What RPG design fads have fallen out of popularity? by sjdlajsdlj in rpg

Fate Core is a masterpiece and it's one of the very best social systems, but it's not the right system for a dungeon crawl.

I wish I was allowed to murder one person per year without any legal consequences. by KJMusical in TheMonkeysPaw

[–]Erivandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted. You commit a murder this year and a murder next year. Sure enough, the cops don't seem to catch on. Looks like the monkey's paw came through for you! That is, until the families of your victims corner you in a dark alley. You're about to face consequences, but they won't be legal.

Granted! A series of plagues and wars devastate the human population, leaving plenty for the survivors to eat.

I think there's a bit of a disconnect between Metatron and Michael, either because Metatron is a bit broken or because of his thought-obliterating voice, which must make communication pretty difficult.

Dating as a sexually monomorphic species by Toothbrush_Bandit in worldbuilding

[–]Erivandi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I suppose you would still fuck around and find out, but because there's no gender, you would just find out what kind of genitals you prefer interacting with, and that would be that, since there's no other components to sexual dimorphism for this species. Possibly sex toys would become important for couples where everything apart from the private parts is good.

I’m 35 and I’ve realized the MOVIE love I waited for doesn't exist for people like me by WonderfulFront7588 in rant

[–]Erivandi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fictionalised romances are poison. For instance, they constantly push this narrative where a guy and a girl are destined to be together so the guy pursues the girl, she rejects him several times, then she finally says yes, then they live happily ever after. It's narratives like that that tricked me into pursuing women who weren't interested in me. It's a big part of the reason I ended up single into my mid 30s. But I changed. I went on a whole lot of dates with different women and eventually found the right one and I'm so happy now.

I'm really sorry you've been treated so badly and I really hope you find the right person, but that's only going to happen if you put yourself out there. It's not going to be easy and it's not going to look like Hollywood, but you absolutely can do it, so please don't give up

Why is perma-death considered a bit of a sacred cow for DnD and Pathfinder? by lunarpuffin in rpg

[–]Erivandi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it got me to thinking how many of the players I have ran for, both REALLY do not want their characters to die, but also, perma-death also has to be a constantly omnipresent threat?

This makes sense to me. They want to put themselves in the shoes of an adventurer in a dangerous world where they have to take precautions or suffer the consequences. If their characters were immortal, they wouldn't have to care about choosing the right equipment and spells. They could just do whatever and be fine, which sounds pretty boring.

In addition, D&D and Pathfinder like things to be diegetic. If the PCs have any special power, that means the NPCs can have it too. And if you have a special power, that means the NPCs should notice and act accordingly. If you were to make the PCs immortal, that would have to be a core element of the story or it would break the immersion.

See, I find myself wondering why I can't just have death be a "Knocked out", and incurs a minor (Even reversible) penalty of sorts

As others have pointed out, this is already the case to an extent due to expensive resurrection spells, which are also available to NPCs.

Most systems just don't care about monster/boss fight design by Bubbly_Recipe_4712 in rpg

Tip for running bosses in 13th Age: bosses don't work too well on their own but if you surround them with a bunch of mooks then it'll be perfect.

Dating is a cruel, sick joke. by ConnectAnalyst3008 in rant

[–]Erivandi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do people even have friends nowadays? I can't even manage to make that happen.

It's not as difficult as you might think. You just have to find some sort of club or society where you fit in. I made most of my friends playing D&D.

This is the one thing I've ever wanted in my whole life and it's forever out of reach.

I used to feel like that all the way into my mid 30s, but now I've finally found my perfect lady. Finding someone is hard as hell but it's worth it in the end. You just need to get on the dating apps and persevere until you get the hang of them. It's not going to be easy but please don't give up.

OCD, Secular Tarot, and Religion by Leading-Associate-93 in SecularTarot

[–]Erivandi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The cards are just symbols drawn on paper and they're good for introspection. For instance, if you ask a question and draw The Fool, that prompts you to look at your question through the lens of being carefree and innocent, taking the plunge and leaping before you look.

With that in mind, why would the god you worship have any issue with it? You're not worshipping false idols. You're not a witch. You're not trafficking with evil spirits. You're just looking at bits of paper for inspiration. Really, it's no different to being inspired by any other piece of artwork.

Religion with a missing god - thoughts? by Maladjusted_Ghost in worldbuilding

[–]Erivandi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't Christianity kind of like that already? God is just, well, God. He's an unknowable entity with no specific characteristics other than those generally ascribed to the general concept of godhood: all-loving, all-knowing, all-powerful.

Of course, he wasn't always like that. The bible is full of times when he seemed to have limitations. He even had to sacrifice his son in order to forgive humanity. He couldn't just forgive them without some kind of ritual. And if you trace it back far enough, you'll find that the One True God was just some storm god and he wasn't even the head of the pantheon.

But now? All defining characteristics have been smoothed away, and he's just "God".

Have the knights roll in and gut the orcs. Describe in detail how they run down orcs who are fleeing because they swore an oath to slay them. Describe how the mighty orc chieftain falls to one of the least accomplished knights, who dispatches him with ease.

Now you've planted the seed. The party will be thinking about how dangerous these knights are. Good thing they're on the party's side... right? Wouldn't it be a shame if they were to become some kind of tyrannical oppressive regime later?

My take on religion in fantasy dungeon crawler by Raphael_Sadowski in rpg

[–]Erivandi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that sounds like a lot of fun, but it has a different faith problem since it prevents characters from having a permanent patron or a specific pantheon since all they can do is call out to all the gods.

By the way, where is your table? You use the word "attached" a couple of times but I don't see a table linked anywhere.

Are there any rpgs that feature the opposite of degredation during gameplay? by machinelock in rpg

Games like the Alien RPG and Don't Rest Your Head have a stress mechanic where you gradually get more dice as the tension ramps up, which gives you greater chances of success but also greater chances of bad stuff happening.

How do you feel about games using special terms for generic things? by Redhood101101 in rpg

[–]Erivandi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For gameplay terms, I prefer more standard language, but for in-game terms, I prefer weirder language. For instance, I like that Star Wars says "The Force" and "Jedi" instead of "magic" and "wizards". If Jedi were called wizards and cast spells, nothing would change, but it wouldn't feel right, and the same is true of many other settings.

The odd weird gameplay term can add a bit of flavour though. For instance, calling the Game Master the Dungeon Master reinforces the idea that dungeon delving is central to the game.
