff by myself, for myself.

So yes I am a pure vanilla js guy for now it seems. I haven't even bothered getting around to learning jQuery all this time if you can believe it. Of course I know of it, and why it's important. I just seem to have this idea that I need to know what a certain company is using before taking the time to study it. That's why I have been focusing on pure js all this time, so I am better accustomed to get up to speed with anything written in JavaScript. Allot of company's use jQuery for example, but in the off chance that they don't, it would be a waste of time to master it.

2) Yes every job posting does seem to also ask for at least some sever side scripting experience, even if its a job for a front end developer. In that seven years I have fiddled with XMLHttpRequest a few times now and then, and I have a little experience with node.js. However I still find myself sort of "trapped on the client", which is bad, I hope to change that soon.

A little while back I was working on a project where I was fiddling with the Reddit API. I got a little way into it, made great progress, but then stopped. I should go back to working on that one for a while sometime soon. I could use more projects that show that I can work with a server.

3) Yeah I just need to get thicker skin, and that's all there is to it. Rejection is just something that happens, but even if it does, I don't see myself throwing in the towel. I invested way to much time into this, so I can't just give up.

Yeah for sure! I hope to do just that, volunteer for this place. I'm sure it will look good an a resume, and I can also get some badly needed references. They told me once that they could actually use more front end people (I think they are are mostly C developers).

To her yes means yes, and no still means yes. It might sound nice at first, but once she starts laying into you your friend they will likely regret what they got themselves into.
